What's the Deal with Kim Kardashian's Weight Loss Lollipops?

The Kardashian clan are a marketers dream because they have so much reach thanks to their presence on social media. For brands, it makes sense to partner with any member of this famous family because they have millions of followers, but sometimes they receive backlash for the products that they choose to promote, for example, Kim Kardashian West’s weight loss lollipops.

Kardashian West took to Instagram in May to share a photo of Tummy and Co.'s "appetite suppressant" lollipops. She captioned the image with, “You guys… @flattummyco just dropped a new product. They’re Appetite Suppressant Lollipops and they’re literally unreal…” and she then went on to give followers a promotional code. The lollipops are 35 calories each and come in four different flavors; grape, watermelon, yellow apple, and berry, and are meant to be eaten when you feel a pang of hunger in the mid-morning or late afternoon. But the reality star’s post instantly received harsh criticism (and she later decided to delete it too) with one of her biggest critics being actress and television presenter, Jameela Jamil.

Jamil tweeted about Kardashian West’s post and referred to her a “terrible and toxic influence on young girls.”

Prevention notes that it’s not a smart idea to use these lollipops as a weight loss tool. According to the publication, these lollipops contain Satiereal, a patented saffron extract, which according to Karen Ansel, MS, RDN, “may” suppress the appetite. She told them: “I say may because there hasn’t been a lot of research on Satiereal and the results of the research that does exist are mixed.” And Women’s Health notes that the safety of this product is uncertain because they are technically a supplement, and therefore haven't been reviewed by the FDA.

There’s that, and then the fact that these lollipops are basically sugar, with the first two ingredients being cane sugar and brown rice syrup. So, the takeaway? According to health professionals and publications, don't listen to Kim Kardashian about this.
