Thanks I didn't want to get into a panic and call my pcp.
I am following The New Atkins for the New You. I also have the cookbook so I have plenty of choices as I do see this as a lifetime change as well. I guess my next question is do I stay on the avg. 35 carbs..I am thinking if I go back to the 20 carb days as I did the 1st couple of days the loss may be to overwhelming and set me up for disappointments in the months to come. I have set my goal to be 200lbs by 1/1/13 I think that is realistic and obtainable. |

Hello Everyone!
I'm new on this forum and I am on the second week of Induction (Atkins). My current weight is 72 kilos and I am struggling to go back to my old weight (64). During my first week of Induction I only lost 500 grams...quite disappointing despite following the diet as perfect as possible.
But I hope that by inputting my daily carbs intake, I will succeed this time. Anyone has tried Psyllium Husks? I'm having serious constipation problems. thank you! and Hope to hear from you! |
Hi
The Atkins diet is very precise from what I have learned. I did have 5 chips and salsa in week 1 and I put on almost 3 lbs. So I stunted my progress. It took days to drop that weight again. I did lose 14lbs the 1st week but those chips killed me so starting again. Drinking a lot of water is the key. I still need to incorporate the broth 1 in the am and 1 in the pm. I can't use the substitutes since they give me headaches. I am currently having coffee in the am with cream no sugar but yuk. |
10 lbs. Lost in First 2 Weeks!
Hey everyone,
I just ended my first 2 weeks on an Atkins style diet. Only about 5 out of the 14 days would be technically considered "induction" meaning 20 carbs or less. The rest of the 14 days I was in the 30-80 carb range. I think I've got my bearings now and have developed a somewhat consistent menu to keep me on track. I'm staying motivated by reading and re-reading Gary Taubes book Why We Get Fat. I managed to stay away from the scale for the entire 2 weeks and was glad I did. I can't wait to see what happens in 2 months. The diet is fairly easy and tackles my one biggest pitfall on other diets...HUNGER! I do miss the carbs some times but I never feel hungry and if I need something sweet I have a slice of atkins cheesecake. Anyone else tried this? Its awesome, if you like cheesecake! |
Atkins Bars Net Carb Count Calculation
Hi Everyone,
Reviving this thread with a question about how Atkins calculates the net carbs in their bars. I ate two bars this week - one in lieu of a meal, and one for stress eating at work. The Atkins daybreak Chocolate Hazelnut bar claims to have 3g net carbs, but the nutritional info says 18g carbs, 1g fibre, 1g sugar, and 7g sugar alcohols. The Atkins Endulge coconut bar also claims to have 3g net carbs, and nutritional info says 19g carbs, 2g fibre, 1g sugar, and 4g sugar alcohols. I can't see how that could be translated into 3g net carbs (not that I'm doubting them, I just don't get how they calculated it)! Anyone out there who can explain it to me? |
I've come to my personal conclusion that net carbs are just a marketing trick. "Atkins" bars are still a processed product that they're trying to get you to buy. Based on the numbers you gave, the net carb should be 10g for hazelnut and 13g for indulge.
For nutrition labels, I've realized that starches are the only unaccounted factor, but they still easily break down into free sugar. Free sugar is listed under "sugar," so net carb = starch = basically sugar = total carb - sugar alcohols (undigested) - fiber (not metabolized as carb, but as fat). Nutrition labels don't require starches to be listed separately, but net carb is supposed to essentially measure starch content. Maybe it's just bad math on the part of the marketers. |
Atkins Bars
I too am very skeptical about these Atkins bars. You have to remember that the whole idea of the low carb diet is to reduce insulin levels in the body. Experts have known for quite some time about the effects of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fats) on insulin levels, but have less knowledge of what other types of additives and chemicals have on insulin levels. For example, in the old adkins books they recommended not drinking coffee because it could raise your insulin levels. Today you'll find few low carb enthusiasts who believe this. The Atkins bars are basically processed food that includes many differant ingredients. Who knows what kind of effect these additives have on your insulin levels? If I were you I would stick to whole foods like meat, eggs, salad greens and healthy oils.

I too am skeptical about those bars. The pattern for me was when I'd treat myself to one of those bars, my weight loss would stall. Without, things went find, with... not so much.
|
I drop weight like crazy on induction. I did induction for a month and lost 32 pounds. Since then I have slowly switched to just counting calories and I'm still losing as I've lost 31 more in the last 2 months. If I plateau I'll do a day or two of induction and it seems to jump start my weight loss again.

Hi everyone - I'm back to Atkins after a few years. I lost 25 pounds on it a few years ago and have found that of all the diets, my body seems to like it the best. I always feel much more clear headed and sharper when I eat fewer carbs.
I agree with those who suggest sticking to clean foods when doing Atkins - forget the bars and other processed foods and stick to real foods - vegetables, meat and dairy and it will work! The original plan from 1972 is the way to go. The only thing I really miss is a glass of wine for the first few weeks while on Induction! Jemma |
Diet Update: 20 pounds down!
Just a quick diet update. Its been a bit over 6 weeks for me on Atkins and I have lost a little over 20 pounds! All side effects of the diet (Atkins flu: headaches, tiredness, cramps) have been gone since about the third week. Symptoms disappeared when I included 1-2 cups of chicken stock a day (for sodium replenishment). I started incorporating exercise in the diet about a month into it and have taken a cautious approach. I have taken Gary Taubes (author of Why We Get Fat) warnings of exercise making you hungry seriously. I've been doing about 20min of cardio 6 days a week at a medium pace and have avoided brutally difficult workouts like the plague.

Hey, been a while since I posted.
I'm down at least 36 lbs since I started. I'm still (mostly) on-plan, though there are times (6+ hour car trips in an un-air-conditioned truck when it's over 100 degrees out), when I'll consciously "cheat". (That car ride? Calls for a milkshake at some point, to help drop core temp... And my migraines sometimes call for dark chocolate. Seriously, for me, it helps... a LOT.) Also? My scale is busted! So I'm not sure where my actual weight is. I've really got to get a new one, but all the money this summer has been going towards camping. Some things I've seen: "Net carbs" -- Net carbs is total carbs - fiber. Don't believe them when they tell you sugar alcohols don't count -- for far too many people, they do. I've known too many people who stall or even gain from a single Atkins bar... If you want a tasty alternative to the bars, that take about 1/2 hour to make, try this: Ingredients:
Combine dry ingredients. Beat eggs, and add coconut oil, vanilla. Add wet ingredients to dry, and mix well. Form into bars (1" x 4" to get a dozen). Bake at 350 on a well-greased cookie sheet (use more coconut oil!) for 10-15, until a bar flicked with a fingernail gives a "tap" sound. Nutrition Facts User Entered Recipe 12 Servings Amount Per Serving Calories 162.1 Total Fat 14.6 g Saturated Fat 5.2 g Polyunsaturated Fat 3.6 g Monounsaturated Fat 5.5 g Cholesterol 30.8 mg Sodium 12.3 mg Potassium 123.8 mg Total Carbohydrate 5.3 g Dietary Fiber 4.2 g Sugars 0.7 g Protein 5.0 g Vitamin A 1.1 % Vitamin B-12 1.3 % Vitamin B-6 1.7 % Vitamin C 0.4 % Vitamin D 1.7 % Vitamin E 10.5 % Calcium 4.6 % Copper 5.6 % Folate 1.7 % Iron 7.1 % Magnesium 6.6 % Manganese 22.4 % Niacin 2.0 % Pantothenic Acid 0.5 % Phosphorus 6.0 % Riboflavin 5.8 % Selenium 0.7 % Thiamin 3.6 % Zinc 2.8 % *Percent Daily Values are based on a 2,000 calorie diet. Your daily values may be higher or lower depending on your calorie needs. OPTIONS: Add sweetner of your choice. Add 1 Cup blueberries, which drives calories per serving to 168.9 and carbs to 2.5/serving. Change up the spices. (A friend used anise, instead of the "spice-cookie" spices. Hubby wants to try using mint.) (Good for all Atkins phases past Induction.) |

I don't know my current weight... but looking at my body right now, it bears no resemblance to the "me" of January. My legs look great, my arms are thinner, and my torso has a non-blob shape again. I don't do bars or shakes, I eat whole foods, that I make from raw ingredients in my kitchen. And the fat falls off. |

I've lost now 13lb in 2 weeks, I stuck to strick atkins for the fist 2 weeks, no shakes or bars, but cooked all the food by myself, and lots of eggs, as I'm quite poor to have steak 3 times a day :D I'm also aware that some of it was water weight, but it did feel good to see the scale move, I weighed myself daily, but from next monday I shall start doing it weekly, as the weight loss is suppose slow down a bit, and weighing daily can discourage. But deffanately sticking to this woe, I feel so much better. :)

Hi folks, first day on induction and using fitday for purposes of counting. I did 2 weeks induction before and lost 10kg (20lbs) but got complacent too quick and have put 4kg back on...
I quit smoking in Jan and since then have gained a lot of weight, 20kg (40lbs), happy i quit the smoking but the change had a massive impact on my metabolism I guess.. Hoping to lose weight and get back some level of fitness also... |
I have started the atkins diet as well it's been about 16 days and I have already lost almost 16 lbs. I was 271 now I am almost 255. Very happy about the results thus far. I have done low carb/atkins/or my own version of the atkins and it always works for me. Yes I am eating and I plan to keep doing this for another 3 months. Sometimes, when I do feel like eating something sweet. I will eat an apple or eat a piece of halloween candy; so far it hasn't hurt me. I think tricking the body is the key to weight loss.

Is there a good site to get the original plan for Atkins and to know the full parameters for the INDUCTION? I too love the Less Carbs thing and would love to do this INDUCTION period instead of just the diabetic diet (I am not diabetic, just love the diet). Very Interested... Thanks. LJPINEAU1

Balance
Fitme, Thanks for the link. That was a good article. People recently have been asking me how I've lost (some) weight, usually with some variation of a question of what diet I'm on,. I tell them "a balanced diet."
When I think about it a bit, it's three things:

I got confused, when I read an article about Atkins diet.
They say the problem with this diet ... is its reliance on protein because this diet tends to eliminate carbs and sugar. High protein diets out the body into a state of ketosis causing head ache, bad breath, nausea and carb cravings due to depleted glycogen stores. As for the 'bad breath', -- it comes with the territory. If it bothers you a breath mint will fix you right up. So is that true? |

Started Atkins again 01/07/13
Hi,
Back about 12 years ago now, my brother was diagnosed as obese and had to start taking high blood pressure medicine. They also believed him to be diabetic. He had enough and started Atkins. He lost 55lbs on Atkins and then started body building. He has done several body building and power lifting competitions and 12 years later is in the best shape of his life at 44 years old. He was my inspiration for starting Atkins. I was 34 years old and recently single. Facing dating for the first time in my life at a weight of almost 180lbs was just not appealing. I started Atkins with a goal of about 150lbs. I surpassed that goal and maintained a size 6 at 130-137 lbs for 4 1/2 years! I had never found anything in my whole life that had worked for me but Atkins seemed to be the way. In the past several years I started my own business and now work 2 full time jobs (the day job and my business). I stopped eating right and stopped exercising. It's taken a long time to gain the weight back and I've gone up and down but this fall, I lost my father and since that time have been eating for the past 3 months from grief and convenience. I gained 15lbs since October and basically am starting at 170lbs. After only a few days on Atkins I have to say that I feel a lot better. I'm actually trying to restrict my calories this time as well as carbs. I can maintain my weight indefinitely by limiting my carbs but I seem to need a bit of calorie restriction to really lose weight and lose quickly which is why FitDay works so well. Makes it easy to log my food and really see what I'm doing. So, I'm about to turn 41 in February and I'm really hoping to find the lasting commitment I had to the program before. I still have 2 jobs and too many obligations for my time but the farther away I get from fitness, the less I am able to do. Thanks for listening, I needed to write about this and remind myself about my journey on this plan. It has changed my life completely before and it can do it again. BTW, I love to cook and after many years on Atkins I am an ace at making substitutes for almost anything I might be craving. I have tons of fabulous recipes and tips for making things taste good. :) |
Atkins diet
Would you mind explaining me what do you exactly mean by Atkins diet and in what way it is helpful?
|
Can relate
So many things you've said ring true for me as well. I was a faithful low carber for over 4 yrs. Went from 177 to 117 in about 5 months. Maintained for years. 16 yr relationship gone, relocated cross country, single mom of 3 boys, lost a job and 'relapsed' with my eating and endulged in nightly drinks.
Back at 174 and one week in to induction. On my second week, beginning Monday I will start to also cut back on calories, which is basically only having chicken, fish and occasional pork. I think the biggest change and adaption that Im dealing with is my Splenda. I have dropped down to 6 packets per day from about 12. Best of luck to you and all the others that join in on this wonderful way of life. Are you recipes posted anywhere. I'd be interested to see. :)

No one is the same
Good advise, in part.
Everyone is not the same. When I started Atkins in 2004, I did start and end 5 yrs later, on a 'modified' Atkins. Meaning, I was not going by the book, word for word. But definitely doing low carb, with much success. I have not refreshed and read the book. I, personally don't need it. You stick to low carb, with little to no sugars, more fat than proteins and you will see results.

Read it. Understand it. Realize it's a lifestyle change. You will never stop eating like this. If you decide to go with it, don't experiment with the induction phase. Later, you'll get a little room to try different things, but once past the first two or three weeks, you'll understand that starches and sugar are responsible for making you fat, and you'll avoid food that contain unnecessary amounts of carbs and sugar. Above all, don't make up your own diet. The silliest posts imaginable start with "I'm on a modified Atkins, ..." Uh, no they're not on Atkins. They're on "A Goofy Made-Up Eating Plan That Stole the Atkins Name Diet" Best of luck. |
Splenda vs Great Value Brand
So Splenda box says their is a minute amount of carbs in each packet. I have 5 per day which registers at something like 5.4 carbs total. However my Great Value brand of Splenda states 0 carbs. I understand the concept that some products reflect a 0 carb count, when in reality it could really have a carb count of <1. Those of you who use the Great Value Brand what do you log as carbs? What does everyone recommend I log, when using the Great Value brand? I have googled the nutrition facts and it tells me the same as on the box.
Many thanks :) |
do the obvious... Atkins
I am doing Atkins and it works... atleast the original version does... last night I had ribs and lost 3 lbs by this morning...
If you think about it there are several factors that have caused weight gain.. of course inactivity and most of that started with the Automobile..... and we ate meat daily as we did not always have veggies... we would slaughter a chicken or a hog... veggies were seasonal... mid summer til the first frost... Weight was not a problem... where did we get our carbs? Veggies, fruit and bread which was a staple in most homes... Atkins works for me!! Not the new one... and the Atkins suppliments are not good... My best to you alll..... Love you |

KetoStix & multivitamins was/were required. (a supply of breath-mints didn't hurt) You start @ zero gram of carbs/day, unlimited eggs, meat, fats, & butter. Snacking was pork rinds & nitrate free jerky. After the first week, you move up 5 grams of carbs /day each week, allowed snacking was cashews, walnuts plus the pork rinds/jerky. Keep adding carbs (cooked leafy greens) 5 grams/day each wk until you drop out of ketosis, then dial it back into weight loss territory. That was the conclusion of 'induction'. Once you'd re-established yourself back in ketosis and losing weight, you could add salads (oil & vinegar only) and then cheese, as long as you kept losing weight. This was 'On-going weight loss'. Sometime around 1992, Dr. Atkins discovered many of his patients were 'cheating', yet still losing weight at the same rate as 'non-cheaters'. These dieters admitted that they had steamed broccoli, spinach, avocados, cheese, sour cream, etc. ... So the doctor revamped the induction phase to allow these foods, and raised the initial carb limit to 20 gram/day to accommodate 'em. Since starting @ 0g/day was silly and generally turned people off from the git-go; -- and since just about everybody would hit ketosis within a couple of days anyhow, might as well get rid of 0gm/day initial week and start off at a more acceptable 20g/day. By 2002, after Dr. Atkins had the basics tweaked & refined enough to appeal to the general public, he released his Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution, 2002 version. This book broke the diet into 4 phases: Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss, Pre- Maintenance, and Lifetime Maintenance. KetoStix became optional. Carb counting changed by allowing you to deduct dietary fiber from veggies, if you wished. It also marked the introduction of Atkins Nutritionals, a line of Atkins approved commercial crap such as Advantage Bars, Advantage Shakes, Advantage Meals, Advantage This, Advantage That, blah, blah, bleah. Since then, the main changes to the diet are the nod to PC tom-foolery such as 'watch your saturated fats', and eat more fish instead of beef, or pork, or whatever 'death-on-a-plate' meat is bothering the Center for Science in the Public Interest at the moment ... HTH YW |
Thank you.
That was very interesting. I was wondering how different the first Atkin's diet was compared to today's version.
 |
I started about 2 months ago and have lost 18 pounds so far! It's definitely the easiest diet to maintain. I really don't miss bread, pasta, rice, potatoes etc. AT ALL. I do have quite a sweet tooth though so I do have a tiny problem cutting the chocolate. If I can't stand it anymore, I usually just throw a little splenda into some cream and eat that for my treat :) Anyway 15 pounds to my goal weight!

I did Atkins a few years back.. you lose weight pretty quickly, but i gained most of the weight back after I stopped doing it.
A trainer friend told me that the "carb" in my body are bounded by water molecules, so the quick weight loss was kind of from a bunch of water weight. Anybody else had the same experience? |

I'll repeat this for the slow readers: You don't 'stop' Atkins. Atkins is a lifetime diet. You will eat like this until you die. A trainer friend told me that the "carb" in my body are bounded by water molecules, so the quick weight loss was kind of from a bunch of water weight. One molecule of glucose will bind to eight molecules of H2O, those eight molecules of water are released/recycled when the glucose is stored as glycogen & lipids in your adipose tissue (body fat) cells. When your body needs energy, the liver draws on the glycogen in your cells first (because it is metabolically 'cheap'), converts the glycogen back to glucose (with the eight molecules of water), which is then converted into ATP & pyruvate for the Krebs cycle. The eight molecules of water are released for another round of the glycogen -> glucose -> pyruvate process. That's why you are supposed to drink a minimum of 64oz of water/day as your liver draws down the glycogen to guard against de -hydration. If you don't need that much water, no biggie. Your kidneys & bladder know how to take care of it. Too much water is fine, too little water is bad news. Anybody else had the same experience? Atkins just gets you into a lipid-based metabolism (arguably) faster than most, so it's more noticeable. |
Low carb!
So this is my first post on like any message board ever so let me know if I do it wrong lol
So I've been doing low carb for roughly two months now and am down 22lbs. since my start. I love it! And I've been reading some of these posts about people getting off of Atkins and blah blah blah... I'm wondering: why would people get off of it? I mean, I was addicted to bread. Like, wake up and the first thing I would want is two pieces of wonderful toasted Dave's bread with a ton of butter. FIRST THING. After about three days, I wasn't craving bread daily and now that I've been doing it for about two months, I only even kind of want bread if I go out to Red Lobster or Olive Garden (but now instead of eating 12 bread sticks or 10 garlic biscuits, I have one). I was controlled by my cravings and it was no way to live. I love my life and way of eating now. Why would anyone give that up?! Also, now that I don't eat that crap anymore, if I do, it actually makes me sick. It's like my stomach says, "Come on, Stacy, pull your head out of your ass." lol it's a really good accountability tool! |
