Request: Would like tracking of sugar
Would anyone else like to see the sugar content in foods?
|
Definitely. Actually, I'm much more concerned about sugar than fat.
|
Yes! I think it's pretty horrible that it's not a current feature, as it is on every single other tracking program out there. I just don't see how that could have been left out??

sugar content in foods
I think it's absolutely scandelous how our government has allowed the food industry to put sugar in almost EVERYTHING. I'm sorry, but in my opinion, salad dressing and the like doesn't need to have sugar in it. Even the cole slaw at the different chicken and fish fast food joints have sugar as one of the main ingredients. You almost can't find a breakfast cereal that doesn't have sugar as one of the main ingredients. What's up with all the sugar? It's so unhealthy. No wonder we're a nation of overweight diabetics... It's shameful.

Sugar
the amount of sugar you take in daily is an important part of losing weight and is included in Nutrition facts yet there is no way to enter it on a custom food or track it in your food log. all you can do is add sugar as a food but thats not very helpful. please add sugar tracking. thank you.

Sugar content
I am very curious... why leave out the sugar content of the food items for the free version? Or, am I just not seeing it?!?!?
|
sugar catagory would be useful
I have the same question as you.
I don't know how to get the answer. There are a few more similar queries / comments in the software discussion group but I did not see any helpful info. |
Thanks for your reply. I hope someone who knows replies to our concern. It seems very weird for them not to have something such as sugar. I have been looking up foods on nutritiondata since I wish to know the sugar content.
If I find out anything I will let you know. |
Alcohol
Hi Everyone,
I am new here and have what may be a stupid question but....... when logging my foods it list "alcohol". What is that? Since there is no place for sugar I am assuming that's what it is. Can anyone explain. |
FD doesn't have a listing for sugar because it assumes that "Total Carb" - "Fiber" = "Sugar," so it doesn't need to have a separate box for that.
Alcohol is what you think it is, like alcohol in margaritas and beer. Most foods won't have it, unless you make rumcake or vodka-based pasta sauce or something like that. |
First of all, thank you nik for posting on my other thread. I can already see you are an incredibly helpful presence on these forums. Secondly, can I piggyback on this question?
I'm confused by the calorie pie chart. Today I had about 1500 calories. In the evening I had 3 drinks with friends: 2 margaritas and a beer. The margaritas had a combined alcohol content of about 35g (determined by the listing of a margarita on this site) and I had to calculate the grams of alcohol in my guinness by taking the full amount of beer (14.9 ounces), converting it to grams, and then using the percentage of alcohol (4%) which gave me about 20g of alcohol (not sure if that's exact but roughly). Now the pie chart says that 25% of my caloric intake today was from alcohol??? Is this true?? Because alcohol definitely wasn't 25% of what I consumed today.. I ate several times and like I said, had about 1500 calories which was mostly not from the drinks. Just curious. |
Calories-wise, alcohol has about 7kcal/gram, whereas fat has 9, and carbs and protein each have about 4. So, (35 + 20)*7 = 385 calories from alcohol. If you're having about 1500 calories a day that translates to about 25% of total calories from alcohol. So yes! Those drinks can sneak up fast! Plus, beer contains a lot of starch and cocktails plenty of sugar, so they'll add carbs in addition to the alcohol! :(
|
Yikes!! It was hard to grasp, since it doesn't seem like alcohol GIVES you energy.. it very much does the opposite... at least to me! :) Well, thanks for the validation. That's a wake-up call. Beer is just one of the many starchy foods I adore and will have to cut down on. If I ate what I wanted all the time I'd probably be at 90% carbs if not 100%!!
|
So, in light of these postings, do you add the alcohol % of calories to the carb % to get total % of calories from carbs? I think you do because alcohol is a type of sugar - right?
|
Alcohol is not a type of sugar. You can have sugar alcohols that are a type of carb (technically, they are sugar molecules that are missing one carbon atom and one hydrogen atom), but the alcohol in beer, wine, and hard liquor is a completely different chemical. So that's why it becomes the fourth wedge in your fitday pie chart.
Hope this helps. |
plain and simple if the only thing your worried about is losing weight it doesnt matter how much you drink as long as you burn more calories than you take in between the food and the alcohol.... being healthy is a different story..

Tracking Sugar?
Does anyone know why they don't have a space to enter sugar when creating a custom food? Or is there a place that I am not seeing?
Thanks! |
I don't think there is but I'm relatively new to this website so I may be wrong.
|
Thx VSabino!
I will try and email the admin of the site or something. |

I emailed the website. No response as of yet.
I will let you know as soon as I hear anything. Thx! |
long standing problem
Hi all,
The inability to log sugar has been an issue for quite a while. I am not sure why. I know that there have been a couple of changes (albiet minor) to the website in the last few months so someone is still monitoring it somewhat. I think for the time-being we'll just have to keep track of sugars the old fashioned way. |
Tracking Sugar Intake
I am really interested in tracking my sugar intake but can not figure out how to do this on FitDay. Is this possible?
|
Not sure exactly what you are asking..

the sugar index is part of every food you eat, but sugar can be defined in many ways. Im a diabetic and take my sugar reading three times a day. If its between 80 and 120 I am good. |
I understand what you are looking for. I love Fitday, but recently I discovered [link removed], which has sugar in their breakdown. It tracks the total grams of sugar through the day, along w/protein, carbs, fat, fiber and calories. Fitday is so much easier to understand, but no sugar in the mix. You are looking for total sugar grams in the products. I have been using the other program since the beginning of the month, but I always come back to Fitday, first, because it is easy to use, and I like the way the reports are shown, and two, I have so many custom products in here, I really don't want to switch.

Alcohol
Sorry if this has been posted before, but I don't know what the nutritional part means when it says ALCOHOL. Is this referring to the sugar content?
Thanks... |
"Alcohol" refers to the kind that gets you drunk. As far as I know, FitDay does not track sugar at all.
|
Hello, I'm new to fitday also, but I think alcohol refers to wine, beer, etc. A way to test it would be to add a food w/ high sugar and no alcohol to your food log and see if the alcohol % changes, then add a glass of wine and see what happens.
|
It also refers to sugar alcohols, such as are used in some low-carb bars, etc. Supposedly, you can deduct sugar alcohol the same as fiber when figuring out net carbs.
|
Does alcohol mean sugar on this site?
Hi I am a newbie ... just wanting to make sure if I am correct in interpreting alcohol to mean the same as sugar on a food label
|
it's a sugar alcohol, not like regular sugar.
|
The slot on fitday for alcohol is meant for the stuff that gets you drunk in beer, wine, and liquor. For whatever reason, fitday doesn't have a slot for sugar like the nutrition label does.

Sugar alcohols are supposed to be noncaloric, so it doesn't make sense that they would contribute to the calorie load on your FD pie chart. I'm pretty sure the FD slot for alcohol is for ethanol; if you back-calculate from the pie chart percentage you get for a peg of whiskey, it works out to about 7 calories per gram, which is about right for ethanol.

Alcohol
When adding the nutritional value for a personal food, is "alcohol" the same as "sugar(s)"?
 |
Nope, alcohol is alcohol (hic!) :D
Really, though, there is no "sugar" category in FitDay--it treats all carbs the same. Anytime you see alcohol it is for real alcohol. Regards, Michael |
Excellent! Thank you Michael! I appreciate your quick .. and informative .. reply!

Sugars
So when make a custom food where do you record the sugar grams?
