Default Lumpy dumplings

I make a killer chicken and dumplings dinner with one exception, dumplings. My dumplings are a hit or miss addition. Sometimes they are amazing and sometimes they look and taste like lumps. I don't measure and maybe that's my problem. I use flour and milk only. What's the secret to making light and fluffy dumplings?

I'm the Austin roofer but part time cooker as well. Here is my answer to make your Dumplings tasty.
1- Use Bake powder and salt
2- Use beaten egg as well
3- Combine Flour and baking powder with salt
4- Combine egg and milk.

Proportions are very important. When I cook, for example, I measure in grams.
