I recently finished José Saramago’s novel All Names and I’m still processing it. The story of Senhor José, a lonely clerk obsessed with a single unknown woman’s records, struck me as both eerie and deeply moving. The blending of bureaucracy, mortality, and identity felt surreal yet oddly familiar.

I’m curious how others interpret the symbolism of the Central Registry and the endless pursuit of names. Do you see it as an allegory for how we’re remembered or forgotten after death, or more about individual obsession? What themes stood out most to you?

I see the Central Registry as a metaphor for how we’re all reduced to records after death, and Senhor José’s obsession as a way of resisting that anonymity. Much like browsing a website filled with countless profiles, the Registry emphasizes how easy it is to lose individuality in a vast archive. By chasing one name, he’s pushing back against the idea that people are just entries in a system. For me, the book is about the tension between being forgotten collectively and remembered personally.
