Shailene Woodley and 4 Other Celebs Who Have Gone on Crazy Diets for a Film

Some celebrities take their art very seriously, and they will do anything to create a more authentic performance, even if that means going on a crazy diet for a film. Like Shailene Woodley, who ate just 350 calories a day for her role in the 2018 film, Adrift which sounds like torture!

This diet left her miserable and unable to sleep without a glass of wine because she was so hungry. According to The Independent, Woodley revealed that she had just a can of salmon, some steamed broccoli, and two egg yolks every day for two weeks!

Another celeb whose role was memorable for its weight loss was Chris Hemsworth’s role in Ron Howard's In The Heart Of The Sea. In preparation for the role, he was only able to eat 500 to 600 calories a day to make him look scrawny. It was a diet that Hemsworth revealed on Instagram was not one he recommended.

Christian Bale dropped to just four stone for his role in the 2004 film, The Machinist. And according to The Mirror, while this was Bale’s total weight after his diet, 50 Cent’s appearance also changed dramatically when he lost four stone for a role in Things Fall Apart, in which he played a football player suffering from cancer.

When Lily James starred as Cinderella, she had to wear a corset and in order to fit into it properly, she went on a liquid diet. According to Fox News, James told E! News that her decision wasn’t so much to lose weight, but to be comfortable on set because she wasn’t able to untie the corset, and “If you ate [solid] food, it didn't really digest properly, and I'd be burping all afternoon in [costar Richard Madden]'s face, and it just really sorted of unpleasant.” Sounds gross.

Another A-lister whose appearance drastically changed for a role was Matthew McConaughey when he gave a memorable (and Oscar-winning) performance in Dallas Buyers Club. For the role, McConaughey, who is usually known for his impressive abs, lost 3 and a half pounds a week, eventually losing 21 kgs for the role, BBC reports.
