Everything You Need to Know about the Hummus Milkshake

"Hummus" and "milkshake" are two words you don’t expect to see in the same sentence, let alone used to describe a drink. But hummus milkshakes are a thing!

Perhaps the main ingredient is obvious, but yes, this drink contains hummus (you know, the ground-up chickpea paste), but this beverage is also made using tahini, almond milk, bananas, and dates. It is the brainchild of New York restaurant, The Hummus & Pita Co., who released their creation for National Hummus Day in 2018 (yes, that’s actually a thing and is on May 13), and the product has been creating quite a buzz in recent months.

According to Fine Dining Lovers, the shakes are available in five different flavors, all of which actually sound delicious; plain, chocolate, pecan butter, strawberry and pistachio (and over the festive season, I spotted on their Instagram page that they had an eggnog flavor, too).

Perhaps, knowing a little more about Hummus & Pita Co., we shouldn’t be completely surprised that they have created a sweet drink using hummus, because in the past they have created desserts, including chocolate hummus with brownies. But could this be their most Instagram-worthy creation, yet?!

Not only is social media now filled with images of these shakes, but the shake is also being celebrated for its health benefits, which according to New York nutritionist Lisa R. Young are many. "Chickpeas are great," she told New York Daily News. "They pack protein, fiber, iron. They're very healthy." It should also be noted that these beverages are vegan, and made without gluten or added sugar, plus there is plenty of protein and fiber, Brit.co reports -- if you want to make it at home, the publication also got their hands on the recipe.

That said, not everyone is onboard with the sound of a hummus drink, and according to New York Daily News, Hummus & Pita Co. Chief Operating Officer Matt Shepard told them that when people hear of the hummus milkshake, they get a “scowl” on their faces. But, maybe that's about to change?
