When it comes to kidney disease, diet is an important subject of discussion. And with one of my friends now diagnosed with CKD, I’ve experienced first-hand the significance of screening even the staples of our diet. The one that arises often: Can I drink low-fat milk if I have kidney disease?
  • Low-fat milk contains many valuable nutrients, such as calcium, vitamin D, and protein. It’s a daily breakfast for most of us. But if kidney function deteriorates, the diet should be strictly monitored — especially phosphorus and potassium, minerals that interfere with kidney health.

    Kidney patients have too much phosphorus in their blood, and this accumulates over time in their bones and hearts. Even low-fat milk has reduced amounts of fat but still has lots of phosphorus and potassium. This can be problematic for people with CKD because their kidneys may not filter out the minerals properly. If this is the case, phosphorus in excess denatures bones, and potassium in excess may lead to heart problems.

    But it’s not one-size-fits-all. Promptly, having been the supporter of my friend in her quest, limits, and portion control became the rules. Their nephrologist suggested they switched to phosphorus binders to regulate their consumption, while still consuming low-fat milk in small amounts. Other experts also use alternatives to milk such as almond milk which has less phosphorus and potassium.

    Low-fat milk is still a healthy food for patients with early kidney disease as long as consumption is monitored carefully and supplemented with support from a doctor or dietitian.
