Don't Fast Forward Through Those Commercials! How to Watch TV and Get Fit

You don't need any equipment, just some space and your own body weight.

Sometimes it feels like you just can't fit everything into your day. Work, family, friends, meals and then you try to add in workouts and just catching up on your favorite shows to relax. Exhausting! How about instead of trying to decide to whether to catch up on the "Big Bang Theory" or work your core you do both?

You can get as creative as you want with these mini workouts. Want some extra cardio? Do it! Want to work those legs? Squat away! Here is a sample of what you can do combining both resistance exercise and cardio intervals for mini HIIT sessions during those commercial breaks. Take the time to warm up a bit with a few laps up and down your stairs or some dynamic stretches to get the blood flowing.

Commercial Break 1: Alternate 10-15 bodyweight squats with 20 jumping jacks

Commercial Break 2: Alternate 10-15 push-ups with 30 high knees

Commercial Break 3: Alternate a 20-second plank with 20 mountain climbers

Commercial Break 4: Alternate 10-15 plie or toes out squats with 10 burpees

Commercial Break 5: Alternate 10-15 chair dips with 20 butt kicks

For the last few minutes of your show, stretch out those muscles. Hold each stretch for about 15-30 seconds and relax.

You can also do these in a Tabata type format, although commercial breaks vary and might not be four minutes long. A sample workout might look like this.

Break 1: 20 seconds of jumping jacks with 10 seconds of rest

Break 2: 20 seconds of stair sprints with 10 seconds of rest

Break 3: 20 seconds of burpees with 10 seconds of rest

Break 4: 20 seconds of jump rope with 10 seconds of rest

Break 5: 20 seconds of mountain climbers with 10 seconds of rest.

Get creative and change it up! If you have some equipment feel free to use it. You can really do anything you want, and feel good no matter what show is your guilty pleasure.
