Hi All,
I had to step away from the thread this week as work was just too hectic. But just so ya know, I've stayed pretty true to the standard weekly list. But I did want to chime in on the marriage thing. DH and I will be celebrating our 25th in March. And we have had some rough patches over the years. We're both pretty head strong, and since we are both in pretty high stress, publish or perish jobs, we sometimes forget that there is someone else, besides ourselves, we need to care for in this relationship. In other words, both of us have been very self centered and selfish from time to time. And that can be very distructive to any relationship Many, many years ago good old Dear Abby had a great slogan (for lack of a better term): "Would you be better off without him/her?" Since neither of us have ever been able to honestly say yes, even in the worst of times, we stuck it out. And yes, we are happier and more in love than ever. The other thing that has worked for us is that while like Quinn says we have never put our pals before each other we do, indeed, have some independence. We have stuff we share, and stuff we do with buddies. We're kind of the antithesis of co-dependence. And yes... date night pretty much every week. Although sometimes we have a candle light dinner in our jammies - just so we're clear what comes next . Most of our friends are working on their 2nd or 3rd marriages. We feel blessed that found each other. Pam |
michelle ~ well that explains it, but like we all know doesn't make it right. i respect your professionalism & won't pry. hehehe i like my purple costume too & once i 'shrink' a little i have one i bought from another bellydancer a pretty blue that i'll spruce up.
ruby ~ nice that this thread cheers you up. okay weighed myself this evening 167.2 lbs  not the best time to weigh myself in the evening. i don't feel great about it, but that number will drop RIGHT? anyways off to do some bollywood practicing. |
well practicing didn't work to well...lol. haven't done this choreo since the summer & it's all broken down written, BUT i learn choreo by learning the steps with the music once i know a piece i can tell exactly where i am by the slightest beat, however we never totally learned this piece soooo i'm trying to remember by reading the choreo & that's not how i learn choreo so it is very fruitless though i do love the music. i think once my son is in bed i'll play it in the living & just rock out to it...lol...& improve, get some exercise. try to remember the parts i can. we practice next week so it's not the end of the world.

The Oreo discussion got me earlier today. I had a chocolate Vitatops and it was awesome.
I was cranky today. I did what I thought was a beastly cardio workout and wore my heart monitor for it. At the end of an hour my muscles were on fire and I felt like I had really worked hard. I looked at the heart rate monitor and...246 measly calories. Seriously? At that point I really did think for a brief moment, "what's the use?" I think I'm over it now (and mollified myself with fantasies of afterburn), but it's just as well I'm not getting on the scale this week; no need to add to the frustration! Soo..., today was: 1. Calorie deficit of 250-300, because I keep slipping and can't get back to my pre-holiday weight/body fat % Yes, Yes but barely, Yes, Yes 2. Balance the pie chart, carbs no more than 45% Yes-45, Yes-45, Yes-43 (somehow, success on my meatless day this week), Yes-45 3. Exercise 7X's (daily, or double up) Doubled up today (weights and intervals), yes (3 mile run), yes (hour of yoga), yes (cardio with weights for an hour) 4. Sleep at least seven hours a night. Fail, Yes, Yes, Yes 5. Get in three of my water bottles daily (I'm pretty regular about 2) Yes, Just finishing, No, Yes 6. Stay off the scale this week Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes 7. One organizational office task per day (at least a small one) Not today-but I helped set up the Scholastic Book Fair at school, Yes, Yes, Yes 8. Finish painting stair trim and spindles by end of weekend Weekend being the operative word... 9. Try a new healthy recipe or make over an old one Not yet 10. Complete the family financial summit with hubby Scheduled for Saturday I hope you all have had a great day! (Pam...why bother with jammies, lol? Actually, I would imagine eating sans clothing would pretty much be a pretty strong portion control motivator for anyone...). |

I've posted this before, if you are having a chocolate craving try this:
"Chocolate Mousse" I do a ratio of 1:10 1= Optimum Nutrition (gold standard) Chocolate Supreme Casein Protein (which ever protein or brand that you prefer) 10= Non Fat Greek Yogurt. Here's out it looks... 17 grams Casein Protein + 170grams (6oz container) Oikos Plain Organic Greek Yogurt. Mix it up and throw it in the freezer for a few mins. 159 cals .5g fat = 3% 8.3g carbs = 21% 29.6g protein = 76% (slow digesting protein to get you through the night) |

Jess, I feel ya. I never get anything back either; being self-employed, nothing is taken out of my check; instead, I have the pleasure of writing Uncle Sam a check every three months. Report card for Thursday
Ugh, I thought I had the day off and put off my workout this morning, then next thing I know I have to go into work for a meeting. One thing led to another and I spent the whole day there. So I did NO exercise today! Damn. I took my dog on two long walks and walked to and from work but that's not quite the same as the burn I get from the 30 Day Shred. I will have to make up for it this weekend!
To make matters worse my boss insisted on treating me to lunch and everything was super carby so I went with a sausage and lentil dish and some cauliflower soup but I can't be sure how much fat was in those dishes. In any case, I ended up going past my 1500 calorie limit by 67 calories today. I have some major catching up to do tomorrow. Maybe I can get two workouts in and cut back on the food a little. My goals for this week: 1. Do the 30 Day Shred every morning NO / YES / YES / No :( 2. Weigh in, only on Tuesday YES / YES / YES / YES 3. Eat between 1300-1550 calories per day. YES (1290) / YES (1399) / YES (1402) / No (1567) 4. Keep carbs under 40% YES (17%) / YES 25% / YES 38% / YES 35% 5. Drink 10 big glasses of water per day. DONE! / YES! / YES / YES 6. Join the Y. Not yet... / Not yet... |

Oh wait, I get paid the big bucks here, I may just ask for another raise. ;) I'm kidding btw. |

Jess, everybody's different. I lost 20 pounds with carbs anywhere from 50-60%. I'd temporarily whack it lower, like now, when I'm in a plateau, but just because low carb works for someone else doesn't mean it works for you. My best advice is to experiment with different things and to find out what's best for your body. And don't forget to eat your healthy fats, too!

Caroline,
I couldn't agree with you more about date night! Anyone who has read my posts for the last year, knows that I'm a huge fan of this. My husband and I have set aside Friday as date night for over 20 years. Can I throw in my 2 cents worth as one of the "old ladies" on here? :o I can't say that my husband and I have ever gone through a "rough patch". In fact, people that know us well would tell you that we never even fight. When people comment on our marriage or ask how we do it, we always tell them the same thing: Never say anything negative about your spouse to anyone. You should be each others biggest, most vocal cheerleaders. Always present a united parenting front to your children. If you disagree about something, talk it over in private, then stand united. Be kind, respectful, courteous and polite to each other always! Even if you want to say something hurtful, don't. Set aside a date night that is non-negotiable! If daughter wants to have a sleep over that night, tough. If son wants to have the guys over for pizza, tough. This is your night. Dress as you would when you were dating... both of you. And, I know it's cliché, but be each others best friend always. Don't put girlfriends (or for him, buddies) ahead of your spouse... ever. This one is really easy for us because we were best friends for many, many years before it ever occurred to us to ever date. When we were single and just friends, we would call each other after dates with other people and say how awful it was... in detail. Believe me... I heard some stories... but we don't have any secrets, that's for sure. I told him everything and he told me everything. We whined to one another for years that there were no good people left out there to date. Sometimes exactly what you're looking for is right under your nose. ;) |

He worked afternoon shift most of the time until our kids were almost out of high school, so it was a lot like single-parenting for me--our boy and girl together and his two boys from his first marriage every other weekend. Oh, how I wish I'd known way back then that it's not only OK, but highly advisable to set aside one day a week for date night. We made it through and are both now retired, so it's a lot easier now and our marriage is a lot happier. :)...

Michelle, I have a friend who's stepson was having terrible bullying issues. She didn't really know what to do for him so she ended up taking him to a martial arts program for self defense. It was a wonderful solution for him, and boosted his self esteem to the point where he isn't "victim" material anymore. Before the situation was completely resolved there was an incident where the biggest bully grab hold of him and was about to draw blood, but her son knew exactly how to reverse the hold and ended up with the bully pinned to the ground. Anyway by the time an adult arrived, there were enough witnesses that my friends' stepson didn't get in trouble. The bully swung first, and all her kid did was defend himself. He didn't even hurt the bully, well, he maybe damaged his pride a little.
That's an awesome story. I love hearing when the kid who gets bullied defends himself :) My 5 year old was being kicked by an older kid in his elementary school and then the kid had him in a chokehold where he couldn't breathe anymore, so he bit the bully on the arm leaving a bloody bite mark. Teacher called me to tell me what happened and I had no idea my son was such a fighter. He thought he was going to be in trouble when he got home, and instead I gave him a hug and told him I was proud of him for defending himself. He was relieved. Later he came up to me and told me "I'm happy because you are proud of me." :D |

okay going to try to touch on everyone before i head back to work...lol. if i miss you i'm sorry.
cassie ~ LOVE THAT i might actually eat my evening snack naked as motivation to stick with it jess ~ that sucks about having to pay back uncle sam :( rose ~ you only went over by a little & you made the best choices you could. i know you'll make it up. maybe some extra water to help flush out the extra sodium you may have consumed. jess ~ cj & muna are right you have to do what works for you. that's why journaling your food is sooo important. not only to keep you on track, but it's a great tool. you can look back over each day & see what you ate in comparison with how much weight you lost. it won't be long before you figure out exactly what foods & combinations work best to keep you burning as much as your body can. almkeeper ~ that's awesome that your calories are doing better. its hard when others are having goodies. were there healthy choices at the kids party? my son's school will only allow healthy snacks for parties so that helps me out...lol. mike ~ when i have my weigh in i do it as soon as i get up, then i'll do it again before i have a shower & then probably after my shower as well crazy huh? well didn't like what my scaled said last night 167.2 ewwww. i have to do something about that before i'm back where i was. busy at work today plus i get to go out to a fashion show tonight so that will be fun. well i need to run & go back to work. have a good weekend everyone. |
Ok... so in keeping with "do something nice each day for someone", I took my elderly mother out to lunch. "Anywhere you want to go", I said. She chose Pizza Hut.... yeah.... 620 calories and 26 grams of fat later, I have driven myself right into the ditch!:mad::mad: I was doing so well, too.

You ladies are marvelous! Gave me the inner strength to actually spit out a piece of sushi because I went over my cal limit for the day. Right now I'm sticking to the mantra of "I'm not hungry, I'm just bored/thirsty/emotional, and all of these are in my power to fix!"
Oh my goodness, please please pleaseeeee share more low cal, high protein chocolate recipes! I am pre-diabetic and chocolate is ALWAYS my downfall! I am super excited to go grocery shopping so that I can try it out! Almeeker: I've found that packing my own snacks in my purse always help. Even if it is just a serving of celery before I fall on the diabetes (term I use to describe unhealthy snacks), that is still less stomach space for me to fill with sugar. Rubypeanut: I've found that drinking extra water, eating soup, and napping always help me when I'm sick. Health: 1. Drink water: Yes, No, No, Yes, Yes (Almost 3L!!!) Life: 1.
