4 Reasons Why Wine Antioxidants Increase Your Lifespan

Aug 17, 2010

If you like to drink wine, you'll enjoy it even more after learning about the health benefits of wine antioxidants. Medical research has proven that moderate consumption of wine can increase your lifespan. Many of the health benefits from drinking one glass of wine per day, including a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, are believed to be from the alcohol in wine.

Andioxidants Found in Wine

The other health benefits from drinking wine have been proven to be from poly-phenolic flavonoids, which are better known as antioxidants. These antioxidants are found in grapes that are used in wine. More antioxidants exist in red wines than in white wines because grape skins, which are rich in antioxidants, are included in fermentation in red wines. The antioxidants that are most active in wine are resveratrol, quercetin, and the catechins.

These antioxidants neutralize harmful free radicals in your body, which can cause certain types of cancer, heart disease, stroke, immune dysfunction, and degenerative disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Harmful free radicals are everywhere in our environment, but mostly caused by exposure to pollution, chemicals, radiation, pesticides, alcohol, unhealthy food, and even sunshine.

Following are reasons why antioxidants in one glass of red wine per day can increase your lifespan:

1. Wine Antioxidants Can Reduce Your Risk of Heart Attacks and Strokes

By relaxing the blood vessels and inhibiting the oxidation of unhealthy cholesterol, the antioxidants in wine and grape juice can help reduce your risk of heart attacks and strokes.

2. Wine Antioxidants May Help Prevent and Treat Cancer

The antioxidants in wine have been proven to help prevent certain types of cancer. The antioxidant resveratrol is being studied as a treatment for cancer patients that makes their chemotherapy and radiation treatments more effective. When used in combination with radiation, resveratrol can help kill cancerous cells. Rservatrol is also being studied as a treatment for pancreatic cancer patients. It is suspected that rservatrol may reduce pancreatic cancer's resistance to chemotherapy.

3. Wine Antioxidants Can Improve Brain Function

Antioxidants in wine, when consumed in moderation, are also associated with improved brain and muscle function. This can help lower your risk of developing degenerative diseases of the brain, such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease, as you age.

4. Wine Antioxidants Can Help to Keep All of Your Body's Cells Healthy

Healthy cells will make you look and feel youthful, while they decrease the effects of aging and increase your lifespan.

With such important health benefits, there are excellent reasons to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner. However, it is important that wine connoisseurs moderate their alcohol consumption. Drinking more than one or two glasses per day can cause serious health problems that will outweigh the benefits of the antioxidants in wine. Limiting alcohol to one glass per day is recommended for optimal health benefits.
