5 Tips for Taking Your CrossFit Workout Home With You

Most people think that CrossFit can only be done in your local “box” (the fancy CrossFit name for a gym), but the truth is that you can take your CrossFit workout anywhere you go. Whether you’re at home, on the road, or visiting a totally different continent, you can do CrossFit wherever you are. Here are a few tips to help you do your workout anytime, anyplace.

Stock Your Home Gym

Who says a CrossFit box is the only place where you can find the right equipment? A few pieces of equipment is all you need to do 95 percent of the CrossFit workouts without ever leaving your home.

You will need ...

  • A rowing machine
  • A pull-up bar
  • A sturdy elevated surface (for box jumps)
  • A weighted medicine ball (for wall ball throws)
  • A selection of kettlebells
  • A barbell with weight discs

Most of these items are found in home gyms anyway, so you don’t have to load up on fancy equipment. Just these few essentials are more than enough to do a complete CrossFit workout at home!

Focus on the Bodyweight Moves

If you don’t have the weights, the rowing machine, or the medicine ball, don’t sweat it! CrossFit involves a lot of bodyweight movements, such as box jumps, burpees, pull-ups, push-ups, V-ups, and so many more. You can still get in a killer CrossFit workout just by using these bodyweight movements. Even if you have to hit the gym or box for your deadlifts, snatch and cleans, and other heavy-weight exercises, you can do all the bodyweight moves at home.

Do a Running Workout

A lot of CrossFit workouts involve a good deal of running or running mixed in with weights and bodyweight moves. For your at-home CrossFit sessions, focus on the running workouts. You can run on the street, in the forest, around the park, or even up into the mountains. All you need to get in a CrossFit running workout is the right pair of shoes!

Get a HIIT timer

The Tabata workouts involve a specific HIIT timer (30 seconds work, 10 seconds rest), and you’ll find that most CrossFit workouts do require a timer of some sort. All you’ll need is one of the many HIIT/Tabata apps available for Android or iOS smartphones and tablets, and you’re ready to work out!

Plan Your Workouts

Whether you’re planning a circuit routine, an EMOM, AMRAP, or multi-round workout, you’re going to need to know what you’re doing before you start. You can find a lot of CrossFit workouts online that you can print out, or you can use them to customize your own at-home, weight-and-equipment-free routines. A few minutes spent planning your workout in advance can go a long way toward helping you push yourself to your limits in your training session.

CrossFit doesn’t require a fancy gym with the latest equipment. All you need is a few simple additions to your home gym, the right app, and organizational skills. You can do that CrossFit workout anywhere you are, anytime you want!
