Here is a list of little pick-me-ups. It's kind of long, but a good read anyway!

Tips to get you motivated to run

It's finally warmed up enough that I can do my runs after work outside. I need to train myself into just doing rather than thinking about doing it. If I let myself think about going I usually talk myself out of it!

Thanks for asking

I have had a couple since the last time I posted.

5K race -- time was 25:53 -- 585th place out of 1844 runners. My split for the last mile was 7:20 -- I was real happy with that.

10K race -- time was 56:32 -- 12th place out of 24 runners. This was crazy as the weather was pouring rain with 40 to 50 mph winds. Most runners were not crazy enough to even show up.

Half Marathon this sunday

I very literally just started running... yesterday. My endurance is crap I didn't realize how out of shape I am!

I hope to be able to run a half-marathon, eventually but I'm trying to keep my goals realistic and stay motivated.

What did you all do to build endurance?

If I was you be happy running a mile a day. If you have to walk part of the way -- walk. There is no shame in that. Master being able to run a mile first.

When you walk though -- give yourself a period of walking -- say 45 seconds. And when the 45 second is through push yourself to start running again.

Be consistent about going out and running.

These two things will build up the two components of running -- the body and the mind.

A 7:20 split - that's great, you deserve to be happy. I am afraid that I would be like most of the runners on you 2nd race - sounded like a good day for a leisurely brunch.

I am thinking about running the 15 mile Holcomb Valley race in the San Bernardino Mts. It is a trail run and a real killer - but with georgeous views that would take your breath away if it wasn't already gone because of the 3 miles uphill at 7000 feet that started the race. I did it last year and loved it... a week later. It totally blew out my lungs and my legs weren't much better. The race is in June so I have a couple months to train, but it sells out early so I need to register ASAP

Mandab, EMS, like Skypilot says, consistency is the key. One of the tricks I like is to set out a course that's a mile longer than you are ready to run. On the first time out run the distance you feel comfortable running and walk the rest so you know the course. On the next run, see if you can run just a little farther. Don't blow it out, just find a landmark like the next corner or great shade tree that's a bit further (like 100 yards/meters) than last time. Each run go a little further and before you know it you will need to set up a new. longer course.

You will probably be a little sore the next day - that's OK, but if your legs really feel like lead, or you have trouble catching your breath after several runs on a course that wasn't too hard before, rest for an extra day. Your body may just need a little time to build the muscle and blood cells to sustain the endeavor.

I hope you catch the running bug!
Good luck on your half-mara, Skipilot!

Hi EMS,

Great that you have committed to a half marathon. I have attached a running schedule for beginners training for a half marathon. It takes you up gently and doesn't even mention speed, just distance. I found it to be a great way to train the first time I did a half. Good luck to you!

Default Running Pains :(

Hi everyone!

I started running about 2 months ago. Since I live in MN it's only been on treadmills until recently. I suddenly started having pain in the bottom of my foot when I run. I feels like the tendon going along the bottom is going to snap and there is severe pain.

I've tried looking it up online but I'm getting very mixed info. Anyone else experienced this? Is there anything I can do to help it? I've taken some days off and got inserts in my shoes, but it's still not completely healed. I'm open to any suggestions to stop this pain.

Thanks! I've learned a lot from this thread.
