Forget Team Building: How Marijuana Boosts Your Productivity at Work

People have been getting high on the job since forever. Now that marijuana is legal, though, employers are worried that it could harm productivity. Will it?

If you work in a corporate setting, chances are you’re used to hearing your higher-ups talk about workflow, productivity, and efficiency. In other words, they don’t want you to have any fun.

While a nose-to-the-grindstone approach can indeed improve efficiency, so can a little something called creativity. Sadly, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ Job Outlook 2016 survey, as few as 23 percent of employers care about seeing creativity on a prospective employee’s resume.

So, this article is for those of you who do have a profession that actually allows you to be creative in some way, shape, or form. We all know the stereotype: smoking pot makes people terrible workers. They get distracted and lazy, and lose focus or become forgetful.

Surprisingly, even with the legalization of marijuana across several states across the U.S., attitudes towards its use in the workplace haven’t changed much. Marijuana, even when used for medical purposes, is largely seen as a “risk” to employers.

Many employers have opted to keep their drug testing policies. While having a drug testing policy is definitely a good idea for employers who need to ensure employees meet certain safety standards, what about those in non-safety sensitive fields?

New first-person accounts and research suggest that some creative workers might actually be more productive when they get high.

Illustrators, graphic designers, musicians, producers, game designers, web designers, artists, animators, and photographers are just a few examples of creative professionals who might benefit from smoking on the job.

But First, Make Sure You Get the Right Kind of Marijuana

The first step towards a productive high is always making sure that you choose the right cannabis. Most regular users know their strains: indica and sativa. Indica strains are psychoactive, producing a body high that will likely make it hard for you to get up off the couch. They’re best if you simply want to relax and wind down.

Sativa strains, on the other hand, provide both stimulation and a sense of well-being. They’re more likely to leave you feeling energized and creative, and are hence the best option for working.

Creativity Beyond the Arts

We don’t need to look far to find successful people who’ve admitted that they smoke marijuana to boost their creativity. Filmmaker Seth Rogen has long been an advocate, while even Steve Jobs admitted that marijuana made him feel “relaxed and creative.”

Common sense says that if the task is engaging to you, the right high may be able to help you to tap into your creativity — as long as there's no heavy machinery involved. You might even find yourself thinking about whatever you're doing in a novel way.

You may lose your job for it, but hey, you probably didn't even like that job anyway.
