Well, this has never happened before...

I take arthritis medication twice a day, typically I can barely reach the center of my shins. Two weeks ago, I could just barely touch my toes. Tonight, I was stretching, one leg straight, the other leg bent with my foot on my inner thigh. While stretching toward the bent leg, my forehead touched my knee!

cjohnson728 03-19-2010 12:59 AM

Go Lizzie!!

It's great that you're improving your flexibility! What progress; congratulations :).

I like the idea of a thread of "things that have never happened before"...

pattialbert 03-19-2010 01:02 AM

Wow..thats impressive!!!

Built 03-19-2010 01:18 AM

Congratulations on your progress in flexibility, Lizzie! Stretching is so good for us and I usually don't think about it unless I'm tight, so it's something I need to incorporate into my workouts on a more consistent basis. Thanks for the reminder!

I also like the thread topic you choose! Sometimes it's easy to overlook "firsts" or personal bests as we strive to improve our fitness or make more healthy choices. And we need to celebrate small and large victories.

So I'm celebrating:D

Today I did not want to work out. But...since I was at the gym and didn't work out yesterday, I took the body out on the floor and hoped the mind would follow. I tried an exercise I haven't attempted in at least 4 years because I sucked at it. For those of you that spend a lot of time at the gym, its a diagonal chin up using the smith machine bar set at waist level. My fantasy is to be able to do real chin ups, and I haven't reached that goal yet. This exercise is kind of like training wheels for chin-up wannabees. Well this time I didn't suck and completed 3 sets of eight. Glad I stepped out of my comfort zone.:)

cjohnson728 03-19-2010 02:55 AM

Awesome for you, Beth!

My firsts this week were actually feeling hipbones and making it to 13 side planks (been trying to add 1 each time to get to 15...geez those are hard for me!).

Sveva 03-19-2010 06:14 AM

YAY YOU! Way to go Lizzy! Congrats!

mandab1 03-19-2010 06:39 AM

Great job everyone!!!

Congrats Lizzy! That must have been an awesome surprise!

Built 03-19-2010 10:15 AM

Cassie: Congratulations on reaching #13 on side planks! Those are so good for your core. Great job!:D

almeeker 03-19-2010 12:09 PM

Way to go ladies!!!! 13 side planks? Wow I'm so jealous. I can do about 1 1/2 and then I need some aspirin. I can't even imagine touching my head to my knee cap, my boobs always get in the way. But maybe someday...

I had some firsts this week too. I bought some t-shirts in size medium. Okay they were men's shirts and they are still tighter than I usually wear them, but I can get them on and wear them in public without popping open the seams and getting myself arrested.

I also caught a guy checking out my behind? I catch guys all the time looking at my chest. I'm well endowed and it is what it is. But never once in all my days have I caught anyone checking out my fanny. I weigh nearly 200 pound, I'm clearly a fat girl. So the next time I'm near a mirror I give it a look just to see what there is to see. And guess what? All those many miles on the elliptical are um, starting to pay off. It's still a wide load to be sure, but sporting just a hint of booty-licious. Whoooo hoooooo!!

cjohnson728 03-19-2010 01:48 PM

LOL; wish I had enough to get in the way!

Medium shirts? Way to go! A medium is a medium, right?

I like this firsts thread. It's exciting to see how people are doing in way that's not tied to scale numbers.

Built 03-19-2010 10:56 PM

Almeeker: Congrats on the medium! Love hearing about all this progress and yes, Cassie, it is refreshing to read posts that don't have to do with scale weight (although I'm delighted for every pound of fat gone). But we are getting stronger bodies and cardiovascular systems, more flexible, and get to buy new clothes too! Yae us!!!

Lizzycritter 03-20-2010 12:18 AM

Way to go, all of us:) and gratz on getting your "booty-licious" on :p

I'm enjoying where this thread is going, let's keep it up!

DeathArrow 03-20-2010 01:42 AM

YAY FOR EVERYONE!! :)

I am so glad you guys could make your side planks, caught a guy checking your booty out, can fit into a size medium, and can stretch all the way, and didn't suck at the gym exercise.

Woo Hoo!!

Ilikechocolate 03-20-2010 07:23 PM

Awesome firsts ladies! I'm so proud of everyone.

I too like the idea of measuring progress without a number!

Mine this week was that I ran outside (2.5 miles!) and was not self conscious about how I looked. I just enjoyed having a better fitness level and the music that I was in to. It was a great feeling!

Built 03-20-2010 08:26 PM

Ilikechocolate: Isn't it odd that as we grow older we can begin to worry about how others see us, and what a prison that can be? Good for you to just enjoy running...very big deal! We could all learn from the 4 year olds out there who are totally involved in what they're doing and could care less about what anyone thinks.

cjohnson728 03-23-2010 03:41 PM

Just bumping this and the gratitude thread because I like them!

Jogged for 25 minutes straight last night; no walking. Definitely a first! Maybe not a big deal for you runners, but for me it's something I never would've said I could do :).

Oh, and for the first time, I weigh less than my driver's license says I do!

That's awesome!!! Hopefully some day I can say the same...
WTG!!

almeeker 03-23-2010 04:59 PM

Today when I stepped on the Wii Fit balance board, the little BMI needle did not go all the way to the top of the "obese" dial. It's a tiny smidge below that. And that my friends has never happened before. I also discovered that I'm no longer "mobidly obese", now I'm just "obese", since my BMI has dropped below 35. Whooo hoooo hoooo!!! I'm sure that I have been just "obese" before, but it's been long enough that it's like it never happened.

almeeker 03-23-2010 05:02 PM

Great job on the jogging, way to go!!! I'm cracking up over the driver's license thing, and curious as to what mine says now.... Now I'm thinking that when I get to my goal weight one of my rewards to myself should be a new driver's license photo. Ummm?

cjohnson728 03-23-2010 05:18 PM

Yay, al! Yes, I think a new pic would be in order. Here in backwards GA we can renew online for 10 years...so my pic looks nothing like I look now! Although my weight went way up and is now back down.

The 20's of BMI are beckoning to you...keep up the good work!

I just love these things that have never happened before :).

What a great first that was Almeeker! This is so cool to read and I've got a feeling we're going to be reading a lot of "firsts" for many of us!!

Cassie: 25 minutes without having to walk in between is a big milestone! I'm not a runner and usually need to slow it down after 5 minutes or so to replenish my oxygen. Thanks for the inspiration!

cjohnson728 03-23-2010 06:49 PM

Two words for you, Beth...

Go. Slow. :)

I can't even consider it running; more like a jog, like 4.5 mph. Again, it really helps to have my heart monitor so I know I'm in a good heart rate zone...not too light, not too hard.

Built 03-24-2010 01:29 AM

Will do. I HATE shin splints!

almeeker 03-24-2010 04:00 PM

This morning my 8 year old DD said to me "mom that shirt looks awful on you". Which totally caught me off guard because normally she doesn't say anything about clothes at all, and I like this shirt it's a lovely shade of peacock blue. So thinking I don't really want to know, I take the plunge and asked her "Why, what's wrong with this shirt?". Then she said "well it's just huge, it's a shirt for a big fat lady, and well you aren't fat anymore." :p Isn't she sweet?

cjohnson728 03-24-2010 06:49 PM

LOL...buy her whatever she wants, now, al!

It's awesome when other people notice!

I would but believe me, I can't afford it. Her Christmas list read like a Best Buy catalog, if you know what I mean. It was very nice having her tell me that I wasn't fat anymore. Especially since last week after I told her that I weighed less than daddy, her response was "Are you sure? 'Cause your butt is still way bigger!". Kids - you gotta love 'em.... Cause if you didn't they'd end up at the curb with a "FREE" sign stapled to their forehead.

Sveva 03-25-2010 03:04 AM

Aw Aren't kids sweet sometimes. They are so honest when it comes to that. Even my DS (who is 18) was showing his friends some old pictures and he found an old one of me and said "Look how much weight my mom lost! Isn't that awesome!" TOTALLY floored me!

Almeeker, enjoy your success! Good for you!:p

Soooo jealous I could just spit on the monitor. 20.04 WOW!! Very impressive.

Quinn: Lookin good girl!

Almeeker: LOL!!! You cracked me up when I read the "spit on my screen" comment! You are doing great and will get where you want to be, one day at a time. Wonderful sense of humor!

quinnesec 03-26-2010 02:52 AM

almeeker- I laughed so hard! Don't spit on your screen! LOL
If it makes you feel better, I was at 24 something 11 weeks ago. :)

cjohnson728 03-26-2010 03:06 PM

Great job on the BMI, Quinn! That rocks!! Okay, everyone, Quinn blows the curve...sigh ;).

I have a brand new body fat percentage this morning....21%. I started out on Jan 5 with 28%.

quinnesec 03-26-2010 04:47 PM

Cassie- That's awesome! :) Did you ever wonder where that 7% of body fat goes? lol

almeeker 03-26-2010 06:18 PM

NOOOOO that does not make me feel better. Eleven weeks ago my BMI was nearly double that, 43-44 or some such. I just crossed over from "Morbidly Obese" which is 35 or higher to just regular "Obese" at 34.99. I still just wanna spit... Congratulations anyway.

My new first is that I tucked my shirt into my pants today and then went out in public. I haven't done that since I don't know when.

quinnesec 03-26-2010 07:13 PM

almeeker- You're doing an awesome job of bringing your BMI down. 10 points in 11 weeks?! That's totally amazing! Congratulations. :)

And cudos on the shirt tuck. I'm sure that there are a lot more people than your daughter who are noticing the new you! ;)

Lizzycritter 03-27-2010 01:03 AM

I'm happy to report I can now do the forehead to the knee trick on BOTH sides :D And...I now need to wear a belt with my "skinny" jeans. WOOHOO!

cjohnson728 04-09-2010 03:47 PM

Bumpin' this thread...

...because I think it's time to focus on some progress. What little successes are you experiencing, that you have never been able to do/see/have before?

Mine are new dress pants in a size I've never seen and being able to jog/run two miles with no walking.

Who's next?? :)

Built 04-09-2010 11:44 PM

Okay, this is pretty superficial, but...I wore short workout shorts (not obscene:)) to the gym today for my workout and did not feel embarrassed. Haven't done that in a while. Not saying there's not room for improvement (there is!), but I didn't see much cellulite on the back of my thighs so I figured, wth (what the heck:)).

Workout wise, I'm still learning a new program style and am at the awkward stage of setting my weights at a high intensity for multiple, short sets without injuring myself. Lower body workouts are on target. Upper body workouts aren't there yet. I'll keep inching my way forward.

jacquelinepaterson 04-12-2010 12:08 AM

That's impressive....not to mention inspirational.....Way to go ladies...Keep it up!
And please keep posting. I need the incentive. Thanks

Lizzycritter 04-12-2010 12:42 AM

I'm on the last hole in my belt today, time to buy a new one or make new holes :)
