HIIT List: How to Build a Playlist for an Awesome Workout

Stop wasting time scrolling through your playlist, and get your workout going strong!

Wow, how the times have changed. You no longer have to cart around bulky cassette or CD players that required you to buy an annoying holder that you shifted constantly out of your way. You don't have to spend ages making a mix tape or CD, or just listen to a single artist. Thank goodness! Now, there are wireless headphones that are so efficient and weightless that you forget you have them on, and you can access hundreds to thousands of songs with just your phone or small device.

So, now there's a new problem—scrolling! You may be wasting time skipping songs instead of breaking a sweat. Well, build yourself some new playlists, and get a great HIIT workout.

HIIT, Tabata, Whatever You Want

High-intensity interval training, tabata workouts, circuits, etc. all require you to keep moving so that you maximize your workouts. It may be a combination of cardio and strength exercises or focus on just one type of training. Either way, you have to move. There is no time to skip around with your music. It needs to keep you motivated so you are pushing yourself and can see results.

Start With Your Favorites

Chances are your iPod, phone, or whatever device you use has at least 10-15 songs that you can't get enough of hearing. You can sing every word, and often do at the top of your lungs. While you may not want to do that at the gym, these songs can form your first playlist. Only add the songs that are upbeat, even though some of your favorites may be slow. You want to keep your heart rate up, not start winding down. You can create a separate playlist for stretching or cooldowns that include those slower songs. There you go—one playlist done!

You Can't Have Just One

Don't stop there. Even though you love those songs, you need variety in life and workout music. Pandora, Google Music, Amazon, and so many others allow you to pay a fee and get access to tons of music. They also let you pick genres, decades, top hits or search by artist. So, if you like classic rock, they have a playlist for you to stream or download. Prefer current Top 40 or hip hop? There's a few for those too. Playlists or streaming, you can play your choice for the day and get a great workout. Once you start listening, they also make recommendations. These can lead to new playlists or songs to add to current lists. Create at least four or five different playlists. Rotate them so that you can stay motivated, and enjoy your HIIT!
