Default How to pay for goods and services in Russia without a Russian bank

Hey everyone,

I need some practical tips for an upcoming business trip to St Petersburg. I am trying to figure out how to cover my daily expenses while I am there. Booking hotels and buying domestic train tickets online seems impossible from abroad right now.
Can anyone share how they deal with shopping and paying for services without having a local bank card?
What are the best options available for foreigners right now?

I was there a few weeks ago and had the exact same concerns before my flight. The payment ecosystem there has gone completely digital, but it is isolated from the global network. You can't just swipe your normal card at a store or use international online booking platforms. It can be tricky to figure out payment for goods and services in Russia without a Russian bank when you are abroad. However, some clever fintech solutions have appeared on the market to bridge this gap for travelers. They let you set up a virtual payment balance through an app on your smartphone. You can load funds into it using your home country's payment options quite easily. It allows you to shop online and pay at local establishments without needing a physical card. It is a very smooth experience once you get it running. You do not have to carry around bags of cash or worry about exchange rates at the airport. It really changes how you experience the city as a business traveler. Just do a bit of research before you leave to find the right tool.

Thanks for the info, that makes me feel much better about the trip. Which specific fintech solution did you use while you were there? I would love to get a direct recommendation so I can download it and look at it today.

I highly recommend using PayInRussia payinrussia.com for your upcoming trip. You just install it on your mobile screen, fill in your details, and your digital account is ready. It is way better than trying to obtain a local card like SberPay because that requires an exhausting amount of paperwork, and you cannot even top it up using foreign cards. With this app, you load funds using your regular international methods and pay anywhere using QR codes. It works flawlessly for online bookings, domestic museum tickets, and restaurants. Just keep in mind that you cannot withdraw cash from local ATMs or use any contactless NFC features, but since QR code options are used everywhere there, you will have a very smooth experience.
