7 day motivational thread (new year, new week, new you!)

Who's in for another week of ass kicking and goal killing? I know all my regular girls are in, welcome to all the new ones!

Post up your goals for the week, update daily and be prepared to be motivated!:D

To the new girls, I'm the only guy here but feel free to talk as if there are no guys here. The girls here consider me one of their own and won't let me leave. ;)

cjohnson728 01-01-2012 03:00 AM

...and Mike lives in a houseful of girls, even the pets, making him an honorary member and able to contribute wisely on topics ranging from fashion to jewelry to sanitary products; he provides a very valuable guy's perspective when called up as well!

Happy New Year to one and all! Hope you all enjoyed last night either peacefully or in revelry, whichever you chose.

Yesterday I set some goals for the weekend, so I'll do another day of those, then revise for tomorrow and the rest of the week:

1. No sugar
2. 1200 calories max
3. Exercise twice (one down Saturday)
4. 3 sports bottles water
5. 25g fiber
6. 4-5 fruits and veggies
7. Check in daily

Mern 01-01-2012 03:01 AM

Wishing all of you a very happy new year.

Adding my welcome to new members. :)

Well, half of my whoosh overnight yesterday stuck and I'm totally thrilled to be down to an official beginning weight this year of 216.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." So I'm going with my same goals that got me down to 216:

Calorie limit 1600
Carbs less fiber 25g
Average daily fiber 25g
Average daily cholesterol 300mg
Average daily sat fat 12%
Fruits/veggies 5 servings per day

Water 48 oz.
Artificial sweetener limit 2 pks. per day
Sugar free dark chocolate miniatures limit 2 per day
Vitamin D and fish oil capsules daily

Stolen idea ;) Each day name something wonderful that happened or a complaint/inconvenience that reminded me of a blessing to be counted

Oops, it's not a new week. Why did I think today is Monday? I'll sticky the old thread back up. Do y'all want me to leave this and we can get back on schedule next Monday or delete and start fresh tomorrow. Let me know.

Doesn't matter to me...I have new goals starting Monday anyway, so whichever...

Some folks might start today with the New Year, some might start tomorrow being Monday; some might wait till Tuesday because of the holiday celebrated on Monday by some places of employment. Maybe a "Jump in whenever you're ready" thread?

I thought that being the newbie here I misunderstood the time frame. I'll be back after awhile with this week's goals -- for starting 1/2/'12. I like having this thread up on the early side. http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/talk/t1107.gif

Jump in whenever your ready sounds good.

Off Topic... Quinn, FWI coach Peyton is putting in the starters this week. ;) Did you hear about ATL's coach crying about the Saints running up the score? Really? This isn't little league, the pros should have to take a knee b/c the losing team can't keep up. Thoughts on this?

Mern 01-01-2012 04:09 AM

Mike, I didn't catch that the new thread was a day early, either. But I'm really glad you started it because I'm restarting today anyway. I'm happy to be able to use this one for eight days--one day jumpstart. :D

fit4luv, I love your animated smilies. LOL

Mern 01-01-2012 04:13 AM

Mike--2 servings of "break"--typo for bread? When is the half marathon in NO? I won't be there-- just want to know so we can root you on.

Glad you posted your goals because I have to go back and edit in my fish oil and vitamin D. Knew I forgot something.

That's for catching my typo. The 1/2 is March 4th.

I'm in but I've got some issues going on here, so I'll have to figure out my goals in the morning (maybe tonight). We had a storm come through during the night which started with freezing rain, then snow, then 40 mph winds. It knocked out our power (no laptop ) and our heat, which is not fun when it's 23 degrees! I have a fireplace, so it wasn't a big issue for me, but may have to drive over in this storm to bring my mom over to stay warm. Our power is back on, obviously, but it's spotty and the lights flicker with the high winds.

Haven't had a chance to read the last of the old thread yet... hope you all had a safe and wonderful night last night!

Mike,
I saw that! What's worse is that they aren't starting Rodgers today to save him, which would be ok except if they lose, I'm going to be in trouble with my picks! They aren't playing Mathews, either... Stupid coach. I'm in first place among a field of men and I'm in line to have a very nice profit for the season. It's a woman thing... I have to win! They all pat me on the head and treat me like I don't know anything about football... that I must get my picks from a man... Drives me insane!

The Atlanta coach needs to pull up his big girl panties and quit complaining... if he didn't like the score, his team should have played better ball! ;)

Have to run... the game is on. If I lose my power during the game, you'll hear me scream all the way down in NO!

Mom8TN 01-01-2012 05:14 AM

Hi Everyone!
I'm new to Fit Day, I figured that Jan 1st would be a perfect day to make some changes. I have the following goals for the week:
1) no junk food
2) no overeating
3) make healthier choices
4) take care of my body
5) exercise at least 3 times this week
6) no cheating

If I can meet those goals this week that will be a super good start to this new year.

Thanks!
Mom8TN

Mern 01-01-2012 05:37 AM

Mike, with your half marathon right around the corner, that's great motivation for staying on the wagon. We all know you can do it! :)

Quinn, sorry to hear about your wind issues. Does your Mom live fairly close? Wishing you a safe trip!

Mom8TN, welcome! I love your bear avatar. :) Nice, sensible goals. Tell us a little about yourself. DH and I are retired and spend a lot of our time caring for four of our seven grandkids while our daughter is at work. The kids are in school, but we have no school busses, so two hours of my day are spent fighting school area traffic and waiting in parking lots. I exercise five days a week--just walking two miles either by DVD or on a treadmill at the Y. Proud to brag that I was able to lower my blood sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol with dietary changes and no need for meds. Oops, daughter is out of town so I kept three grandkids overnight. The seven year old is finally ready for lunch, so I'll be back on later.

dar n 01-01-2012 05:43 AM

Happy New Year!!

Mike Glad to see how eager you are to get us all back to healthy eating lol.

Cassie How was your party? Thanks for the supportive words yesterday.

Mern I am glad to see you still posting your blessings.

Quinn Stay warm hopefully your power will stay up and the storm will pass soon.

Mom8TN Welcome nice goals to start.

My goals are pretty much for Monday but I might hit a few of them today depending on if we get company for dinner than the wine will kill the calories.:) I didn’t do horribly yesterday as I got turned into the designated driver aka mom so I was up until 3am driving 20 year olds around it’s amazing how funny intoxicated young men think they are:rolleyes:. I hope you all enjoy new years day.:)

Goals:
Walk 25k:
Exercise 5 days:
Squats 5 days:
Ab work 5 days:
Arm weights 3 days:
Calories less than 1400:
Calorie deficit of 5000 for week:
No sugar:
Cleanse\Eat raw 2 days:

ToriD1012 01-01-2012 06:13 AM

I'm so here! Mom8TN, welcome to the madness!

So, yeah, I'm just getting up and moving for the day. I'm sitting here watching the Panthers lose to the Saints, and I'll take that any day of the week. Actually waiting til 4 to watch the Falcons (don't want to hear it from y'all, I agree Coach Smith was being a whiny butt. we were outplayed by a better team. GAWD that was hard to say). Just because Charlotte is only an hour away doesn't mean I'm going to drop the team I've always supported when "Carolina" got a team back in the 90s. And besides, it should be named the Charlotte Panthers or the NORTH Carolina Panthers, not just Carolina. That kind of stuff irks me. We are two different states!!!!! I hate being lumped into a category "just because".

Anyway, I am happy to report that I had a friggin' BLAST last night! And I'm happy that I took some tylenol before hitting the sheets. I had my obligatory Diet Dew for my caffeine fix and I'm pretty much good to go today. I'll stick to water the rest of the day. Maybe. Sooooo.....Cuter-Nicer showed up last night. And there was flirting, and there was dancing, and I've heard rumor that there was a Midnight New Year's kiss, but I don't remember any of that. I do however remembered lots and lots of drinks and shots. Luckily it's not something that I make a habit out of, and I had a designated driver, so no chance of a DUI for me. It just felt nice to let loose and party. I'm pretty sure I'll hear all about it tomorrow at work (party was held by a former co-worker).

I'm going to go find some food, maybe get a work out in before 4, that way it's over and done with and I can enjoy watching my boys. Will post goals later today, or in the morning.

Mike--as much as it'll pain you, root root root for the Dirty Birds, 'kay??

Awesome, Tori!! So glad you had such fun :D

Mom8TN, so glad to have you along! Good looking goals!

Darlene, how was your party? I hope you had fun. Hope you got some good laughs as a designated driver. If it was anything like my son coming out of anesthesia (singing "I'm Sexy and I Know It" was a highlight), I'm sure it was hysterical. Enjoy your day today :). I did go last night for a couple hours, but I came home about 10:30 to hang out with the boy (he said he didn't want to go and be taunted by treats he didn't feel up to eating). I stuck to the veggie tray and a few wheat thins, drank Fresca, and did NOT eat any of the chocolate chip cookies I made for my son...left about a dozen and a half here with him (he's got them in his room) and took the rest to the party. Lots of tempting treats, but desperation helped me resist them. Hoping for another good day today, as well as a good day for all of you.

Lots of red, I'm afraid to say, but I don't think I really over did it. Like many of you have commented too much sugar, fat, and just plain over indulgence makes me feel so yucky. And I really don't feel too bad today so using my body as a guide, I'm thinking that I am probably OK..

Pam, so glad you enjoyed your visits with your sister, and DH's friend and son. The guys were "..out slaying trout..." :D Great attitude about the holiday eating. And yup, sticking together is what makes us such a great, supportive group and keeps us motivated as individuals.

mhibdon, you applied with the Triathalon Company? If so, congrats and I'm sure they'd be glad to have someone with your motivation and experience. :D

Darlene, I, too, am hoping the shock to my system (finally being back on track again and then the scale whoosh of letting go of, in the end, 2 lbs. of water retention) will help keep my scale numbers moving downward. Wow, you really have lost a lot of weight since Jan. 2008 and are so close to goal! Maybe by the time you get there your blood pressure will be a bit better, too, and maybe your doc will then agree to put you on a lower dose of high blood pressure meds. But, as my own doctor said, some people's health issues are more hereditary than from lifestyle, so not everyone can go without meds. I have glaucoma and have to use eye drops for that--no dietary or lifestyle changes that apply. That's absolutely fantastic that your DH is willing to make some food changes. My DH won't log his food, either, but he made enough changes that he learned his new healthier food lifestyle, so can get by without logging. I can certainly attest to his being on board with a healthier diet helping me as well.

Tori, I hope your thyroid meds wind up to have been at the correct level for your requirements. Hope you had fun at your new year celebration. Sorry cuter-nicer-havebeenflirtingwith-guy wasn't in the mix.

Cassie, congrats on your 40 minute walk with DH yesterday. I have no doubt you'll soon be back to your normal level of activity. Hey, I see you DID IT--went to the party, avoided the cookies, had a wonderful weekend goal report! Congratulations on a job well done!

Mike, 3 hours washing the driveway is "count-it-as exercise" worthy! LOL on your reply to Cassie. I think I'll use that excuse next time my kitchen floor needs washing: "I'll probably mess it up."

ToriD1012 01-01-2012 07:22 AM

Mern--he actually did show. So I wound up staying there through the night and not hitting up the smaller quieter gathering. My friend, host of the second place, understood LOL! I managed to have quite the good time, and not worry about "He's-so-not-worthy-of-me".

Mern 01-01-2012 07:30 AM

Darlene, yeah, counting my blessings also helps keep away a sour puss attitude over things that really annoy me. :D Congrats on having two great kids who allow you to be their designated driver! Nice goals for Monday!

Tori, so glad you had a fun New Year celebration and kudos on having a designated driver. I caught your post about cuter-nicer-havebeenflirtingwith-guy being at the first party. Oh, no, was it a kiss shared with HIM that you don't remember? LOL If so, wishing future kisses that you WILL remember. I also see you didn't go to the quieter celebration at your friend's--glad the friend understood. :)

Cassie, I chuckled aloud over the boy singing "I'm Sexy and I Know It" when coming out of the anesthesia. LOL Again, kudos on your restraint on the party goodies!

OK, today is my scheduled day off exercise. My grandkids are gone now so I'm going to go straighten the kitchen and then watch TV. DH is warming leftovers for his dinner, so for my own dinner I'll cook myself some of the Swai fish (Vietnamese white fish) that he doesn't like. That and some green beans will give me a really nice report for tomorrow--already have my evening snack logged. Hope I keep strong so I can report an all green day for the first day of the year. :)

Mern 01-01-2012 07:48 AM

Oh, Mike, I forgot to thank you for the tip about the pill minder for remembering to take my evening fish oil. I keep my morning dose of fish oil and vitamin D in the pill minder on the kitchen table so I always remember to take it at breakfast. I have a smaller, vivid blue one that holds my evening dose of fish oil and it coincidentally fits into the cut-out in the base of my computer monitor. I've remembered to take it ever since your tip. Thanks! :D

I saw you put flossing in your goals. Do you normally floss at night? I used to have a problem when not flossing until bedtime. Too often I'd fall asleep on the couch watching TV and when I awoke around midnight I'd brush my teeth but promise myself I'd floss first thing in the morning. But then I'd forget... My hygenist told me it doesn't matter what time of day I floss as long as I do it every 24 hours, so now I routinely floss when I brush my teeth in the morning. Morning flossing might be the ideal time to floss, but now I'm getting way better checkups.

Yeah, host of party #1 swears that Cuter-Nicer and I shared "such a polite little New Year's Kiss", but I think I would have remembered that. AND my driver would have said something, which he didn't. So I'm thinking that Host was confused. While, I did consume massive amounts of 'liquid courage', I remember the night pretty well. I even remember my shoes getting urinated on by one party goer.:eek: Yeah I went home barefoot LOL!!!

Mern 01-01-2012 08:01 AM

Oh, that's funny that the host remember the "kiss" that you didn't. Seems like since you were looking forward to seeing cuter-nicer-havebeenflirtingwith-guy you'd have remembered the kiss unless you were drunk out of you skull. LOL Oh, man, that sucks about your shoes! Yeah

ToriD1012 01-01-2012 08:38 AM

See, that's just the thing...I wasn't expecting to see him, so therefore wasn't looking forward to anything. I wasn't drunk out of my skull, well inebriated, but I've been worse and remember everything. I think Host was tore up from the floor up and imagined what she wanted to see.

And it does suck about my shoes. They were the cutest little peep toes. And now I'll never be able to wear them again. Not because they were ruined, but because, well now they'll forever be known as The Pee Shoes.

01gt4.6 01-01-2012 08:43 AM

Spent 3 more hours to finish the driveway and sidewalk. Using an electric pressure washer takes a lot longer than a gas on. :( I may cut the grass just to clean it up, then on to the garage. The garage will be a nightmare, it's a disaster.

Tori, the dirty birds are looking good! Too bad I was busy out front and missed the Saints game. I thought it was a night game, guess I was wrong.

Welcome aboard mom8! Looks like you have some solid goals there.

Quinn, hope you get your power sorted out. Just imagine how cold it would be of you were to sleep under that bridge to tonight! ;)

You didn't miss much of a game. So far the birds are looking like the team they should. **fingers crossed**

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I'm thinking this will be a good one. My horror-scope says that this will be a great year for career moves, which certainly fits in with my goals for the year. (Lost weight 2 years ago, started a weight lifting program last year, time to get back to the career stuff).

I guess I'm a little surprised no one has brought up New Year's resolutions . Maybe everyone is hoping/expecting to simply stay on the path started last year. I'm not one for lots of resolutions, but I do usually set 1 or 2 major goals (i.e. career path this year).

The exception is mom8TN - welcome! Jump on in... the water's fine.

Congrats to those who managed to party and still keep a healthy eating plan. Tori, I am soooo glad you had a great time last night ;). Mern enjoy a little time to cook and eat a meal just for you. Sounds like you've been putting more that your fair share of time in the kitchen.

Mike, what does the power washer do that regular hosing/sweeping can't do?

We had a quiet evening of leftovers, a little TV, and reading. I think we made it to 10:30. Today has been cleaning, straightening, and sorting through the house. DH is puttering in the basement finishing a batch of beer (he is an awesome homebrewer - much to my downfall), and getting ready to finish hanging some drywall in the sauna room. A nice calm way to start the NY. I did get some yoga in and a short run - so my goals for NY's day are met :D.

Goals for next week will be simple. It will be a chopped up week. I'll head back to Riverside on Mon, then a couple of Dr appt, conference calls, and catching up on administrivia, then head back up here to meet with a former grad student to finish some papers over the weekend.

1. 2 pieces of fruit a day
2. 1 liter of just plain water
3. No white food
4. 1 tempo run and 1 long run
5. Measure blood pressure daily (it was waaaay high this afternoon)
6. Carbs less than 40%
7. Total calories less than 1600

Catch y'all later!

PS I did pick-up on the tread being started a day early, but I thought is was most appropriate given the new year :D

ToriD1012 01-01-2012 09:35 AM

Pam, I thought about making a couple of resolutions. Then I remembered that I did that back in November when I started on this wonderful journey. So, I figured, mine are already made now I just have to stick with them.

p.s.--Cuter-Nicer just texted me asking if I had heard the rumors. So apparently I'm right, and nothing happened. He did say that "when we have a first kiss, it won't be because we were drunk on New Year's Eve. It would be because we both wanted to, not because it was expected." Notice, it was a WHEN and not an IF. I'm thinking '12 is gonna be my year......

Whooohooo! Awesome, you are, indeed, off to a rip-snorting start. :D;):p

01gt4.6 01-01-2012 10:39 AM

Pam, it cleans much deeper. You really don't realize how nasty your driveway is until you hit it with a pressure washer.

I'm waaaay under on food. I need to plan better. I kept myself so busy so I wouldn't eat. It worked, too well.

Mern 01-01-2012 10:54 AM

Tori, I'd never wear the Pee Pee shoes again, either. OMG, so cool that Cuter-Nicer texted you that message. Yeah, that "WHEN" is kinda romantic. :)

Mike, all that work on the driveway, sidewalk, and garage certainly will burn the calories! Don't let yourself get TOO hungry. How about a protein shake or peanut butter sammich for a snack later? Hope you make it successfully on target the rest of the day.

Mike and Pam, I couldn't believe my eyes when my stepson pressure washed our patio for us a couple years ago--looked almost like newly poored concrete. Truly looked better than when we first moved here back in 1973.

Pam, I was going to ask about everyone's New Year's resolutions but had to get busy straightening the kitchen. Best wishes on your career goals. I do most of the kitchen work, but DH is pretty good--he does about 1/3 of the cleaning in there and gets his own food maybe 20% of the time. But, hey, I'll take all the sympathy you have to offer. LOL Oh, that's neat that your DH brews his own beer. My sister used to make her own wine and it was awesome. :) A sauna room! Wow, that's nice! Congrats on having your New Year's Day goals met. I will, too, when I finish drinking another 16 oz. water and stick to only the evening snack that I already logged. Best wishes on your chopped up week goals. Had to chuckle--very astute of you to have caught the thread being started a day early. I didn't notice.

I have a few New Year resolutions that don't involve my eating or exercise lifestyle:

1. Quit enabling someone over his non-employment. Don't want to discuss it here--I have a plan.
2. Keep my cool and don't let a certain younger grandchild of mine (not live-in GD) push my buttons to the point of making me yell or threaten punishment to get her to comply with a simple request or directive like "Please hang up your jacket or please pick up your mess you left on the table."
3. Empty the dish drainer daily--we let stuff set in there until it's air-dried and then pile more wet dishes on top of the dry. Maybe I'll make myself do it before I'm allowed to eat breakfast.

01gt4.6 01-01-2012 10:59 AM

Oh Mern, you're welcome for the reminder. I missed that post earlier.

New year, new week goals

Hi, My name is Lisa, new here. Not sure about goals. This is what I want to accomplish this week:

1. Breakfast and Lunch shakes.
2. Fruit/yogurt snacks.
3. Normal dinner.
4. Not eating after 8pm.
5. 45 mins minimum treadmill each am before work.
6. Tap on Tuesday, Zumba on Thursday.
7. Water, water, water.
8. Update post!

I'm not really good at counting calories. My goal is to keep under 1500 calories a day. We'll see.

Welcome aboard Lisa. Counting calories can seem crazy at first, before long it'll be a way of life.

1. Breakfast and Lunch shakes.
2. Fruit/yogurt snacks.
3. Normal dinner.
4. Not eating after 8pm.
5. 45 mins minimum treadmill each am before work.
6. Tap on Tuesday, Zumba on Thursday.
7. Water, water, water.
8. Update post!

I'm not really good at counting calories. My goal is to keep under 1500 calories a day. We'll see.

Welcome Lisa, you have a great set of goals. As Mike said, you'll get the hang of logging your food. The trick is to do it everyday - good, bad or indifferent. You may be surprised where your calories are coming from. I know I was .

Sunday Evening Check In
Goals:

1. Eat Clean: No
2. 3 L: Working on it
3. Take Vitamin: Yes
4. Move: Yes

Hey guys!
I missed my eating clean for today due to a chocolately snack around midnight, but I now have glucose tabs to help me even out my sugar! Whoo-hoo! Also, tots kept my calories within a sensible range (1575), hellz yeah!

Jogged 3.5mi today while my mom walked beside me! We clocked an even 16 min pace! Hoo-Ha! ANDDDDD I applied to the triathlon company and I think I was accepted! They messaged me about getting pictures for my Bio, so… YEAH!!! Now to get into the fray! I’m so excited!

Have my motto for 2012: Persistence. Definition. PUSH.

Can’t wait to get to know all the new girls! :)

mh--congrats on your calories and your 3.5 mile jog.

I on the other hand have been very lazy today. I sooo meant to get my workout in before the Falcons game, but the cat was all snuggly and I didn't. I have to start buckling back down tomorrow. It is Zumba night after all!

mhibdon, aw, I'm glad it was the Triathalon work you applied for. :) If I eat around midnight Saturday night or in the wee hours Sunday before bed, I count it as Saturday. My day of counting starts when I get out of bed in the morning. Nice calorie count, though, even if you did miss eating clean. Congrats on the rest of your goals. Impressive jog, too! :) Question: maybe I have you mixed up with someone who used to post regularly earlier in 2011 but didn't have an avatar. She was a college student and I remember her saying she and her fiance (I think) broke up. Is your ex named Louie?

Lisa, hi! Welcome! Nice goals! Have you tried the nutrition here for counting your calories? It's really a great tool--does so much of the work for you.

Pam, great point about learning (through logging) where our calories are coming from. Lead me to eating more nutritious foods.

Tori, enjoy your Zumba tomorrow. :)

New to this...well new to finally taking it seriously anyway. My only goal right now for the short-term is to stay motivated and not quit like I've done so many times before.

On a short note, can someone tell me, how do you guys add progress pictures and how do you use the food list? When you enter something such as a salad, do you have to enter every item individually, i.e. dressing, cheese, etc?

Good luck to everyone. Here's to a happy and healthy new year. :D
