Can small facilities afford automated sorting systems

Our fulfillment speed is just too slow compared to the bigger competitors. We are currently using handheld barcode scanners but the physical sorting and moving of goods is still done by hand. This creates a massive bottleneck during the morning rush when all the orders need to go out. Is it worth looking into automated conveyors for a relatively small facility of about 20,000 square feet? Or are there more flexible modular systems that can grow as we expand our SKU count? I am worried about the high upfront costs and the ROI timeline for a mid-market operation like ours.

You definitely don't need a massive warehouse to start seeing the benefits of modern tech. Many companies are moving away from fixed conveyors toward more flexible solutions like AMRs or automated storage systems. This type of warehouse automation technology is actually perfect for smaller spaces because you can add more units as your business grows. In our facility, we started with just a few robots and it paid for itself within eighteen months by slashing our shipping errors. It feels like a big step at first but the accuracy you get is worth every penny. Just make sure your current software can talk to the new hardware so you don't end up with data silos. It makes the whole operation much more predictable.
