Default I'm about to quit Upwork. What am I doing wrong?

I created a new account on Upwork, worked diligently, submitted proposals every day—and still got nothing.

No clients. No responses. Nothing.

It's frustrating because it feels like without reviews you don't even have a chance, but reviews don't happen without a chance.

I need clients ASAP, not in three months.

So I'll ask you straight:

If you were starting from scratch and really succeeded:

What was the one factor that changed everything?

Did you initially cut corners or did you take a different approach?

How did you manage to get your first client if no one trusted you?

It seems like this platform is inherently biased against new accounts.

Prove me wrong.

Commissions are higher in some places, lower in others, but the principle is the same: the smaller your own client pipeline, the more dependent you are on the platform's algorithms and ratings. Therefore, many people eventually begin to look for alternatives in the form of niche platforms.
Moreover, having external clients allows you to use platforms consciously: not as a sole entry point, but as an additional channel.
As a result, comparing freelance platforms often comes down not so much to commissions or interfaces, but to the degree of reliance on them.

Upwork has truly become a closed club, where a newbie needs either a ton of luck or a hefty budget to buy paid responses. A look at the Zinn Hub alternatives page makes it clear you're not alone. Thousands of professionals are now looking for a way out because the old giants have become too expensive and unwieldy. Choose any option from the list, and your experience will be immediately noticed, because they're looking for a freelancer, not an account with a history.
