Like everything else, the scale is a tool. Be smart about how you use it in terms of what works for you. Some people prefer to weigh weekly or daily in order to catch tiny creep-ups that could be out of hand by the time a month goes by.

Everything about this process is trial and error and very individual. It is great to share what works for you, but keep in mind that everyone is different.

I understand that everyone is different, but I think its safe to say that most people either are scale obsessed or were at one time. I've seen many, many people have weekly weigh-ins and be so distraught over the number. That's why I mentioned measuring. Even taking a picture of yourself can show results way before the scale. And a picture doesn't lie.

Hi Ramiah,

Personally, I don't think anyone should weigh themselves daily. Body weight fluctuates constantly, so it would be a false reading. But truly, if you are eating properly and exercising (and getting enough water), you will lose the weight. The "sane" times to weigh yourself vary from person to person. For me, this is my first week. I started yesterday. So, next Monday, I will weigh myself. Then, I will wait 4 weeks until I weigh myself again. For me, seeing a nice size number at the end of the month motivates me.

Like I stated above, there are other ways to base weight loss other than the scale. Measuring, taking a photo monthly and even feeling when you clothes become loose - all show progress - and sometimes faster than the scale will show.

Don't let one cookie and a bad number on the scale deter you from continuing your weight loss journey. You just started. Let your body get used to the changes that you are implementing. It's like any bad habit - it will take some time to change things around. Be patient and keep working hard! You can succeed!

i can see both sides of the issue. can we get to caught up on the number on the scale. we sure can. in saying that i think it's very important to also focus on non-scale victories. like you said measurements going down, clothes feeling bigger, taking that pic once a month, saying no to some tempting treat, increasing your exercise, i don't like to be so focused on what the scale says either, but i do use it as a guide.

the scale is just a tool to tell you your current weight. Some people like to track their weight daily other don't, it doesn't matter, do what you are comfortable with. If you track your weight every day, and even every hour you'll get to see how your body changes over time.
For instance I will weight more on a wednesday than I do on the monday, yet by the weekend I'll be down again to last weeks low. On sunday morning I'll be at minimum weight for the week (hopefully). The variation is the order of 4 pounds or so. I plot it all in excel !

Default The scale is not the problem.

For those obsessed with frequent weigh-ins - who feel panic when they can't step on the scale, or feel a sense of self-loathing because of that number they saw - the problem is not the scale. It's feeling they have no control and MUST see that number in order to validate or manipulate themselves.

It's their attachment to it and what drives them to (believe they) need it.

I know first hand how this works. It's taken me a long time and a good amount of therapy to get over it. It's much more about our feelings of worth as lovable people than it is about the number. We use it to hide behind.

I remember the first time my therapist suggested I stop weighing myself. She wasn't just suggesting I step on less often, she was saying "so, throw out your scale." What would happen? Will the world come to an end? It took me a while to wrap my head around a life where I didn't fixate on that anymore.

I can weigh every day now, if I want to. But I don't. That number doesn't matter as much as doing what I need to feel good and be healthy. For some folks, that can include daily weighing. But it's different things for different people.

The way I look at it, weighing yourself only once per month is not an accurate way to keep track, since your weight fluctuates daily (mine is usually 3 lbs + or - ). I think it's more accurate to weigh yourself a number of times and have an idea of the average. I usually get on the scale in the morning, but I wouldn't say I'm "obsessed" about it -- the batteries in my scale actually just died a few days ago, and I wasn't running out immediately to get new batteries or anything like that.

It is definitely a great idea to measure your body, though - I wish I had started doing that when I was at my heaviest/most out of shape, because I'm sure the numbers there would have been impressive.

I weigh myself every morning at the same time. I keep in mind there wll be some fluctuations, but it keeps me honest and on track.
