3 Weeks on Atkins
I started on Atkins on April 27th after weighing 220 at the doctors office and being told that I'm obese. She suggested a no white diet. So I'm doing this. The only things that I eat that are "off limits" on Atkins are apples, carrots and some popcorn. This is week 3 and I've lost 12lbs with no additional exercise. I plan to start incorporating some exercising in this week. I've learned to like grilled flounder and vegetables. It's not as hard as I thought it would be.
The first week, I felt weak and tired but I'm past that and am feeling pretty good. My goal is 165 and I hope to hit that by October. The Atkins works but it's not something for short term, be careful or you will gain the weight back. |
I'm with Freedom - I've been "sloppy".
The posts here are encouraging though so I started logging into the food journal again. |
ive been on Atkins about four different times. Ive always done well on it. One year, I had lost 60 pounds on it.
However, my issue with Atkins is that whenever I eat anything that is bready, I act like a drug addict addicted to bread or something. Whenever I count calories, I don't struggle with this issue. Ive seen a lot of success on and a lot of failures. It all depends on your resolve. i wish you all well! |
hi. im visiting the atkins diet for the second time. before i lost around two stone, looked great, but got back into my old habits. i want to lose the fat again and keep it off by eating healthy and regular exercise, but i need a quick fix because i feel so miserable as i am. I weigh 11st 10 and im 5ft 6in, so not massive but 9st/9st 6 is my ideal weight. I have lost three pounds in three days and feel better about myself already. My special treat is squirty cream, the cream you get in the aerosol can, its low in carbs, about 8 carbs a large bowl. this is my sweet treat, i even have it for breakfast sometimes, ha ha. you feel really naughty eating it but its ok because of the low carb contents.

Does anyone have a strategy that works for them? Just saying NO isn't working very well. So when I walk past freshly baked baguette or sweet rolls at the grocery, they call out my name, but now it is more of a "whisper" than a "shout out". |

How long have you been on Atkins and what rung are you on. If you follow it properly, those cravings usually go away for most, or at least get less strong.

hi, yes you can take off the fibre count from the carbs. im still on the induction period, and lost 6 pounds in a week..drastic I know. I have done the atkins diet before and lost two stone. but my bad habits and wine tasting crept back. i want to lose the weight again and maintain this by exercise..which I have begun at the gym, and limiting carbs and the wine. feeling better everyday. have tried limiting to 1200 calories a day on other diets but my job is just too busy for that and im hungry.good luck, keep in touch.x

I found my book at a thrift store for 25 cents. That was 8 years ago. I went from 244 pounds to 183 and stayed there for 2 years on a modified low carb eating regimin . Then I got throat cancer and all during the weeks of radiation when I could not eat and the Onco wanted me to gain weight I had an instant breakfast drink full of vanilla ice cream about 5 times a day.
Needless to say in no time I gained back up to 216 and when I felt good again went back on WOE and got down to 163 and stayed there for 6 years. Lately I have been sliding back into my old carb habits and this morning weighed 175. errrrrrrrrr So I know the solution and I'm back on plan, back on fitday and ready to win. For me Atkins is the only way to go.:) |
does anyone out there know why it is that atkins does not seem to work as well the second ot third time around? my first try years ago it seemed like a metabolic meltdown...25 lbs in 4 weeks...i have tried faithfully twice over the last year and first time only lost 3 lbs, then nothing for 3 weeks. second time i lost nothing at all over 3 weeks. is there some reason for this??

To delete foods from your daily log, go to Calendar, (up above where is says, "Welcome~ 'your name') That will take you to a calendar where you'll see food, weight, etc. Go to the date that you want and click on food, and it will open up your food log for that day. When the log is open, look to the right hand side. You'll see little X's and it will say 'delete'. Just click on that and 'viola', that particular food is gone from your log. :D |
You know that exact thing happened to me. I tried Atkins in 2004 and my weight dropped like a rock. Then I gained it back unfortunately and tried it again. The 2nd , 3rd 4th time etc. it did not work I just stayed the same weight.
Now I am doing Paleo/Primal (which is similar in some ways). But the thing is now I am tracking my weight , food and calories, activity here on Fitday. I think I was eating too many calories on those other failed attempts we will see but so far so good |
I started Atkins this week
Hello!
I started the Adkins diet on Monday, today is Thursday and I havent lost any weight. I think I might be eating to much or maybe its because i am having a cup of coffee in the morning. I dont understand. Does anybody know how soon should I start to see results? I ate 3 slices of turkey bacon 1 egg, 3 egg whites, and 1 cup of coffee with about 2 tbs of heavy cream and 1 equal. is this to much for breakfast? Note ( I also drink atleast 6 to 8 16.9 oz bottles of water a day. (I refill same water bottle) |
Drop the Atkins ~ Drop some calories
The heavy cream has got to go! Plus Atkins is a very unbalanced way to go. You need all three: carbs/fat/protein. Are you actively recording your food journal on a daily basis? and taking the time to create the food nutrition item if it's not automatically in the system? If you've been doing Atkins for a week and have lost no weight ~ and I'm only saying this because Atkins is so bad for you and most people DO loose weight quickly (only to regain it of course) ~ then you're definitely packing away too many calories during the day. Are you exercising? It really all comes down to balance which we all struggle with. Just take a step back and honestly log your food into the journal then scroll down and see what the system states about the amount of calories your putting in as opposed to burning. Balance your food out and drop 500 calories of your current intake off the daily total. If you're eating 2500 calories a day then go to 2000. Remember that it's 3500 calories = 1 pound. Don't expect quick results ~ this will only lead to upset and failure. ;)
|
The only thing I would add is that the burned must be more than the intake. Not just reduce your intake by 500 per day. If you eat 2500 now and reduce that to 2000 but only burn 1800 (just using numbers) you still won't lose weight. You need your burn to be more than your calories in. Wow I took the long way around that I hope it makes sense.
|
Wow, that's interesting. I'm only second go-around with Atkins, too, and it's definitely going slower that it did the first time. I lost 8 pounds on induction but now, 5 months later, I've only lost an addition 12-14 pounds. I was down about 40 by this time my first go-around.
I'm not trying to lose weight quickly. I've basically given myself about 18 months to lose 100 pounds. I thought that maybe I was sort of sabotaging myself simply because I wasn't rushing. But maybe not? Is it possible that there's a physical reason why it doesn't work, or works less well, in subsequent attempts? That might explain a lot. |

The first time someone does Atkins, it's like a miracle cure. You lose weight faster than you ever have in your life. It's a thrill, and it makes us all happy and giddy. You feel great, no more heartburn, and heck..you can fit into your favorite jeans again!! Fast forward say 6 months....something happened, you started falling back into your old eating habits. You either don't realize, or choose to ignore how your body is trying to fight back. Heartburn, IBS, you name it, it's back...with a vengeance. So okay, we hit the Atkins rack once again...no bread, sugar, cookies or cakes. This is when the impatience fairy rears it's ugly head. We are expecting that rush of adrenaline, that surge of "hey I can lose 5 lbs in 3 days and feel like I've accomplished something Look at me, I'm on the path now!!!" But guess what?? It's not going to happen. Why?? Because we *KNOW* what to expect now. We look forward to those same milestones and feelings of utter joy. Instead of being happy with ourselves for taking the bull by the horns and recommitting ourselves to a better way of eating, and eventual weight loss, we think there is something askew with the universe, and the Atkins gods are somehow foiling our attempts to succeed. I don't know about anyone else, but personally, I know for myself when I started Atkins the first time...every morsel that passed thru my lips was weighed and measured to within an inch of accuracy. Which of course caused amazing results. In just over 3 months, I had lost 40 lbs. For personal reasons, I too put Atkins on the back burner and soon gained all the weight back. The second time around, I was a bit more lenient with my measures...if it was to be a tablespoon, and it happened to end up a tbsp and a half....oh well, it was close enough. That attitude in itself meant my weight loss would slow down and the lightning round of dropping pounds was over. <again losing 40 lbs in 5 months> I think if we could all manage to keep that wide eyed wonder and enthusiasm throughout all our attempts at what seems to be our never ending battle, we would find that it wouldn't seem different at all. |
Atkins
Just started yesterday. Any suggestions?
|
I started the '72 version on November 7 and have lost 9 pounds so far. Of course 8 of those pounds were lost in the first week, so now I am getting worried because I have only lost 1 pound this week. I will keep at it for as long as it takes!

When I was doing Atkins, which worked great for me but I lost all I needed to and I was so used to this woe that I just kept losing weight so I slowly got off of it and stayed off of it a long time before I started gaining. Then I just did different eating plans off and on. Anyway what worked for me instead of gum was the Listerene strips that melt in your mouth. I always worried about bad breath and I could have as many of those as I wanted and it never seemed to slow down my weight loss and the stick still turned purple. Hope this helps.:)

Atkins
I'm doing this but not in the 'old' way I used to, where I ate huge portions of protein. Now I keep them moderate and notice that it still keeps me Not Hungry. Cravings can still get me, but I've been 100% good on this all year so far.:D
Anyone starting this in the new year? I lost 2.4 lbs (maybe of water, but I don't really care) in 3 days and now am holding off till Monday to weigh again. I also exercise at least 30 minutes (circuit training, cardio and stretching) every single day. It has made a huge difference in how I feel. Oh, also - I cut out alcohol - when I drink I find my diet goes to H888 in a handbasket, so feeling less bloated and blechy already! |

I can't say doing Atkins but doing low carb high protein. Need to lose weight before my next vacation in March so low carb is the way that works best and fast for me.

I have not been on here for a while and would really like some support. We could email at [email protected]; I will reciprocate if you desire.
I bought fitday pc and like it but it only synch with the online database the first use; I wish I could switch back and forth without buying premium, even if only once a month. I can now log weight daily--an improvement. I had a terrible doctor that told me to lose weight but would not support my diet; in fact she interferred with it. I have problems intaking enough potassium and she did not go along with the RDA 4.7 g/d supported by the 2004 report of the Institute of Medicine. My new doctor is fine and I can take up to 4 10 MEQ (400 mg) potassium citrate per day to supplement the low quantity of food I eat and the kinds of food on the modified Atkins diet. I am trying to find a diet buddy in the L A or Ventura County area but no luck. I find that to lose weight I not only have to keep Net Carbs low but eat less than 1500 calories a day and exercise. I am within 15 pounds of my target weight and it has been very slow; each holiday like Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's I gain a few pounds and have to start over and with each problem with the doctor I completely got off of the diet. With the new year and new doctor I am back on it. I use the Keto Stix by Bayer to see if I am burning fat. Anyone want to be my diet buddy? |
Sounds interesting; when I break 190 I might try it for a while.
|
I am doing modified Atkins. I have trouble controlling hunger at supper time and after. I have great difficulty achieving 40 net carbs, much less 20 and keeping calories under 1800. I should be losing a pound a week.
I would like to have a diet buddy; my post to this effect was moved to a diet buddy thread. I am reposting here. I have had no hits. |

Are you on facebook? We have a great Atkins support group there...if you are getting enough protein (based on height) and fat, you should not be feeling hungry. I had trouble with habit-grazing after dinner until I had to start checking my blood sugar two hours after dinner. Now I have few problems not eating after dinner until I check my blood sugar--then I have to wait 8 hours for the fasting check in the morning, so I don't have a late night snack any more. But, it is imperative that you get enough protein and HEALTHY fats in your diet to kill the hunger.
You can find a diet-buddy at the Lo-Carb Fat Camp on facebook. You can also check the fitday page on facebook--you might get a hit there. I suppose a lot of my grazing is an unhealthy response to anxiety. I am working on it. I have some real problems to work through. |
Have you looked at the Primal Blueprint? It is a "natural foods" version of Atkin's and has a great website and forum for support and questions about low-carb diets.

It is not a life-long diet plan. You will still have to train yourself how to eat day-to-day to maintain your losses. |

At the top, you can follow links to other phases. Remember to count carbs AND calories. Some things just aren't worth the calories (like the creamer in your coffee) Coffee has a very nice flavor without all the additives ... you'll get used to it. :) |

No cheese? no butter? I think not!!! I agree 'no creamer' but real cream is allowed instead. It is not a life-long diet plan. You will still have to train yourself how to eat day-to-day to maintain your losses. Remember the restrictions of induction are just for two weeks (Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002/3) or one week (Dr Atkins Diet Revolution 1972) and even the latest book brought out by the Atkins company in the last few years (A New Atkins for a New You) advocates moving on to add more carbs and food groups in order to make it a workable way of eating for life! |
