30 Pound Club?
Hello, I'm new to these forums and I'm enjoying it a lot! While looking around, I see a lot of 5-15, 100+, etc., but I didn't know how we start a thread for 30 pounds or a range from 25-50 pounds. I like the idea of having the weekly weigh-ins a lot.
Any advice? |
Hey Runner!
I saw your post in the Exercize section. 30 lbs is (was) my goal. I am about half way there now. I am on a medically supervised diet which has worked very well for me. 1200 cals - which is somewhere around 2 lbs per week for my activity load. But last week's weigh in was a bit of a bummer as I had only lost 2 lb in 2 weeks, but hey it's better that gaining 2 lbs. All the posts and threads warn me that it will get tougher the closer I get to the goal, so I am prepared, but hoping that I might be the exception  What's you motivation? |
We could make this just such a thread!
I started at 182, am now 164, and want to end up 135-140 or a comfortable size 8. I am 5'5, 36 years old. I used to be a size 6 back in the day but I don't want to be that thin again. For one, it was hard to find clothes that fit-at my height, anything that fit in the waist was too short in the legs/sleeves. And I have to face facts, I'm not as young as I used to be :p Short term, my goal is 150 with some muscle tone before warm weather hits so I can wear sundresses again. |
Hi Lizzy,
I started out at 169. My immediate goal is 139, from there we'll see... It depends a little on %fat. I'd like to get in the 20 - 25% range, which I suspect will be more like 130lbs. But since I haven't weighed that little since I was in high school, it is a little hard to imagine for this 52 year old. I am 5'4" and have always been active. Once I decided to lose the weight the exercize program wasn't much of an issue, it was mostly adjusting my eating. And I have to say the FitDay has been a god-sent. I have tried journaling in notebooks off and on for years, but it never really helped or stuck. However, with FitDay, being such a data-geek, it has been pretty fun to log in my daily consumption and then look at all the graphs, and charts. I am increasingly using it to plan meals too. Some one else noted that they plan their whole day ahead of time using FitDay, which I thought was a pretty cleaver idea. It's been a long time since I have been comfortable in a sundress - I think I might borrow your motivator - that's a great idea! |
Hi
Just read the posts in this thread and it was if I had written them myself I can so identify, I am almost 35yo 5'5 and am currently at 166 having started at about 185 my final goal is 138 cant remember the last time I weighed this maybe highschool, In anycase am loving fitday it really keeps me honest, my motivation is to get to my goal in my 35th year would love to have done so by my birthday but as it is in about 3 weeks am not gonna achieve it so will aim for June. I usually weigh in on Sundays which I guess is Saturday for you guys being that I am in australia, anyway would really love to keep up with how everyone is doin through this thread. We can all motivate each other :D Kayla |
I would like to join in as well. I am 52, almost 53, 5'5". Currently at 166 and my goal is 130 - 135. I always felt good about myself at that weight. My weigh-in is on Monday, but since I have done horrible this week, may not see a loss. Will let you know. This can become our WW meetings. lol
|
BTW - my name is Trish and I live in Westfield, IN about 20 minutes north of Indianapolis.
|
Weighed in today at 163-19 lbs lost and will be what I weighed before my son in 3 more pounds! WOOHOOO!!! That just leaves the 25 lbs from my firstborn to go :p. I'm hoping this epic snowfall won't keep me from the gym tomorrow, I finally made it back last Wednesday afternoon. But if it does, the backup plan is to do Pilates at home tomorrow, cardio at the gym Sunday. Can't do the weights Sunday because I plan to do them Monday. Home workouts just aren't as good, but it's better than nothing. I just want to make it to the gym 3 times this week like I'm supposed to.

Fear of scales
Hi all,
Congrats Lizzy! It looks like we are all aiming for somewhere in the 130's. Trish and Kayjay great to read your stories! I usually weigh in every-other week at the Dr's office. He uses % fat as the more important measure rather than just weight - which is great. It also spews out a lot of other data like %water, BMI, basal metabolism and other stuff, which fuels the data-geek in me. I have a long standing fear of scales :D. But I finally faced up to the fear this week and bought an impedence scale (one of the fancy ones that will calculate %fat, etc). It should arrive some time next week I'll let you know how long it sits in the box before I actually use it! |
Hi I would like to join this club too. I am 61 years old, 5 7 1/2, weight 170. This is the most I have ever weighed and I am fed up. I joined ww when I was forty and got down to 126... lost 20 pounds. But I swear each decade I gain. I know I can't be in the 120 where I stayed till I hit my forties... I think 140 will be good and maybe go a little lower. I just need to get my control back. I started on this site two days ago. Leaning more towards exercise and high fiber foods like fruits and veggies. So far I have lost two pounds. I am a life time member with ww but it just doesn't work for me any more. So I think this is my new start. I will post my progress each Wednesday. Good luck to everyone. I know we can do this, we are women!!
|
I'd like to join all you fabulous ladies if thats ok. My name is Hillarie I am 32. My starting weight was 212.8 pounds and my goal is ultimately 145-150 but for now it's set at 160. I am currently 202.2! I have developed a bit of OCD when it comes to logging my food and sticking to plan I'm afraid, but it's working so I'm gonna keep on keepin on. I want to get back to 157 by July 31st if possible. I got down to that weight in June 05, before getting pregnant with my daughter and I was so happy to be thin again. But due to pregnancy complications and bedrest I shot back up to 218 by delivery and that's where I've been since having her 3 years ago. My weight has been stuck. No budging it no matter how hard I tried. My mother passed away suddenly in december 08 and since then I've been trying to get my life turned back aound to be healthy and here for my family for the long haul. Finally on her birthday this year I jumped in with both feet and have lost 10.6 pounds in 9 days. There's no looking back now! Today we celebrated my sons 6th birthday, which was actually yesterday, so of course we had to have cake and ice cream. None for me thank you. I thought it would be harder then it was but I know what my calorie allotment is and that didn't fit in unless I didn't eat the rest of the day and I knew that could only spell disaster. I'm holding strong! Sorry to ramble. Glad to be here!
|
Welcome Trish, Monterey and Hillarie goodluck with your weight loss journeys I know that we can all achieve our goals
Congratulations Lizzy on this weeks loss, hope that the snow disappears for you soon so that you can definately get to the gym and loss those 3lbs to get to prepregnancy weight. Runbikeski am totally hearing you on your fear of the scales I have a love hate relationship with mine, my scales also monitor body fat, metabolic rate etc and I do also use this function to gauge how I am doing with the new body as well as using the old fashioned measuring to see inches lost. In any case they were quite nice to me this week and showed a 2.9lb loss which brings me to 165lb and a total loss of 19.4lb lost since new year.(Was quite suprised by this as I have been ill all week and have done almost no exercise) Wishing you all a good week and I hope the scales or whatever measure you use to gauge sucess are kind to you. Kayla :) |
Glad you're feeling better kayjay... also nice you lost weight. :)
|
Great Job!
Great job everyone! I'm so excited that we've got this 30 pound weight loss club going.
I didn't post my stats, so I'll do it now. I'm 5'7" and am at 157. I am a runner and got injured this past winter and haven't been able to run. Unfortunately, I've been eating like I've still been running :(. This needs to change! My goal is 125 and my calories will be at 1,200. When I resume running, I'll increase my calories a bit so that I have the energy to get through the runs. I have also started P90X...that's a butt kicker! I have discovered something about myself over the last few weeks. For one, my ankle injury that led to a blood clot in my calf bummed me out. Then I had some personal things take place and then last Thursday our dog died. Talk about stress! What I discovered was that I'm an emotional eater. I never really knew that about myself, so I guess the good is that I realized it and know I have to change that. Anyway, congrats to everyone on their weight loss and I look forward to this journey with all of you!! |
I weighed in today and I have lost 2 pounds. So I'm at 168. I'm feeling confident and more in control. Really being mindful of what I eat and exercising.
I'll post my weight next Tuesday. Good luck everyone. :) |
how have you lost the 20 pounds so far? (and congrats on that!)
|
I started working on getting healthier a few weeks ago...just sick of thinking about it and not doing anything different. I always blame being busy or being on the road for not eating right and being more active and finally am sick of my own excuses and want to actually BE healthier. I Like having a forum to talk with others about trying to get there.......
Anyway, I read an article (by debra moore I think) about how she lost 25 pounds in a month and what stood out to me finally was this simple thing - it's calories eaten versus calories burned. I know it sounds simple and I've always known that I guess, but I never understood or accepted it in the sense that if you eat more than the amount of calories your body needs to maintain a healthy weight, you gain. I love breads and cheese and would tell myself "but its whole wheat, so it's ok" and I don't think I ever had a clue how many calories my body actually needs to be the weight I want ...her site linked to a calculator on the American Cancer Society website and I finally learned how many calories I need to eat (or not eat) and so far, its bee going pretty good. I've lost about 8 pounds..... I wish I'd understood that concept of calories in versus calories out a long time ago and I hope I can stick to this committement to get healthy. |
For me the biggest thing is getting the exercise in. If I don't make myself get up and move, I just feel "blah" and can't get myself to care about the food. I think if I don't move I just feel drained, so I crave sugar because I need energy, but of course sugar energy doesn't last. No magic pills here, just diet and exercise. Things I've "known" for years but I haven't been practicing what I preach until recently. Logging your food, and being HONEST about it, makes a big difference too. I need that accountability, if it's written down it's more real somehow. I used to not log that one extra cookie at bedtime, or the potato chips left on my child's plate, lying to myself it didn't really matter, but the truth is it does. A few bites here and there add up to a LOT. I do allow myself an afternoon snack, something high in protein, so I'm not starving at dinnertime. That helps a lot too. I'd rather lose weight slower than be constantly hungry, because after a few days I can't take that anymore and I pig out.

Speaking of energy, do you eat 3 meals and 2 snacks or 3 meals and 1 snack? I started The Zone and signed up on FormulaZone. It's all about controling insulin and remaining satiated. Although I don't follow the block method hardcore, I do try to get my meals to around the 40% carbs, 30% protien, and 30% fat. I love loading my foods into FitDay because I can see how many calories I'm eating and if I'm on target for the 40%, 30%, 30%. I noticed that when I started following this method of eating that my energy levels increased and I wasn't hungry. I did try the 3 meals and 2 snacks, but I changed it to 3 meals and 1 afternoon snack, usually a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, half an apple and 6 peanuts. It's kind of fun mixing and matching the different foods. Good to have you here! |
my first day on here but I also have 30 lbs that need to come off.....I started at the gym the first of Feb and have been working out really hard 5 times a week, two of them with a personal trainer and have yet to shed a pound....what the heck am I doing wrong? Very discouraged this morning
|
Runnerchi-I'm supposed to be doing 3 meals and 3 snacks, but I usually do 3 meals 2 snacks so I can have a little more at dinner. OK I confess, it's because the rest of the family has Oreos or pudding pops after dinner, so I want them too. :p Snack is usually a protein shake or a piece of fruit, maybe with a few nuts or some string cheese. I'm aiming for 40/30/30 carbs/protein/fat as well, but it's usually closer to 50/20/30. I think I need more dairy, but it's hard working that in without busting the calorie budget, especially since I hate no-fat diet dairy products lol.
Ooh-one thing I have stumbled on recently is upping the protein with seafood. Those little packages of imitation crab are loaded with protein, and all I have to do is open the package. Also frozen shrimp, they thaw out in cold running water really quickly. And tuna pouches. |
Hi girls!
It looks like everyone's doing well. It is great to read the stories and struggle, triumphs and tribulations. I just got back from a 3-day cross country ski trip in the Lake Tahoe area. Lordy, X-C skiing uses some muscles! I tried very hard not to over eat to match the calories burned and for the most part I was successful (I did enjoy a beer every night - not normally part of the current diet). I was also fortunate that both my DH and the couple we were skiing with were very considerate of my diet restrictions. We'll see on Friday when I check in with the Dr. how well I actually did! Welcome Sdrew72595, hey don't get too discouraged! There is not doubt that you are building muscle with all of those work outs, so it is likely you are masking the fat loss. One thing you might think about, if you haven't done so already, is to add a big aerobic component to your workouts. Does you gym have step classes or kick boxing or something along those lines? Most exercize experts suggest that to really burn the fat, you should do some pretty vigorous activity for 30 or more minutes. Circuit training can work that way, but I am a slug in the gym, so I can never really keep the pace up. |
Hi guys for me losing weight really has been about being accountable for everything that I put into my mouth using the food diary has kept me honest I log everything and then there is no hiding when I cheat.
I have also slowly increased my exercise from about an hour once a week to about 45mins 5 times a week these things combined with being in the right head space has allowed me to lose the weight so far. So much of this journey is psychological once you believe that you can do it you will. I always knew that calories in had to be less then calories out but for so long I ate for comfort or out of boredom or just because I deserved to eat something nice. But I got to the stage where the scales kept going up and I hated what I saw in the mirror, those things combined with my mother not believing I could do it when I said after new year I was gonna loss weight have spurred me on Anyway this is just what has worked for me in losing weight so far, I still have a long way to go and like everyone I struggle with willpower sometimes but I hope that by logging on to here and sharing my story that I can stay motivated and also help to support and motivate others. Goodluck all with your weight loss journeys I look forward to hearing about your progress over the next couple of months.:) |
Sdrew72595 keeping going I am sure you will see a result on the scales soon.
In the meantime remember that the scales is only way of monitoring your sucess just because this hasnt moved doesnt mean that you havent lost inches so why not measure yourself you may be amazed by how much these figures change even when the scale doesnt. Also make sure that you havent dropped your calorie intake to low you need some calories to fuel the amount of exercising you are doing if you drop this too low then body will go into starvation mode and hang on to everything you eat. Hope this helps, stick with it you can do it. :) |
Hi guys,
Mind if I join you? Im Rachel, 5'5", weighed in today at 186. My goal is 155. Im 30! |
Welcome Rachel :D
Congratulations on starting your weight loss journey. Will look forward to hearing how you get on over the next couple of months. Kayla |
Thanks Kayla!
I went and saw a nutritionist today for the first time. She suggested I log all my food in a journal, and I found this site. It's actually addicting! I must say, Im excited about loosing weight again! Two years ago I was 248lbs, and a few months ago, I was down to 168. Ive got back up to 186, and I dont like it! So here I am today! Im excited to hear about your journeys, and what we can all learn from eachother. Rach |
Welcome!
Welcome Rachel, we're happy you're here! I hear you about these boards being addicting...I also agree with you about being excited about losing weight. I, too, am excited! It's great knowing other people that are in this journey together. I'm excited to watch everyone's progress over time. Have a happy Friday!
KayJay - I completely get your sentence about eating for comfort or because you wanted something nice. Then I read your next sentence about not liking what you saw in the mirror and having someone doubt your ability to do it. That's me too! I realized I was a comfort food eater, or ate because I was bored. I've had a few people tell me, "just face it, it runs in your family", "you get it from your mother's side", "you're just big boned", etc. Well, I've never seen a fat skeleton! Being a competitive person (why I love marathoning), that just fueled me to make it happen. Great having you here, KayJay! |
bi-weekly weigh-in
Yippee! 4.5 lbs in 2 weeks! Good old FitDay - it really keeps me on track (and agree with Rachel... it is addicting).
I guess I will have to unpack that new scale now, seeing my own weight isn't quite so depressing any more. I hope everyone has a fun weekend - it is supposed to rain here. BTW, the name's Pam and I live in southern California. |
Pam-Congrats on the loss! Im in Orange County, and it rained at my house all weekend.
How was everyones weekend? |
Congratulations Pam on the great loss.
I have stayed the same this week, :o only have myself to blame, head has not been in the game and have given in to temptation on a number of occassions, but am getting back up dusting myself off and going for it again after all today is a new day fresh with no mistakes in it. I really want to lose another 15lbs by 4/15/10 as have my best friends wedding on that day and want to look good in a cocktail dress. So that is my next goal. Hope everyone else is going well and look forward to hearing about some more amazing losses soon |
Old and New
Hi,
I am new to this Discussion Board but I have used FitDay before to track my food intake. I was very loath to start but now I remember it isn't so bad and kinda fun! I just joined a gym with my husband (18 month membership) and started with a personal trainer. Thought I would run the Pittsburgh Marathon but I haven't done much running since Snowmaggedon hit and I don't want to hurt myself. Thinking about the half-marathon or just walking the whole thing. Would like to have a support group for the 30lbs I have in mind. At 156 and feel my best weight has been 135 or lower. I'm 47 so the pounds are just creeping on! |
Welcome!

I weighed in today. I lost two pounds. I had gained a pound at the beginning of this week but lost it and one more. I had not exercised for five days. Took care of my parents for a few days. Dad had a mild heart attack. So, it just shows me that exercise really does work. I need to keep my metabolism level up and burning calories. I'm happy with my progress. I've lost five pounds all together in two weeks. It's nice seeing the scale numbers going down instead of up.:D
|
Hey all!
Monterey, great job! All you east coasters, is the weather improving enough to get outdoors to exercise? I really admire the devotion of you folks who can commit to treadmills when the weather is inclement. I am pretty sure that I would just turn to a couch potato during the winter (unless I could get to enough snow to X-C ski) guess I am spoiled in Southern California (even though I grew up in N. VA) weather is almost never an issue, so I almost never have that excuse for not getting a run in. Although I can come up with lots of other excuses ;) Good luck on the rehab for the ankle Runner, I look forward to seeing your progress. 7sisters, I here you regarding the pounds post 35yr Pam |
Hello
Is a good idea I too would love to join, I just started today I am 190 lbs, my goal weight is 160, is there any advice as how to start on what to eat each day. Thanks, Lets get those stubborn lbs off |
Runnerchi, thanks for the welcome. I'm so sorry to hear of your injury. Sounds like you have your road to recovery mapped out. My left ankle has a tendon that actually pops over my ankle bone when I turn it certain ways ... a leftover from a sprain as a teenager, but it doesn't hurt much. I fractured my foot training for the Pgh Marathon in 2002 and it was a total bummer. I ended up running about 6.5 miles with friends to the finish line which was much more than I ever expected since I didn't train at all beforehand. Started running cross country in high school (1979/80). Have only run in 10Ks races to completion in 2009 and 1997. Otherwise, I've just run for fun and health.
heatherheights, Good Luck with everything! I just lost 1.5 lbs in the past 5 days and I know it's because I am exercising regularly and tracking my food on FitDay. Since I haven't faithfully tracked for a while, it is hard to believe how fast the calories add up! Absolutely Shocking! I really like looking at the calories burned vs. calories eaten graph. As long as eaten is adequately below burned, I will lose. Simple on the math. Difficult on the mind. I just read some advice on percentages of food to eat each day + fiber intake: Carbs 45-65%; Protein 10-35%; Fat 25-35%; Fiber 21-25 grams. Hope that helps! |
Weigh to Go Monterey! Loss is definitely better than gain in this club! Slow and steady wins the race. I hope your dad recovers fully and uses this to start a new lease on life. He is very lucky to both survive his heart attack and have family, like you, who care and can pitch in to help.
Pam, I appreciate commiseration! I have to really work hard to put my weight and health as a top priority. Between a certain comfort with married life, work, family, etc., it's hard to conjure up that burning desire I had as a young person to be and do it all. I have to talk myself practically into everything now! Good to have compatriots online to share the struggle with! |
Hello
I would like to join in too if its ok. I'm 45 years old and weigh 180. My goal is 145. I quit smoking in July and promptly put on 40 pounds. I could use all of the advice, support, pushing, etc... I can get! Having kids and a husband that seem to be able to eat anything doesn't help. You guys seems to be a pretty inspiring group! I excited!
|
Thanks for your support 7sisters and rbs... yesterday after the weigh in I didn't exercise. Need to do it at least five days a week. I just finished exercising. I must admit I feel better and have more energy.
Good luck to all the new people joining. Keep track of food and exercise. Each week try to push the exercise a little harder. Don't let the scale depress you. Sometimes there is water gain to the muscles in the beginning. If you are watching your food and exercise just keep doing it and you will see the weight drop. Just give it a few weeks and it will. |
