Default 202 code vs Maryland 240/301

My friend lives near Germantown MD but has a 202 number. Aren't 240 or 301 nearby codes for Maryland? Why would someone there use a DC code instead? Just curious how the boundaries work here.

Yeah, 240 and 301 are the main Maryland area codes around Germantown, but it’s pretty common now for people to keep older numbers when they move. Your friend may have originally lived or worked in DC and kept the 202 number after switching carriers or relocating. With mobile phones, area codes no longer strictly match where someone currently lives. I usually check unfamiliar numbers through this link to see where they originally came from.
