Had a call from my mechanic today and he said that the repair would be more like $300 instead of $700. (YES!!) How? Donuts! Yep, that's right... donuts! He had a really hard time with the brake job that he did for me a couple of weeks ago, I appreciated his extra effort and so I brought him a huge box of assorted, fresh, sweet rolls and donuts about a week ago. So today, he made some calls and got the parts for my car for half price.
My husband thinks it's hysterical because that's the third time that I've used bakery to get what I need. I even got out of a speeding ticket once by offering the officer his choice out of a box of bakery that I had just picked up a few minutes before. He laughed and let me go. Ah, the magic of food! The way to a man's heart truly is his stomach.
And, to top it off, I ran into an old boss that was actually more like a mother to me. She set my husband and I up on our first blind date. Haven't seen her in 20 years. It was really a wonderful thing to see her.
Could it be that my luck is changing??

Cassie girl, sorry you're luck has been rotten today. I felt that way myself yesterday. My mom always said that bad days are necessary in life so you can truly appreciate the good ones. So hang it up for the day, look forward to your weekend and hope that tomorrow is a new day and not just an extension of yesterday's rotten streak. Cyber hug to you honey.

Amy, I sure wish broken cookies had fewer calories too! I could not keep Nutella in my house by the way. I really will just spoon it out of the jar and into my mouth until it is all gone. I don't know what they put in it, maybe crack cocaine, but I am powerless to Nutella... and when I did an internship in Paris back... well a while ago... I literally had a Nutella crepe once a day and gained 10 pounds purely from Nutella crepes. Oh Nutella, I can't quit you.

My day got a bit better, thanks, y'all. But I'm putting up an accountability post...remember the free dessert from lunch....just eating that little bit of it has had me craving sweets all night long. I need to post before bed and let you all know if I gave in.
We did plan the weekend...we're hiking the falls and then stopping at an amazing apple orchard...willpower will be a must. We've got a joint b-day celebration dinner for my son and I at a Japanese place this weekend also.
Now I just need to get through the week

I'd love to hear more about your grandfather. There are so many incredible stories from that period of time. I'm currently reading a book entitled The Diary of Petr Ginz 1941-1942. It is the diary of a 14 year old boy living in Prague in the early '40's, translated from Czech to English. (I know, boring reading to most.) He was eventually killed in a gas chamber in Auschwitz at 16.
My grandmother came to the US from the German/Polish border shortly before WWII broke out as well, so it's really fascinating to me. Add to that the fact that my mom was an American History major, and well, you get the idea.
I kind of grew up with a lot of first hand accounts.
As far as what he brought back... well, many of the things were gifts to female family members (his mother, sister, etc.) as souvenirs. Things like crystal, jewelry, artwork, photos, war trinkets, etc. After my dad passed away and as these family members passed away through the years, the items were, one by one, returned to me. My personal favorite is a huge, beautiful water jug that he, somehow, carried with him all the way home from Greece in the '40's. He volunteered to bring horses, by ship, from the US to Greece- for what reason I don't know. I should find out. lol

It's so precious that you have so many trinkets that your father collected throughout the war. The water jug sounds amazing! You must treasure those items so much.
Both my grandfathers fought for the Italian Army. My mother's father was from Northern Italy and he was on front line for his entire 6-year deployment. He got some medals which we found in a little suitcase after he died. He didn't talk very much about his experience but he did end up a prisoner of war at one point and somehow escaped. He and his buddy got on a freight train but when the train stopped and the doors opened they were greeted by armed Nazi's. My grandfather was convinced that was the end for him. After much discussion in German, they let my grandfather and his friend go. One of them spoke some Italian and told my grandfather to ditch the uniforms somehow. So off they went, on foot, from Austria, walked through the Italian Alps to get home. They traded their uniforms in for some old clothes at a farm they passed along they way. The walk took 2 months or so and when my grandfather did make it home, he had to hide in a grain silo for a while until he joined the partisans. Meanwhile my grandmother back home at the dairy farm, had her house occupied by Nazi's for 4 months. They moved in and took over their farmhouse. My grandmother was forced to cook and clean for them at gunpoint. She was only 21 years old. It's hard to imagine how difficult and challenging life was back then, especially during war times.

Rose! You are on fire girl, two times to the gym and now you up again! Your pictures were lovely and looks like you got good Amsterdam weather.
April, I do feel the calf raises today. I admire you for handling heels, I can only imagine how much worse it is with them. AND you did two sets! I only managed one, it was hurting too much as I did them.
Quinn, glad your luck has turned! It was funny to read you donut post after Almeeker's!
Terri, sounds like you really enjoyed your hairdressing experience! Enjoy being blond and hope your allergies clear up soon.
Mike, those calf raises are killers and surprinsingly the pain only increases as time goes by. But so far its still the good kind of pain, I will need to do them tomorrow again.
Almeeker, your parents are so sweet to try to help your daughter feel better in her kindergarten, hope she has a great time tomorrow and adjusts to her new classroom soon.
Cassie, glad your day ended better and that you have planned out your weekend.
Darlene, you have a deficit with Thanksgiving dinner, you did well! Now get to those tomatoes.
Lizzie, good going on your calories, hope you manage some exercise tomorrow (Hope I manage some exercise tomorrow)
Hope, feel better soon! Good to hear you and your daughter are getting along better.

Amy I wish I was invited to your farm day oh and I would also like to be a fly on the wall for your convo with the teacher, I have odds on you.
Thanks for the tomato advice I am going to leave the skins on then, we like chunky sauce even when I start with canned tomatoes I chop up fresh ones and add them.
Quinn Wow it’s funny how donuts seem to be getting so many different emotional reactions today glad they saved you some money. Hope this is the beginning of a money saving period for you.
Cassie Nice job on resisting bad snacks.
Rose Thanks for sharing your Grandparents story you are so right about how difficult our grandparent’s lives were at such a young age. It’s sad that wars are still being fought today and young men and women still have to experience it on a daily basis.
