What Not to Wear to the Gym

Make sure you avoid this fitness fashion faux pas!

"You are what you wear." This may sound like a shallow expression but think about it. If you never share a word with others, the only way they can get to know you is by examining your presentation. That means they'll look at the clothes you wear to see what kind of person you are.

If you're going to the gym, it's wise to dress for the occasion. That doesn't mean you have to buy the latest and priciest fitness apparel, but it does mean avoiding the clothes that give off a bad impression:

  • Bikinis –Yes, it may feel freeing to work out in nothing but a bikini (top, bottom, or both), but the gym isn't the place for it (take it to the beach). All it will do is attract unwanted attention.
  • Short Shorts – For men and women alike, this is a no-no. For guys, shorts that are too short will leave certain unmentionables flapping in the breeze. For women, booty shorts can send the wrong signals. Guys, stick with board shorts or basketball shorts. Women, if your under-butt is showing, the shorts are too short.
  • Leggings – Before you get up in arms, let us explain. For men, leggings are too tight and show things that no one in the gym wants to see, even if you're wearing tight underwear. For women, many leggings are fine but remember that some leggings become very sheer when stretched. Every time you squat, deadlift, or bend over to pick up a weight it can turn your leggings more see-through than you'd originally bargained for.
  • Barely-There Shirts and Vests – This isn't bad gym etiquette per se, but it's definitely not a good look. Any vest or tank top that is more holes than material is better left for comfortable at-home wear. Cover your upper half with a regular workout shirt, or at least a tank top with normal-sized arm and neck holes.
  • Ratty Clothing – This just sends the message that you are a scruffy person. Yes, you're going to sweat a lot into your gym clothes, but that doesn't mean you should use all your old T-shirts and cast-off shorts. Invest in decent sets of gym clothing, including nice athletic shirts, shorts, pants, and sweaters.
  • Denim – Never wear denim to the gym! The humidity in the gym will make the jeans cling to your body, and sweat will make things absolutely uncomfortable. Your clothing should either be light cotton or a synthetic material designed to absorb and wick away moisture.
  • Sandals or Boots – Boots are too thick and heavy for a proper workout, and sandals are too slim and unsupportive. You should go the gym in shoes intended for a workout: gym shoes, running shoes, cross trainers, heck even basketball shoes will do. Never sandals or heavy boots!
