Aleve makes you heavier?

So, at work the other day, my hands hurt something fierce. I popped some alieve, thinking, "Sure, why not?" Then I went to the beach, swam all day, got some sunburn, had a lot of fun. We're broke, so we brought our own food, so no splurging there! The next day, I get on the scale and...I'm 5 lbs heavier. I kept weighing myself, and there it was, this random 5 lbs. So I went into work yesterday and asked my boss about it (I work in a pharmacy). Alieve can make you hold onto water for about 3-5 days apparently. Weird much? Anything with naproxen will do the same thing.

Wow, that's crazy! I don't feel so bad now b/c I was hitting the Aleve hard up until I got my epidural the other day.

oh, yea, how did that go?

01gt4.6 07-16-2011 05:23 AM

Oh it went fine, thanks. I ended up getting 2 shots in my back. No pain in my ass for leg but my lower back has been a little sore. I just think that's from the needle.

That's good to know. I've been on it pretty regularly due to issues with my shoulder. I'll switch to acetominophen and see if that makes any difference; could explain why I kept popping upward on the scale even though my diet and exercise were on track. Well, till Wednesday, anyway.

I never knew this about Aleve. Holy cow and I had been on it for my knee for quite a while. Hmmmm...explains a lot...

Thank you Azazelsfyre and thanks Cassie for piointing it out on the motivational thread.

You're welcome everyone, but I noticed the typo in the thread title, and all I have to say is,

"Yes, being alive does in fact, make you heavier! That is all."

I fixed the title but if you ever need to do it yourself it's easy. Just click to the right of the title (not on the title) and it'll highlight it and you can change whatever you want.

I do some generic Naproxen from time to time. I've not noticed the 5 lb. gain. If it causes some fluid retention, who cares, really? If it's not a fat gain, it will go away as quickly as it came. I'm sure there are countless chemicals that will encourage fluid retention. Just MHO, of course. :)

Regards,
Michael

I do understand this. I took my father to the Dr. the other day and he said for him to not take Aleve or any nsaids if he could help it because it can damage the kidneys. Granted he is 85 with many health conditions but it is possible to get kidney damage when young.
