Michelle, The short answer is 8 cups a day (spread out throughout the day). Non-caffeinated teas/drinks count. This doesn't take in to account how many vegetables/fruits you consume that can be high in water content. The best way to tell is checking the color of your urine. If it's relatively pale, you're hydrated. But some of us take vitamins/medications, which can discolor urine, so that method isn't foolproof.

My recommendation is to drink when you're thirsty, and if you think you should be drinking more, don't overdo it. As far as drinking water in and around exercise, I've outlined a few simple guidelines that will make sure you're well hydrated without hitting any extremes.

Yup, but this "rule" changes when I do long-distance running. It's not good to wait til your body lets you know you're thirsty. That's too late. You gotta drink constantly to hydrate.

There are many different opinions on how much water you should be drinking every day. Healthauthorities commonly recommend eight 8-ounce glasses, which equals about 2 liters, or half a gallon. This is called the 8×8 rule and is very easy to remember.
