What does 200 calories look like?
I saw this really interesting article/project that was done where ppl took photos of foods that equal 200 calories. I thought you all might be interested in seeing them as well.
What Does 200 Calories Look Like? |
That was an interesting project. Not only does 200 calories of one food not look like 200 calories of another food, but 100 grams of one food doesn't look like 100 grams of another food, too!

Some foods have significantly more Calories than others but what does the difference actually look like.
When you consider that an entire plate of broccoli contains the same number of Calories as a small spoonful of peanut butter, you might think twice the next time you decide what to eat. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average adult needs to consume about 2000 - 2500 Calories to maintain their weight. In other words, you have a fixed amount of Calories to "spend" each day; based on the information bellow, which would you eat? There was actually a diet (not too long ago) called the 'Picture Perfect Diet' by Dr. Howard Shapiro, in which foods were pictured and then compared using the same number of calories.
I remember reading the book and seeing a plate filled with fresh cut fruit adding up to very few calories compared to say, a cheese danish. The book was mainly visual, lots and lots of glossy pictures. I can see that there was a cookbook produced for it, too, although I have never looked at that. |
Knowing these counts and being able to fill up your plate with low calorie foods so you get lots of volume helps.
