Do you want to know how to eat healthy during a road trip? When you think about food on the road, you probably think about greasy fast food, microwaved meals, bags of potato chips and cans of sugary soda. If you are going on a road trip in the near future, here are some tips to help you make healthy eating choices while you travel.

1. Start the Day With a Healthy Breakfast

If you're traveling by car, then you probably want to hit the road early so as to get to your destination on time. This means that you will probably have to eat your breakfast on the road. Unfortunately, most of the breakfast items that you will see in fast foods are packed with fats and calories and are also lacking in real nutrients.

A choice would be parfaits with yogurt and fruit. For beverages, low-fat milk and natural fruit juice are better choices than soft drinks, sodas or energy drinks. If you will be eating breakfast at a service station, you can opt for breakfast cereals with whole grains and low-fat milk or protein bars.

2. Stock up on Healthy Snacks

No road trip would be complete without snacks to munch on. If you want to eat healthy on your road trip, then you're going to have to pack healthier snacks. Instead of packaged fatty snacks, put slices of vegetables and fruits in sealed containers and store them in a cooler to keep them fresh. Sandwiches are also the quintessential road trip snack. Make healthier sandwiches by using whole grain bread and lean meats like chicken and turkey.

A bag of nuts also make a tasty and filling snack when you're on the road. Cashews, almonds and walnuts are rich in healthy fats and can certainly be filling. If potato chips are your favorite car trip snack, at least opt for a relatively healthier version by choosing baked potato chips. Although still not very nutritious, baked potato chips contain a significantly lesser amount of fat.

3. Choose Nutritious Meals When Dining Out

If you are going on a road trip then chances are you will eat lunch and dinner by stopping at restaurants or fast foods. If you're eating in a restaurant, try to order some fresh salad or a bowl of soup along with your main dish. This will help fill you up faster. In fact, you may even find yourself satisfied with just salad and soup for a meal. You should also choose dishes that have been prepared with healthier cooking methods. For instance, broiled chicken is a healthier choice than fried chicken.

If you will be dining in a fast food joint, try to look for a sandwich shop where you can build your own sandwich. This will allow you to control what ingredients go into your meal. When selecting burgers or sandwiches, go for grilled meat instead of fried. When choosing a side dish, opt for healthier items like a salad with low-fat dressing or a baked potato instead of the usual greasy fries or onion rings.
