Many nutritionists believe that weight gain in the face is the result of water retention, rather than body fat on the facial area. Refined sugar and salt in your diet contribute to water retention, and can make your face look fatter. Lose weight from your face by cutting salt and refined sugars out of your diet. Eat a low-salt, low-fat diet rich in lean meats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Drink Plenty of Water

If you're not drinking enough water, you're more likely to retain water. That's because your body may believe that there isn't enough water available to meet your fluid needs, so it desperately stores excess water to stave off dehydration. Most of this retained water stays in your face, making your cheeks and eyes look puffy and fat. Drink at least 64 ounces of water per day to prevent water retention due to dehydration.

Many medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, can contribute to facial water retention. If you're trying to lose weight from your face, reduce or eliminate your use of over-the-counter drugs, which can contribute to facial water retention. If you're taking prescription drugs, talk to your doctor about prescription options that won't cause water retention and facial puffiness. Of course, you should keep taking any drugs your doctor feels are necessary, even if they do cause water retention.

Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol is another common culprit when it comes to facial weight gain. Alcohol contributes to dehydration, and therefore to water retention and facial puffiness. Alcohol also contains lots of empty calories, mostly from sugar, so if you're trying to lose weight from your face, or from the rest of your body, drinking alcohol is a no-no.

Strength training exercises help you lose weight and keep it off. They can even strengthen and tone your facial muscles, even without engaging them directly.
