Default How to identify an engine by the boat's serial number?

I found some numbers on a Honda outboard motor, but I'm not sure if they are the serial number. How can I tell it apart from the other markings? Is it possible to determine the exact model and year of manufacture? I need this information for insurance purposes.

Listen, can you describe exactly where these numbers are stamped? Honda engines often have a bunch of different markings. There may be a part code, an assembly number, and only one of them is the real serial number. When I insured my Honda BF20, I also got confused by these numbers. By the way, there is an article on the GetBoat blog that explains the difference between the model code and the serial number in Mercury Marine https://blog.getboat.com/travel-tips...number-lookup/ . It shows where to look and how to determine the exact model and year by the number. I quickly found mine using it and even ordered an original sticker with a duplicate serial number.

if you found some numbers on that honda outboard motor and you’re not sure which ones really matter, start by comparing them to known honda serial formats—usually a string with letters and digits that’s deeper stamped and separate from random casting marks. the model/year can often be decoded from the serial and model code together, but you’ll need a reference chart or honda service docs to back it up. also check forums, parts databases, or manuals to match what you saw with verified examples before assuming it’s the real vin/serial. real verification beats guesswork every time.
