How to Build a Home Gym on a Budget

Treadmills, weight benches, and kettlebells ... oh my! Maybe if you have a few thousand dollars to spend.

Exercising at home is nothing new. There are countless exercises and workouts you can do with little more than your own body. But, after a while, you need a change. And maybe a gym membership is just not feasible for you. That's okay! You can add a few pieces of equipment that won't make your credit card scream, and completely change your home workouts.

Bands, bands, bands

Head to your local Target, Walmart, sporting goods store or even pull up Amazon to find a variety of choices. Choose a set that includes different handle attachments. This way you can hold on with your hands, or attach to your legs. There should be at least three or more different bands as well. This way you can choose the proper resistance for different exercises. Door attachments are also sometimes included. This way you don't have to wrap the band around something heavy and wear away finish.

A Good Mat

A mat can be used for anything you do on the floor: core work, stretching, yoga, Pilates and even exercises with your bands. They provide a non-skid surface that gives you a little more security than standing on carpet or tile. They come in a variety of lengths, widths and thickness levels. Some are as little as $10, while others are $100 or more. Depending on what surface you exercise on, you may want a thicker mat. Just choose what is comfortable for you.

Jump Rope Isn't Just for Kids

A treadmill, elliptical or bike are all great choices for the home—if you have the room and the money to spend. Cardio is an important part of any workout plan. But if you have some stairs in your house and a jump rope, you have options. If you don't have high ceilings, just step outside to use the rope. Weather bad? Lay the rope down and jump side to side, or front and back over it. Your heart rate will climb, that's for sure.

Some Other Choices

If you have a little more to spend, and the room to store it consider adding an adjustable step or bench. You can use it for cardio and weight training to add variety. Again, some are really expensive, but there are very affordable options. It just depends on your budget. Do your research, and consider what you want to use it for before making a purchase.

A set of adjustable dumbbells is also a great choice for home gyms. You can find some at your local stores for under $50 that go up to approximately 15-20 pounds. Heavier sets can cost more, so it depends on your fitness level, and of course your bank account.
