Right at the moment, FitDay does not track net carbs, just total carbs. I've been told that the PC version does, but I can't personally vouch for that fact. Net carb tracking may be one of the "new features" that are coming online at some time in the (possibly) near future.

new atkins dieter--any others here?

my name is patti. been dieting for a month and lost 6 lbs... think i should have done better as atkins usually helps it pour off! i lost about 10 lbs before the holidays and kept it off so it's a total of 16 lbs. Im at 182 right now so i cut myself off just before i topped off at 200 lbs...
I want to get down to 150 which is where i was most of my life and really worked for me pretty well but it's a struggle.
i discovered the delicious atkins snack bars and started eating 2 a night (at least) NOT GOOD!!!
I've got no self control once i get started!
if anyone else is working the atkins program i'd love to hear how you're doing.
have a great day everyone and good luck with your weight loss goals!

I just create a custom food and plug in what would be the net carb count.

That is what I do. I am in stage 3 of Atkins and eat about 50 grams of net carbs a day. It is not at all hard because I really do not want all that flour/sugar/starch. The diet has totally weaned me from such foods and I do not feel deprived by declining cakes/cookies/fries.

How can you do that?
I am on day 4, lost 1.6 pound. I found it is hard to eliminate sugar in cooking. Any advices?

Just jot down all the info you have on the food, the click create food and enter the details. Then save it.

If you go on the Atkins website there is lots of help/advice/recipes. If you cannot find what you want you can ask on the forum.

RaceToBFit 02-26-2011 02:53 AM

Hello! I am new to FitDay and I am following the Atkins Diet. I started Atkins in July 2010 and followed it very closely until October of 2010. I then had some major life changes happening and slowed a little. Then we moved in December 2010 and I was a little overwhelmed so used my carb addiction to ease the transition.

I started back on a low carb way of eating this month and went back into induction phase about a week ago. I am in Ketosis now and after the inital Atkins "flu" I am feeling very good. My joint pain and muscle aches are pretty much gone. I suffer from fibromyalgia and I have never felt better than I do on Atkins.

I am going to post on here regularly to hold myself accountable. Hopefully, I can have some Atkins buddies to help and help me!

Looking forward to getting to know some of you.

My day so far...

3 boiled eggs w/TBS butter, 1 tsp olive oil and salt
1 cup of sliced cucumber with the peel (I find leaving the peel on alleviates constipation)
30 oz of water
My supplements
1.5 mile walk

beccafries 02-27-2011 11:11 PM

i know a few ppl they have done pretty good on the Atkins..Keep it up everybody!!

DodyW 03-02-2011 08:44 AM

Yes, since October, find it easy to follow but in last month the lbs are going off a lot more slowly, and I'm not cheating. Any advice?

1st week on Atkins and I'm thrilled

desperate, I have come to Atkins after only being able to lose 1#per week by cutting back on foods and getting up to an hour on the treadmill. Well, my first week with atkins and the same 3 miles per hour ( although I kicked it up to 6 days this week) I have lost a fabulous 8#'s and an inch on my waist.
Now I am looking for support to stay on induction until I drop 55#'s by my 55th birthday in August. anyone out there wanna "pal-up" with me and keep me motivated. I know me - and the plateaus are a bear... will need some help and perspective.. You can say to yourself - progress - not perfection --- but it helps so much more to hear it from a friend.
Thanks for the shout out.
ricky

legrandr 03-05-2011 04:29 AM

me me me - count on me. I can understand falling off the wagon, and sympathize with those life transitions. I want to initiate the transition this time, and decide what changes I want and need for my soul. It's never to late to bloom?

texas_lowcarbman 03-09-2011 03:31 AM

I just started Atkins 3 weeks ago and have already lost 16 pounds. The carb cravings are gone and I feel great. Atkins is a WOE that is a life long commitment. I have a long way to go but am motivated to stay on track for the long haul.

Pregnant on Atkins

Until my wife got pregnant (2.5 long years ago), I'd been following a pretty principled GI diet, which works well for me. I fell off the wagon in a huge way (more so now that she's pregnant again and eating accordingly) and I've decided to start taking off some of this extra weight (40 lbs) by doing something a little more restrictive than the GI approach (but with its own appeal, being a little friendlier to fats)... once I get close to my goal weight I'll have to re-evaluate whether Atkins is still right for me, but my understanding is that once you hit the later phases, Atkins and GI share a lot, so maybe that won't be the case.

Anyhow, hope I can take off a big chunk of the weight before the second baby comes. :)

If your wife is also trying the diet, be careful with this diet when pregnant. In the first book ever published, Dr Atkins himself warns against phase 1 for pregnant women. He states that a modified form of the diet (owl or above) is safer.

legrandr 03-09-2011 11:46 AM

wow - that's over 5#'s a week. I soo much want to follow suite. I am nearing the 200 mark, never to see it again and its really exciting to hear you have gotten such good results, maybe I can too.
found some carb creep in my calcium supplement viactin - 3 carbs per unit and I was doing 2 or 3 per day. Going our for some regular tablets and put these away for my owl.
also, happy to report I "like" mock mashed potatoes. yippee.
Hitting my 2 week mark and 10# down... hope now that I found the culprit... I'll get another 8 off and catch up with you, Tex.. then its the long haul.

past the point of no return

Thrilled this morning to see the scale tip under 200. Remotivated for exercize - but still not thrilled for the treadmill for an hour. Guess its time to break out some exercise videos. I have a bunch on vhs and need to convert them to cd since my tv won't show the picture, I only get sound and don't want to pull the cords apart to see whats going on. Today, the goal is to get to all 20 carbs - Its a little harder than expected to get that many, but vegies are essential. Being winter I have to buy frozen and none too thrilled with eating spinach all the time, feel like popeye. So off I go to try flax seeds. never did them before but going for the gold means changing - and I'm up for the change.

Atkins For Life

I started the atkins diet 2 weeks ago and have lost 8lbs!!!! I have seen a huge difference in my body, from my problem area in my butt and thighs being less bumpy to finally being able to see my abs. My energy and moods are at an all time high! I workout 5 to 6 days a week doing total body conditioning, weight training, and spinning classes with more energy than I know what to do with! The carb cravings are 100% gone and I feel full much quicker.
Stats
Female
Current weight: 163lbs
Goal weight: 145lbs
Height: 5'9"
Age: 26
Activity level: Very active

Tips: First and far most READ THE BOOK!!!! Second, try to prepare all meals at home and eat about 12-15 grams of crabs from veggies. Third, always be prepared (Ex: I went to a festival and all the smells of those delicious tempting foods about swept me off my feet, but instead of picking my favorite and cheating I grabbed an atkins bar out of my purse and was more then satisfied) Fourth, find support in someone that is also following the diet.

beccafries 03-17-2011 05:37 AM

Keep it up...Atkins does work!

kmcguire1 03-23-2011 01:58 PM

Also just starting out on Atkins. Tried it once years ago and lost 20 lbs. I have a friend who has lost a considerable amt. of weight and Atkins was/is her secret. She seemed to dissappear before my eyes. I was eating a Paleo"ish" diet for about a year (until a recent sugar binge that threw everything off). I want to loose 45 lb. I've lost 8 after 3 days (water obviously), have finally entered the ketosis state and feel thinner. I can't wait to see the jiggling dissappear. I'm going strong on Day 6. Have been eating a little too much cheese this week I think. Averaging about 1700 cal/daily, 105g fat/ 100g protien/ 18g net carbs. Preparation is the key

parksy1 03-29-2011 01:41 PM

I just starting doing Atkins 3 days ago and am staying below 20 carbs per day but am eating alot of fat and calories. Is there a limit to the amount of calories and fat you can have per day. I am very confused!!!

Atkins Carbs vs Calories confused

Hello. This is my 3rd day on Atkins and I have lost 1 lb. I know and understand about tracking our carbs, but what about the calories. How important are the calories when doing Atkins. I guess I just assumed that low carbs meant low calories. Truthfully I haven't paid attention to the calories. I have done Atkins before and didn't succeed, (my own fault) but now I have to make this work. Anyway, what about the calories? Should I be focusing on those numbers too? Comments please. :o

Stick with it!!!! I started on March 8th and have lost 11 pounds!!!! Track your intake!!!!!! I am in phase 2 and eat between 22-26g of carbs a day with my calories being about 1100 or less!!! I have learned it is not about calories, but your carb count. Naturally when eating lean meats low in carbs they are going to be higher in calories, so focus on carbs not so much calories. One of the biggest things that helped me was planning my meals out in advance and sticking to that plan! I also always carry an atkins bar in my bag just in case I get a temptation or am in a situation where no Atkins friendly options exists. Drinks lots of water, avoid caffeine ( noticed it delayed weight loss for me), and excerise! The first few weeks can be a struggle, but once get over the hump you will NEVER look back!!!!!

My daily Menu (very dull I admit and isnt for everyone)
Breakfast 7:30am: 4 eggs boiled, peeled, and yolk removed. I place cheddar cheese and either salsa or hot sauce in them. Also great snack!
Snack 10:30am: 15 almonds raw
Snack 12:00: String cheese
Lunch 1:30: Green leaf lettuce, cucumber, and broccoli
2 cups of homemade egg drop soup minus soy and sesame oil
Snack 3:30: Atkins shake
Dinner: 4oz Lean meat (Chicken, lean turkey burger, flank steak, pork)
Vegetable blend with butter
*Lots and Lots of water!!!!

Congratulations on your weight loss so far -- it sounds like you are sticking to your plan! I'm not trying to be a nay-sayer, but I was just curious why you concluded that the carb count is more important than the calorie count. I don't really know your stats, but I think <1100 calories plus exercise would constitute a reduced calorie diet for most people. How do you know its the carbs and not the calories that are causing the weight loss?

I was just curious about your experiences -- I have a close friend that wants to try Atkins, so my ears have been perked (so to speak) on the subject lately.

First two days no appreciable weight loss but no weight gain either. Today I have lost 3 pounds, probably mostly water. Gradually upping exercise.
I could use some support and encouragement and a diet buddy.

The important thing to remember is that it's very difficult to take in high calories eating clean food. That's why calories are not so much of an issue. Even on my high fat, high proetien, low carb Anabolic Diet I struggle to get in enough calories a day so I don't think most prople following the Atkins really have to worry about calories; just carbs. Unless you are constantly eating I think it's not something to worry about.

Can't you use Ganular splender which comes in a big yellow box for cooking?;)

ptorres 04-08-2011 05:42 AM

good info. thanks. The past 4 days have been crazy and I haven't been eating like I should. The scale reminded me of this. No excuses, it's all on me! Thanks again. I'll focus on carbs. this will make it easier for me. I tend to panick and then I get frustrated and I have to keep telling myself that nothing is perfect, especially me. I will stumble but i HAVE to do this. sorry, now I'm starting to ramble. thanks again.

Frustration!! Help

Yes, I've been on Atkins Induction for 2 weeks now...previously have lost lots of weight quickly on Atkins...this time around, only about 1/2 pound so far. I haven't had any sugar, flour of any kind in one month. Not sure what I'm doing wrong; my clothes are still tight, my belly flab hasn't shrunk..basically I am frustrated! I am on a very low dose of antidepressant, as well as nasal steroid sprays for allergies...doc insists that this won't cause weight gain (I've gained 17 pounds in last 2 years), but I'm not sure. Any suggestions?

Kathy13118 04-12-2011 08:43 AM

cllinfa,
You are in fitday. It has a food log feature. You can measure and put in your food intake for a day. Do that for a few days (I know, people don't like to measure and count, but just three days is all you need...) and be scrupulous about it WHILE you do the induction for Atkins. Don't obsess. Just keep doing what you are doing and see the actual calorie count of what you are eating.

Look at what fitday says is your calorie baseline for your current weight and activity level ('sedentary' is the best bet to specify, because you don't want to overestimate your calorie burning). Then see what the calorie-in, calorie-out balance is telling you.

The reason I say this is because IF it is more difficult to lose with the medications you're on (meaning, they are contributing to the slow weight loss), at least your doctor will be able to see this. Don't write it down for him - actually log on to fitday right on a computer in his office and show him!

All the speculation about what medications do is just that. You didn't even mention what medications you are on and even if you did, that wouldn't tell anything definitive about your slow weight loss.

You can always just do the obvious - keep on with the Atkins induction and accept that weight loss is going to be slow and then maybe speed up and then slow down again and then speed up again. Low-carbing is a choice that people make and it works just like any other diet. It's not magic. As you can plainly see now that you're doing it for the second time!

If it's a diet you LIKE, then stick to it only because you like it. This particular thread in fitday has reports from people who have done Atkins before and lost weight. What this tells you is that they went off it and put the weight back on and now they are about to diet again and lose again. Maybe they will put it back on again and maybe not. It's like any other diet that way.

You have a doctor. Maybe you can have some sort of nutritional counseling from someone in his office. It may depend on how much weight you have to lose and how important it is to your health at your age, with your medical background. No one knows that background like you do and like your doctor does. Good luck, whatever you choose!

mariang 04-12-2011 12:06 PM

Hey,

I've been doing Atkins for almost two months now - I've lost 18.5 lbs (155-136.5, 5'4")

I find what has worked for me is to do the ratio 70%fat-25%protein-5%carbs (no more than 20 or 25 carbs/day)

Since this proves to be quite restrictive, I take supplements (especially potassium) to make sure I'm getting the nutrients I need.

While this is by no means a "lifestyle" (I am currently transitioning back to 50g of carbs per day), it was wonderful for weight loss and I never felt tired or sick or anything like that.

FreedomForMe 04-20-2011 01:24 AM

Hi Everyone!

I am sort of new to FitDay...signed up a month or so ago but really never used it...

I tell myself that I am on Atkins, but I must admit that I on it "sloppy". I know this works, I have had success before; I need tidy up my eating and truly be on plan. I typically stay on induction levels for a long time since I have so much to lose (80 lbs). I made a vow to myself today that I will finally finally do this weight loss deal for MYSELF! Not for my husband, not for my kids, not for a special occasion -- but for ME...because if I don't take care of me, no one else is going to; it's all up to me!

I want Freedom from being fat! And I deserve it!

campsix 04-21-2011 12:05 PM
