Motivation and Accountability Thread, March 30 - April 5: Bring on Spring!

Well, folks, March and Winter are almost in the rearview mirror. It won't be long before the daffodils and tulips are bursting forth, full of energy and sunshine. Ready? Of course we are!

I don't have any inspirational quotes (sorry!), so let's just go!

episode2011 03-30-2015 04:56 AM

No big changes this week. Just a few tweaks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Strategy for the Week (March 30 - April 5):
  • 7-day Rolling Average calories = 1200-1300: No reason to change this one.
  • 7-day Rolling Average water/tea, minimum 2500mL (10+ 8oz glasses): It was 1500, but I've been constantly blowing past that. Time to raise the bar.
  • 7-day Rolling Average sodium = 1000-1500: No reason to change.
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Sat-Fat = under 15g: This is a struggle. I haven't gone under 15 yet. Need to keep trying.
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Fiber = 15g or greater: Another struggle. It's had to up the fiber without getting loads of extra carbs.
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Net Carbs = under 130: Yet another struggle.
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Protein = 50-75g: I tend to like protein items, but the ones I like best are married to sat-fat *sigh*
  • Explore! Try something new or do some nutrition-related research at least 2 times: As a notoriously picky eater (my list of "don't likes" is far longer than my list of "likes"), it's a big stretch for me to try new foods, but I love doing research and learning new (and often quirky) things. Explore! challenges me to expand my horizons. And it's fun!
JenniferP1 03-30-2015 05:03 AM
The sun is shining, the temps are going up....it's going to be a great week!!!
Here are my goals:
7 day average calorie count deficit of 500
7 day average exercise 30 minutes a day
7 day average for step count: 10000 a day
water intake - 70 ounces a day
episode2011 03-30-2015 07:20 AM
*Whew!*
Ok, I have a few minutes here; let's see if I can catch up on some comments. This post will be long (and for me, that's saying something!).
Hope: Yep yep about the fiber gummies being "tough on the tummy". I made the mistake of chowing down on 2 servings the first day. Not my best nutrition decision. True, it brought my fiber intake up for the day, which is a positive, but let's just say I had a hard time mingling with polite society for the remainder of the day :p. Now I understand why the experts recommend gradually increasing fiber. So sorry to hear you're still having to deal with the fibro. That stinks. I was hoping that, perhaps over the years, it had settled down (does it ever just go away?). I hope you're feeling good today.
Jennifer: How wonderful that the family is on board and supportive. That's a BIG help.
Debbie: Hi there! Hope you're feeling better! And I hope this week is a bit more settled for you than last week was. Thanks for starting the new challenge!
Lisa: Sounds like the bag business is really taking off! Woohoo! With regard to the hummus recipe, I've never tried avocado either (hehe amazing I got so big with such a limited palate!). It would be a double challenge for me to try it! Good for you for going to the seminar. Options are a good thing and researching all your options is really smart (even if the presenter wasn't the sharpest). With regard to your husband, I hope his comments were mostly empathetic and supportive. Sounds like he's trying :).
Vicki: Goodness, BIG drop, 2 pounds. Way to go! I'm sure it was a pleasant surprise to try on the Easter outfit, too! I'm glad to hear the GB issue has settled down. An upset GB can be such a misery.
Lynda: I like what you said about "dieting" vs eating "normal". I'm trying my best to make this current way of eating my "new normal". Of course, I've said that in the past (many, many times), but I'm hoping this time, it sticks (pffft I've said that in the past, too!). Good job stopping after 3 mini-donuts. You satisfied your sweet tooth without over-indulging. Tough to do, but you did it! Booyah!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ok, I *think* I got everyone (if I missed someone, it wasn't intentional). Something I found interesting, after reading through the last 3 days of comments, is how many of us smoked AND, more importantly, how many of us smoked during the same period of our lives. We all started around age 12-14 and all quit around age 24-27. And we're all here, struggling with weight management. That says something. I'm not sure what, but something. Someone should commission a study!

Have a great day/week, peeps!

rainbow24 03-30-2015 08:53 AM

Okay, here we go:

Spring Camp starts Wednesday, so that means less activity for part of the day. What camp accepts 55 year olds as campers? Camp NaNoWriMo.

Attending a wedding on April 4

Fellowship and Brunch on April 5

Ongoing sewing projects:
  1. Jordik Hood (Linen)
  2. Irish Hood (Wool)
  3. Haversack
  4. Viking Apron Dress
  5. Linen Underdress
  6. Wool Cloak

This week goals:
  1. 8,330 words by April 5th
  2. Be mindful of sodium count in foods at wedding reception
  3. Be mindful of sugar content of brunch foods
  4. Walk on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
  5. Work on getting water intake back up
  6. Finish at least one sewing project

AZLisaLou 03-30-2015 11:40 AM

My goals this week:

  • Don't binge or over-indulge
  • More water, less soda
  • Very little in the junk food arena
  • More Atkins w/ milk when hungry

I was feeling pretty good there for a bit, and when that happens it's very common for those with mental illness to stop taking their meds. Even though I logically know this is a big mistake, part of me still hopes I'm miraculously cured and don't really need them anymore. I didn't take them for 4-5 days. I came to my senses last night, filled up my pill box and took my meds. It might have been too late bc I'm not feeling up to par today. Quite low actually. Stupid me.

Having BBQ chicken sandwiches and potato salad for dinner tonight. We rarely have potato salad, and it would normally take all my willpower not to eat too much, but I didn't buy a lot and somebody in this house already got their spoons into it. Now we may not even have enough for dinner.

Living in AZ sucks, and I wouldn't if I had a choice. Not even April and it's already 97F out there. NOT a good thing.

I hope everyone's week is started off on the right foot.

Epi, if you want to laugh until you cry, read the Amazon review on the Haribo sugar free gummy bears. I laugh every time I read it. Sorry the gummies gotcha. Definitely to be used in moderation.

Thank you for your compassion re the fibro. It doesn't go away but I have found ways to deal: 1) warm weather. DH agrees.
2) better diet, which brings me to some small weekly goals...

canary52 03-30-2015 01:49 PM

It's a weird week: job interview, visit with cousin recovering from major surgery, holiday. That being said:

1) best healthiest diet possible
2) don't sweat the small stuff
3) stretch
4) weigh in with friend for challenge (Thursday)

episode2011 03-31-2015 02:54 AM

Annette: Camp sounds like fun (yes, I looked it up :))! I never knew such a thing existed. Is there any significance to 8330 words? Sounds like you have a busy week with so many activities. I'm hoping they'll all be fun!

Lisa: You are so right about the meds. I'm very proud of you for realizing that. I assume it'll take a few days for them to kick back in. Hang in there, dear. You're doing great. With regard to the weather, 97F in MARCH??? Yikes. Do you have AC?

Hope: On your recommendation, I skimmed through a bunch of Haribo reviews on Amazon. I'm pretty sure I found the one you were talking about -- was it the one about the little sister? Because that one was hilarious! Changing subjects, good luck with the interview!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Strategy for the Week (March 30 - April 5):
  • 7-day Rolling Average calories = 1200-1300: 1269
  • 7-day Rolling Average water/tea, minimum 2500mL (10+ 8oz glasses): 3899
  • 7-day Rolling Average sodium = 1000-1500: 1279
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Sat-Fat = under 15g: 15 *sigh*
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Fiber = 15g or greater: 21
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Net Carbs = under 130: 127
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Protein = 50-75g: 63
  • Explore! Try something new or do some nutrition-related research at least 2 times:
    • Monday: Did some research on batwings, since it looks like I'll probably have them for the rest of my life. *sigh*
    • Monday: Tried a new brand of (low sodium) jerky, since the my usual brand was out of stock. A very good alternative -- not quite as tasty as my usual brand, but definitely worth another buy.
Has anyone tried matcha? I've known about it for a few years. I did some research on it when I was taking a Japanese class, but I never got around to actually trying it. That was back in the days when I thought of tea as a wimpy drink -- pffft I was a COFFEE drinker :D. Anyway, apparently, matcha is the new miracle health food for 2015 (move over kale, matcha is the new "it" girl). I'm seeing it touted everywhere. Have you tried it? Now that I'm a bona-fide tea drinker (I've only had 3 coffees in the past 6 months), sounds like this may be a candidate for this week's Explore!
AZLisaLou 03-31-2015 04:28 AM
Epi, Ooooooh, yes! There's no way to live here with no AC. Mine's been on since the middle of February. I have it set at 78. Plus a ceiling fan AND a tower fan in my room. I HATE being hot! I have never heard of matcha. What is it? let us know what you find out in your Explore.
Hope, Good luck on your interview!!!!
Don't know what today has in store for me yet. I slept the better part of the last day and a half. I felt so exhausted, and I was so down I couldn't bear to face the world, so I stayed in bed as much as possible. Normally, 8-2 in the day is my sleep time, but today I'm awake. I woke up at about 2am, and I finished the pink camo purse. I think I might work on the 2nd Breast Cancer Awareness purse today too.
Last night I had a win when I took it easy on the potato salad. I don't know how much a serving is, and I don't know how much my ice cream scooper holds, but everyone got 2 ice cream scoopfuls... It looked like maybe a cup all together. The bbq chicken sandwiches were delicious too.
Hope everyone has a good day!
rainbow24 03-31-2015 05:43 AM
In order to stay on track for the 50,000 word total you have to keep up to 1666 words per day, which roughly takes me to 8330 words for the end of the first partial week.
I start writing tonight at midnight. I am going to stay up for one hour writing.
LHall1965 03-31-2015 10:59 AM
Happy Tuesday friends. Been a hectic week - hubby is out of town visiting family and it is a busy week for me at work. I bought lots of healthy choices at the grocery this weekend. We had "Taco Tues" at work today so I offered to bring a southwestern salad made with rice, quinoa, black beans, and corn.
Very healthy - we also had some homemade salsa so tried to stick with lots of the veggies on a flour tortilla.
Epixi- I have never heard of matcha - is it a drink? Let us know what you discover.
Annette- Camp sounds like a lot of fun. We love to go camping in the summer. Anytime I can be outside.
Lisa - I would take a few of those hot day for the cold Feb we had in Ohio, but you can keep them the rest of the year- lol. I also hate to be hot. It is slowly warming up here. Great job on the serving of potato salad! Sounds like that was a delicious dinner. That is my biggest goal to learn to eat what I want but to keep the portion in control. Some days good - some I turn off my inner voice.
Hope- Good luck on the interview. Also noticed you had a weigh-in with a friend. That is so great you have someone to help along this journey. My husband is not a big eater but loves to snack at night. ( thankfully I am sleeping so do not join him) but he doesn't seem to gain so it is hard for me to talk to him about this. He is very supportive and encouraging but not the same as talking to someone that is going thru this.
Jennifer- great goals for the week!
Everyone have a great rest of the week - off to make a light dinner.
It snowed in my town. I can't complain cause I wasn't there but my friends and neighbors are indignant. It's almost April, they say, enough is enough.
Epi, I've got to read those reviews again. OK read the one on Amazon for the Haribo 5 lb bag of gummies. The one entitled My Dinner With Andrea. I laughed so hard, I read it again.
Annette, good luck with the writing!!! Good goal!!!!
Lynda, my friend is a Take Shape for Life rep. I don't follow the program but they have challenges. I have resisted because you have to put in $20 and also take a picture of yourself on a scale but things are getting out of control and she says it is fun so... For example, I am visiting a cousin who is healing from surgery. He wanted chicken parmesan and wasn't up to eating so guess who cooked and then ate a whole bunch of it? And I am allergic to tomatoes and dairy. Why do I do this?
As for the interview, I think it went well. Not sure I'll get it, not sure if it is for me, given that it is physically demanding. It is being a tour guide for various historic locations. Not much pay, not a job job, but I've been a guide before (at a winery) and it will hopefully leave me time to write. Thought about going back to teaching college but it's too much work. Also left a message at a place where I taught creative writing. At least there I didn't have much class prep and even better, no papers to grade!!!! Have even thought about working as a caterer/delivery person for people in need again!! Something will come!!!
AZLisaLou 03-31-2015 03:16 PM
Holy S**t!!! After the phone call I had last week with Medicare saying I couldn't get covered until July, I got a letter in the mail today saying I'm COVERED!!! It officially went into effect 3/1, but it was really a wasted month since it didn't all pan out until the month is now over. Tomorrow I am checking into getting some therapy started, and I'm going to take the next step in the process for lap band, which Medicare does partially cover.
AND
I found out my husband's insurance will start again (for certain!) 5/1!
What a day filled with wonderful news. And it was a good food day too. Other than some soda and probably a salad that was bigger than it should have been, I did really well.
A very good day indeed.
Annette: Ahhhh, now I understand 8330. It's a marriage between writing and math! Sweet :). I imagine you're writing right now, as I write this post. Good luck!
Lynda: That southwestern salad sounds delicious! I love black beans, corn and rice. But quinoa? Hehe yet another one to put on my Explore! list. I've been meaning to try it for a few years and just never got around to it.
Hope: I'll look for My Dinner with Andrea. I think I was looking at one of the Sugar-free Haribos (I never knew there were so many of them). My goodness, you've had a wide variety of experiences, each of which sounds exciting and fun!
For all who asked: Matcha (抹茶) (pronounced mah-cha) is a finely powdered green tea. It is the tea that's used in tea ceremonies, especially the Japanese Tea Ceremony. One of these days, I hope to go to a Japanese Tea Ceremony (my dream would be to actually attend one in Japan). In the meantime, I'll get some matcha here and see how it tastes. I've seen it in some local supermarkets as well as on Amazon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My Strategy for the Week (March 30 - April 5):
  • 7-day Rolling Average calories = 1200-1300: 1328, 1328 "But but but, I can explain!!"
  • 7-day Rolling Average water/tea, minimum 2500mL (10+ 8oz glasses): 3899, 3899
  • 7-day Rolling Average sodium = 1000-1500: 1340, 1335
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Sat-Fat = under 15g: 15, 15 *sigh*
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Fiber = 15g or greater: 23, 22
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Net Carbs = under 130: 134, 138 "Really, there's a logical explanation!"
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Protein = 50-75g: 67, 66
  • Explore! Try something new or do some nutrition-related research at least 2 times:
    • Monday: Did some research on batwings, since it looks like I'll probably have them for the rest of my life. *sigh*
    • Monday: Tried a new brand of (low sodium) jerky, since the my usual brand was out of stock. A very good alternative -- not quite as tasty as my usual brand, but definitely worth another buy.
Well, I had a nasty wake-up call. As I tend to do, I periodically monitor and review my food lists and portions. This evening I discovered that I somehow messed up on the entry for a Custom Food. It's a food I've been enjoying for years and is probably one of the first Custom Foods I ever entered on Fitday.

All this time, I thought a serving size was 1 cup (190 calories). I typically eat a half cup and record 95 calories. Turns out, however, a serving size is only 3/4 cup, meaning that whole cup is 253 calories. Uh oh. That half cup I've been chowing down on is actually worth 126 calories. YIKES!

Now, that's not a lot of additional calories, but it's enough to throw my Averages out of whack. Now that I have the proper values, I'll be able to compensate, but for the next few days, my Averages will probably be in the red. I wonder, though, did I mess up years ago? Or did the company adjust their serving sizes?

JenniferP1 04-01-2015 02:01 AM

Here are my goals:

7 day average calorie count deficit of 500 - 561, 451
7 day average exercise 30 minutes a day - 45, 30
7 day average for step count: 10000 a day - 10216, 10421
water intake - 70 ounces a day - 85, 67

Wow this week came in like a whirl wind! This is the first time I have been on since Monday morning. Between work, appointments and children's activities, there hasn't been any down time! Last night, I had to fill 400 eggs for an egg hunt today. It's not good when you find this out last minute and you are up after midnight surrounded by candy!! I did pretty good - - only lost a couple of little chocolate bunnies!

I hope you all are having a great week! I am hoping to catch up on post reading tonight!

Thank you all for your support!

rainbow24 04-01-2015 05:38 AM

935 words so far. I am going out now to pick up a burn permit.

I won't be walking for exercise this week, or next. Here is my to-do list instead:
  1. Mow back yard
  2. Burn pile of branches
  3. Trim and burn backyard bushes
  4. Dig and clean up septic tank area
  5. Build new insert and cover
  6. Dig up overgrown area down the north side of house
  7. Dig up front garden
  8. Mow front yard
  9. Trim bushes blocking vision to driveway and road
  10. Clean up driveway and power wash
  11. Clean and paint entry railing and steps
  12. Weed the rhubarb patch and current bushes

lildebbieg 04-01-2015 11:29 AM

Hi all! Apologies for not checking in this past week! I've had a broken down fridge...then the hot water heater went...my daughter was home with a cold/fever...we have had appointments set up to have my daughter evaluated for possible learning disabilities...last night she started with an ear infection...more appointments today...my son's family birthday party...plus all the usual stuff...all that to say I've had little time for myself or anything else. It's weeks like this that have me feeling like I'm sinking! :p We were supposed to be away for the Easter long weekend...but all that has been cancelled. I guess on the bright side, it may be a quieter weekend than anticipated, so maybe I can actually dig into my new workout dvds finally! ;)

I'll try to catch up tomorrow...got run to pick my son up from scouts! :rolleyes: I have no idea how single parents cope!

episode2011 04-01-2015 01:06 PM

Jennifer: I'm not sure I understand your color coding system. Are red items things that didn't hit the mark whereas green items did hit the mark? Or is it alternating colors for every day? Because, it looks to me that you've been doing a great job hitting your marks! I don't envy you with the 400 eggs. I remember those days. You did well only losing a few bunnies. But really, they had to take one for the team, right?

Annette: Holy moley! With all that activity, you won't need to walk for exercise. I'm exhausted just reading your schedule. You are one hard-working woman, indeed!

Debbie: Isn't that the way it always happens? One appliance breaks down and the rest of them have sympathy-break-downs. So sorry to hear of your daughter's cold/fever/earache. Not fun at all (it's so difficult when the kiddos aren't feeling well). I hope they can come up with some good strategies for helping with learning. Sorry, too, to hear that you had to postpone your travel plans. With regard to the thread, no rush. You have your hands full right now!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As for me, I had an excellent Explore! day today. Bought and tried the matcha AND the quinoa.
The matcha was delightful. Tasted similar to my go-to green tea, but with an pleasant undertone/aftertaste I can't yet identify. It wasn't 100% matcha, which is powdered; it was a mixture of mostly matcha with a few green tea leaves. The only downside is it's sort of expensive. I bought it in bags (as opposed to loose) and I'll definitely finish the canister. I'll have only one a day, however, to make it last longer.
The quinoa was a different story. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't quite as tasty as I'd hoped. I suppose it'll be an acquired taste. I'll have it again (I have 3 more servings in the refrigerator), but if there was a contest between quinoa and, say, rice or mashed potatoes... To be fair, I may not have gotten the right quinoa. I bought a small pack because, well, because it was small. It was flavored with garlic and onion. It smelled great while cooking but the garlic and onion were a bit overpowering. In addition, this particular brand also had a high sodium content (320mg per serving). True, it's sea-salt, but it's still sodium. Had I done more research beforehand, I'd probably have purchased plain quinoa (sodium ~10mg).
In addition to taste-testing, I also did some research/reading today: I read an interesting article about a young woman whose obsession with nutrition and healthy eating took her to some dangerous (health) places. Not anorexia, but something called orthorexia. I never knew anything like that existed. Thank goodness, she's better now. On a MUCH lighter note, I also tried to find out WHY a butter pat is called a "pat" (I wasn't able to find a satisfactory answer). And I did a bit of digging on how, exactly, the Japanese Tea Ceremony is performed/conducted. Found lots of information -- fascinating!
Anyway, hope we all have a good goals/strategy/plan day today!
rosabella2012 04-01-2015 02:59 PM
Epixi: Quinoa isn't a favorite thing of mine, but I do like it better when I use either a veggie, beef or chicken broth. When I buy it, I buy the plain and then add garlic and other herbs to MY taste.
Annette: You are one busy lady! I couldn't keep up with you if I wanted to!
Debbie: I feel you on your breakdown of appliances and dealing with testing for learning disabilities of your child. Been there myself in the past.
Jennifer: If you lost only a few eggs and bunnies, you are indeed one to be applauded! I wouldn't even try it! I know I couldn't do it! Chocolate is a weakness of mine.
Lisa: Medicare and insurance can really be confusing at times. Just glad that it looks positive for you getting the treatment you seek!
Allergies still rampant--this morning my eyes were almost swollen shut. My eyelids are red and very itchy. I've bathed them in cool water several times today but they're still giving me fits. Allergy cream really stings! I had my eyebrows waxed yesterday but they aren't even sore. I told my hubby my eyelids must have thought I waxed them instead of my eyebrows! Vicki
JenniferP1 04-01-2015 04:08 PM
Ahhh -- everyone is sleeping. While the house is quiet, I am going to do a little catch up!
I don't have a color code system.....I had a few minutes today to get my information typed in. I had a little helper who thought I should use Christmas colors- - so that is what I did. I haven't gone back in to change it yet.
I have read the gummy reviews on Amazon. They are pretty funny. Last summer, we were in St. Louis and there were Haribo reps handing out sample packages. There were only 3 or 4 in a package but it still caused a lot of conversation and laughter from those who had read the Amazon reviews.
Annette your camp sounds really neat. I have never heard of anything like that. Good luck!!
Hope I am glad you feel the interview went well. I hope that the right job comes along for you.
Debbie-- hang in there!! It all seems to happen at once!
Thank you all for letting me join in on this motivation thread. It has only been a few days but it does motivate me.
AZLisaLou 04-01-2015 04:58 PM
Life is handing my family some tough, cruel blows that I don't know how we will survive. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go out and buy food.
:(
Update: I know that getting a shake wasn't going to help my situation, but it was the comfort I needed. But now I feel guilty that I did it, and the anxiety & depression is still there. It's the same thing every time, and you'd think I'd learn by now.
I'm stressed beyond belief.
episode2011 04-02-2015 03:39 AM
Lisa, I wish I could do more than just say, "Hang in there, it'll get better". Coping with depression and anxiety is tough enough without adding in outside stressors.
episode2011 04-02-2015 04:12 AM
Vicki: Thanks for the suggesting of using broth for quinoa. Hadn't thought of that. Sorry to hear about the seasonal allergies. I have them, too, although for the last several years, they haven't been too bad. I don't know why, but I'm not complaining. I heard pressing wet teabags on the eyes helps. I never tried it because, at the time I suffered with allergies, I wasn't a tea drinker. Now that I've become a tea drinker, I don't have the allergies. Go figure.
Jennifer: I'm so glad you decided to join us here on the thread -- the more, the merrier! And now I understand about the color scheme. Christmas colors -- cute! Gotta love those little helpers :).
My Strategy for the Week (March 30 - April 5):
  • 7-day Rolling Average calories = 1200-1300: 1328, 1328, 1313
  • 7-day Rolling Average water/tea, minimum 2500mL (10+ 8oz glasses): 3899, 3899, 3966
  • 7-day Rolling Average sodium = 1000-1500: 1340, 1335, 1404 <--- getting too close to upper limit for my comfort, rein it in now
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Sat-Fat = under 15g: 15, 15, 15 <---feels like I'll never get this one under control
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Fiber = 15g or greater: 23, 22, 18
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Net Carbs = under 130: 134, 138, 139 <---fiber and net carbs, the double whammy team of diet destruction :mad:
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Protein = 50-75g: 67, 66, 62
  • Explore! Try something new or do some nutrition-related research at least 2 times:
    • Monday: Did some research on batwings, since it looks like I'll probably have them for the rest of my life. *sigh*
    • Monday: Tried a new brand of (low sodium) jerky.
    • Wednesday: Bought and tried matcha (yum!) and quinoa (meh)
    • Wednesday: Read an article on orthorexia
    • Wednesday: Researched Japanese Tea Ceremony
    • Wednesday: Tried to find out why a butter pat is called a "pat" (no luck; I found a few theories, but I still don't know for sure)
Boosting fiber seems so at odds with keeping carbs low. Especially when I have to marry it all with things I actually *want* to eat (I'm so picky!). Take something as simple as an apple (oooo soooo healthy! :rolleyes:). It only offers 4g fiber and is bundled with 25g (!!!) carbs. Bah. This is so complicated. And let's not even talk about my other least fave nutrient, sat-fat.
Oh well, whatcha gonna do, right?
rosabella2012 04-02-2015 10:16 AM
After waking with more swelling around my eyes down onto my cheeks, I decided to go see my MD--I now have 'pink eye'! I've lived for 56 years and this is the first time I've ever had this. Mine is caused by allergies, so it isn't contagious--which is good, since company's coming for the Easter holiday!
My MD was pleased with my weight loss of 83 pounds since my last visit. I also found out that my MD's scales weigh me 1# less than my home scales do.
Summer is here in LA--87 degrees! So glad for the light breeze and low humidity! Vicki
I'm soooooo far off track again that I can't even see the rails!! So glad the new challenge is starting Monday because I need a do over. I completely failed at my own Easter Challenge. Planning to turn things around....yet again...sigh
episode2011 04-02-2015 05:13 PM
Vicki: Gah, pink eye! I got it once as an adult, too (mid-40s, if I recall correctly). How did we skate though our childhoods without getting it? And if it's so miserable for us, just imagine how bad it is for the kiddos. On the positive side, 83 pounds?!? I had no idea -- that's awesome!
Debbie: Don't sweat it! You've been doing really well. Suddenly, you have a lot going on and I'm sure your priorities have shifted, at least temporarily. Totally understandable.
My Strategy for the Week (March 30 - April 5):
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Sat-Fat = under 15g: 15, 15, 15, 14 <--- BOOYAH!!! First time ever under 15! (Hehe probably won't last :))
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Fiber = 15g or greater: 23, 22, 18, 15 <--- eek, just *barely* hanging on...
  • Extra Credit -- 7-day Rolling Average Net Carbs = under 130: 134, 138, 139, 136
    • Thursday: Read a scary article about a man who developed kidney stones. It is suspected the stones developed because he drank too much TEA. Great :rolleyes:. Now that I've adopted the tea lifestyle (it's so healthy!!!), someone finds a gotcha about it. As Roseanne Roseannadanna would say, "It's always somethin'".
Pretty uneventful nutrition day. Can't complain.
Message to Self:
Today will be better. Better outlook, better eating. Life knocks that "hit like a bitch" (thank you Debbie) will not keep me down. I am a survivor. I am a fighter.
A good thing I did today was schedule an initial consult with a Lap Band doctor for next Wednesday. I'm looking forward to hearing what he has to say.
Food hasn't been great. My weight is creeping upward. I think a lot of it is sodium and water weight, but a lot of it too is coming from soda. I haven't been tracking my calories or weighing and measuring my food. Need to get back into some good habits.
Have a happy day.
LHall1965 04-03-2015 07:22 AM
Rough week here. So glad March is gone and so far April has brought better weather. Made some poor decisions this week - was a Birthday for one of the girls at work and they got a cake ( one of my favorites) and it was in the office all week. I managed to maintain only by not eating dinner as I had used up all my calories for two days. Not the best choices.
Hope- those jobs sound so interesting. I think it would be fun to be a tour guide but it would be a lot of walking and talking.
Lisa- that is super great news about the insurance. Hang in there. Hopefully talking to someone will help. Stress is one of my triggers also to crave comfort foods.
Epixi - so glad you tried quinoa. You always find such interesting things to research. I also like tea cold with lemon. Would Match be good cold?
Jennifer- glad you had some fun while filling all those eggs. I'm not a chocolate fan- but love the jelly beans. If I was surrounded by them, I'm sure more than a few would have escaped- lol
Annette- my you have some work planned- you would not need to walk after doing all those chores. I love to be outside and doing things in the yard.
Vicki - so sorry to hear about the pink eye. I have had eye allergies and they are no fun. Hope you get some relief.
Debbie- so sorry you had such an trying week. When it rains it pours. I hope your daughter is feeling better. Great quote - get right back up!
Going up to our club tonight and then planning on spending some time outside if weather cooperates this weekend.
episode2011 04-03-2015 12:54 PM
Lynda: I sometimes let my regular green tea sit around so long it becomes cold and I think it tastes just fine. I was actually planning to make iced green tea on purpose sometime in the near future. No lemon needed, by the way -- it's fine with just some sweetener. Given that matcha tastes somewhat similar to the regular green tea, I imagine it would be good cold, too.
I'm cooking and cleaning--getting ready for tomorrow! For the Easter challenge, I lost 22.8 pounds--while it's not the 23.6 I wanted, it is only 0.8 pounds above it. I'm a happy girl right now! Vicki
Vicki that's excellent!!!! What a fantastic job you did!!!
Well, I have an appt for a Lap Band consult with the dr., but when I told Jeff about it he said I can't go. He said unless it's covered 100% then I can't have it done. I realize very much that we're not in a position to spend money. At the same time, I don't think he realizes how much it's going to cost me during my lifetime with illnesses, complications, medications, and a shorter life. They told me that it would cost out of pocket $1600-1800. I could put it on my credit card and make payments. I guess I'll just have to wait if he gets back to work or not and if his insurance will be back on to pick up what medicare doesn't cover.
Also, as I was watching "My 600lb Life" the other day, I noticed that whenever they start out with exercising they always use hand weights just to get some muscles moving. I bought a set of hand weights that are just collecting dust, so maybe I should pull those out and try to tone up my arms a little while I'm watching tv at least.
Another thing is that I realized with our Roku we have a Yoga channel. I'm going to check that out. I also have 2 yoga mats that I bought with very good intentions over a year ago. I'm thinking I might get one out and try the yoga.
Hope everyone is having a happy weekend.
episode2011 04-04-2015 03:51 PM
Lisa: Sorry to hear you may have to postpone the surgery, but at least you have the information you need. Good idea about using the handweights during TV viewing. And lucky you with the Yoga Channel!
Well, my numbers may have been different/worse had I gotten in earlier tonight. As it was, I got back at 10ish. I had already had dinner, but was sort of craving a little nosh. But I said to myself, Epi, are you actually hungry? Or do you just want something to chomp on? I realized I honestly didn't need a full-blown snack, so I settled for some (sugar-free) gum. Sweet-tooth appeased, desire to chew something appeased. Calories and other nutrients are happy/unaffected. And that makes me happy with my decision.
EDIT: I typically allow myself to have what I call a "delicious decadence" (otherwise known as a little sweet snack) every evening, PROVIDED my daily calorie count is within appropriate limits. I build it into my daily calories. Tonight, I was already at the daily calorie limit border AND it was rather late and the sweet would have pushed my daily calories over what I have determined is my acceptable limit. That's why I'm proud that I decided to forego the treat for tonight.
I hope the scale is happy on Monday...
AZLisaLou 04-04-2015 08:58 PM
Epi, good for you for recognizing your personal limits and sticking to it.
Everyone, I honestly don't mean to complain so much. I've just been on such a roller coaster, twists and turns, ups and downs...and whatever else it may be called. I'm bummed, yes, but there is a time for everything. It's just not my time yet to move forward with getting more info on the Lap Band. It's just delayed.
Jeff suddenly and unexpectedly got laid off again after not even 3 full weeks of working. That has taken it's toll on me too.
A lot of stuff has been happening that typically drives me to comfort food. Which leads me to...
In the meantime, I looked up several psychologists online through Medicare to look into who could possibly help me address my eating addiction and it's underlying causes. I emotionally eat, yes, but I don't always know why. Hopefully I'll find someone who can help me.
So, I'm sorry for being a "Negative Nate" as my husband would say. I just wish the craziness would stop. I'm crazy enough as it is...I don't need more help! lol
Looking forward to doing my best in the next challenge.
episode2011 04-05-2015 02:02 PM
Lisa: We all need someplace to let it all out. Some people let it all out to friends and relatives, but often, that runs the risk of altering relationships. Others let it out to therapists, but that can be prohibitively costly. Still others try to keep it inside and it ends up eating them up (or they try to eat it, drink it, smoke it or drug it away). The point is, everyone needs a "safe place". I think these boards are a good "safe place", especially this board. One of the reasons is because of the anonymity afforded by the internet. The folks who frequent this particular board tend to be compassionate and empathetic. Sharing here allows one to let it out without running the risk of altering or perhaps even permanently damaging personal relationships. In short, I suppose what I'm saying is this can be one of your safe places, if that's what you want or need. (I hope I don't sound too Pollyana-ish.)
Basically, it's healthier to let it out than to keep it in.
And I'm glad you're looking forward to the next challenge :). Good luck!
Long Post
Monday I started exercising and things got crazy. Despite eating right, sticking with my plan it raised my BS to 174, made it difficult for me to sleep that night and then caused me to oversleep Tuesday morning. Despite sleeping longer than I have in weeks I woke up exhausted.
However on the bright side my fasting blood glucose was was a bit better than it typically is. But by 1pm I was too exhausted to stay awake, had to take a nap, which is something I have very rarely ever done in my life, and wound up sleeping six hours!
So on Tuesday I decided to walk for the same amount of time but at a slower pace taking a less challenging route. Which caused my BS to soar to 183. It was so demoralizing. Too make matters even worse about an hour later I became ravenously hungry but didn't want to eat because my BS was still 150 something.
I waited, and waited, and waited but finally I didn't care if I had any calories left over for the day or not I had to eat. I chose foods that put me over calorie wise but didn't add on a bunch of carbs. Then I worried my BS was going to be horrible in the morning because of the late night extra food.
However surprisingly again my morning numbers were a little better than they typically are. Unfortunately it did not last, despite careful eating and sticking to my plan my BS shot up in the afternoon. AUGHHHH!!! I felt so punished. I know that's silly but still that's how I felt.
Anyway the good news though is what I didn't do in response to that - eat. Instead I read a bunch online, made a game plan and today was great. Instead of exercising once a day by walking briskly, doing a mile and a half in under 30 minutes (okay slow but that's brisk for me fat as I am) at night after my last meal, I'm now taking my blood sugar, waiting an hour, then walking for 15 minutes at a comfortable pace.
When I come back I wait and hour, check my blood sugar. Then I spend 15 minutes preparing my meal, eat and take my BS two hours after the start of my meal. I did this three times today evenly spaced out and my numbers were so improved -
Fasting blood glucose 124
1 hour after exercise 142
2 hours after meal 132
1 hour after exercise 99
2 hours after meal 118
1 hour after exercise 112
2 hours after meal 98
Calories consumed 1346
Carbs 20
These are my best numbers since March 31st ! It's still too early for me to tell if it's a fluke or not but I'm so encouraged by these numbers I'm going to continue. Anyhow sorry about rambling on but I'm just really excited about today. Weird thing though, I'm up like 0.3 lbs. However I did drink 84 oz. of plain water yesterday plus had a 14 oz mug of coffee, water and half and half mix.
Episode2011 – I've messed up on a custom food too it’s very frustrating but fortunately we both caught it! I don't care for quinoa when eaten plain, even when it’s cooked in broth, but back when I was doing more carbs I had better luck baking with it. One time I added some to muffins and they came out pretty good. Another time unable to finish some that I'd cooked in broth, I wound up dumping it in some stuffing I was making. The stuffing seasoning and bread helped disguise the taste and texture of the quinoa and the quinoa made the stuffing stretch further and helped give a better nutritional profile to the dish. I just did a google search online for recipes to get ideas. It’s I think a lot more palatable mixed into things than by itself as a standalone dish.
