01gt4.6 08-22-2011 12:23 AM

Well my scale wasn't so nice this morning. I'm up 1 pound to 171.6! I hope that b/c I started breakfast at 3am, and I normally weigh on an empty stomach. Who knows? Any way that means that I have to drop 2.6 this week to hit my goal of 169 by August 29th. I don't see that happening but I'm going to give it hell, although I plan on enjoying the rest of my cheat day today. Cassie, #9? Tisk, tisk, tisk, just kidding.

quinnesec 08-22-2011 12:24 AM

I am SO in! I ate my way through the entire weekend and feel disgusting! I can't even think of a bad food that even sounds good anymore because I think I ate them all already.

Time to pull up the big girl panties and get motivated! I will not slack off this week!!!

1. Calories around 1200.
2. Walk nightly, weather permitting.
3. 64-96 oz. of water a day.
4. NO BREAD FOR ONE WEEK!
5. Grade your food choices for the day... be honest!

dlw1464 08-22-2011 12:25 AM

I need this as well! I did very well tracking foods and controlling my portions and then went coo coo over the weekend. Not going to weigh until tomorrow, I don't want to ruin my Monday. Goals for this week, stay focused, track everything, take care of myself, and get budget and menu figured out.

quinnesec 08-22-2011 12:26 AM

Hey Mike,

Packers and the Saints September 9th, Buddy!!! It's going to be a good one!

Not if the Saints continue to play as they have been. :( I think it's the 8th. I predict that it will be 24-21, Packers on top. Statistically the Saints will lose. I think the recent Superbowl winners always win the opening game when they are playing at home.

cjohnson728 08-22-2011 12:47 AM

Mike, it's only because I'm switching to another company for coverage.

Long story, but I'm joining a friend's practice one day a week and to make things easier, I am going with the company they use so I will be covered for the people I supervise there, and there's no reason for double coverage.

Thanks, Quinn...I forgot about the water. Need to go back and put that in.

I need to pick your brain about trails. We're going to start taking more advantage of doing that as opposed to walking through the neighborhood in anticipation of it cooling down some. Do you recommend any particular type of shoe? And what's the best way to make it a good workout? It seems to destroy the serenity to walk fast. Should I find more strenuous trails, or wear a pack? Stop every few hundred feet for some jumping jacks? It seems to be such good exercise for you; what's your advice?

Mern 08-22-2011 01:03 AM

Dlw, glad you joined us. :)

Not that "misery loves company" but I'm glad to have companions who need to start fresh today.

I have a blood test Thursday to monitor my blood sugar and to see how well my first 12 week attempt to reduce high cholesterol and high triglycerides through diet alone is working. I've been under my 25g carb limit and under my 300mg cholesterol target the whole 12 weeks. Saturated fat has been between 12 & 13% of total calories with a target of 12%. I'm really looking forward to my followup appointment Sept. 1 to get the test results. Am expecting my blood sugar to still be in the normal range (still down from pre-diabetic) and triglycerides and cholesterol numbers to be much improved. :)

This week's goals same as usual, but I'm going to TRY really hard to be GREEN all week.

Exercise 5 days
64 oz. water
Calorie limit 1600
Carbs less fiber limit 25g
5 servings veggies/fruits per day
Saturated fat limit 12% of total calories
Cholesterol limit 300mg
Track protein grams and %
Artificial sweetener limit 2 packets per day
Sugar free candy limit 2 miniature chocolates per day
Vitamin D & Fish oil daily

Hunny24 08-22-2011 01:06 AM

Well got myself some new running shoes last night and was going to try them out. But decided to eat some crappy food instead. :( At least I got off my butt and primed the bathroom I have been working on. But back at work today and will be working out at the gym on my lunch break. Hope everyone has a good Monday and stays on track!

quinnesec 08-22-2011 01:12 AM

Cassie,

My area is pretty mountainous, so our trails alone can provide a great cardio workout. If you are walking a flatter trail, I like to include a small weighted pack... a bottle of wine and lunch are a good start... just kidding! Trails should increase your heart rate to the same point at which you're comfortable running, etc. So, until you can figure that out, a heart rate monitor is a good idea at first.

Regular running shoes are not a good idea unless the trails are simple nature walks. I use trail hikers with ankle support in the Spring and Fall because muddy or wet conditions, in my area, could mean a 200 ft. fall! And a twisted ankle 4 miles from your car is never a good thing. In the summer when it's hot and dry, I use a trail shoe (like a light-weight running shoe with a moderately cleated bottom).

The trails that I enjoy the most are pretty rugged... lots of rocks to climb over, fallen trees, creeks and steep inclines which is where my workout comes in. If your region is flatter, you'll have to increase your distance or weight your pack. Once you get going, and the weather cools, you'll love the peacefulness it can provide. There's nothing quite like it. :)

...and remember... good socks!!! :D

Once I get you trail hiking, you can take a ride up here in the winter and I'll get you on my aluminum snow shoes... they're a killer!

Mern 08-22-2011 01:19 AM

Cassie, wishing you much happiness in your work with your friend's practice.

Ann, priming the bathroom is a good workout--well, for ME it would be, anyway. Best wishes this week. I have vowed to get back to the gym this week after a whole week away.

cjohnson728 08-22-2011 01:20 AM

Thanks, Quinn!

The trails very close to us are pretty flat and well maintained by volunteers and nat'l park service, etc., so I'll go further, take a pack on those and also intersperse more strenuous workouts on other days. They are very historical but at this point we know what the signs say so we don't stop to read everything. When we go to the N. Ga. mountains, that's a workout! I'll start keeping an eye out for some shoe sales :). Thanks for the thoughts!

Appreciate the wishes, Mern. I think it will be a good thing. I'm dealing with the administrivia today; what a pain!

Ann, enjoy your workout and your home improvement project!

Take care ladies and Mike :-) !
Angela

BTW -- FORGOT TO SAY THAT MY 80 MINUTE POWER WALK? I TOOOTTTTALLLLY Didn't want to do it, but i did it anyway!!! (BIDIA!!!) . Was really proud of myself because not only did I have to make myself do it, I had to say to my husband "go ahead and meet your friend for a beer, and I'll join you guys later, I have to walk." Which was really good because he wanted me to go with him because it was a friend/biz talk and I had to put my health first realizing that IF I GET HEALTHY, I CAN ATTEND SO MANY MORE OF HIS FUNCTIONS and support him because I won't be too embarrassed to be seen!!! Also -- stayed in calories at a BRUNCH!!! Was hard, but I did it.

almeeker 08-22-2011 01:23 AM

Morning everybody. I too need a fresh start. I got on the scale this morning and it was ugly, even worse I was up early and have now eaten breakfast twice. And I'm on my way back to the blueberry patch this morning, where I'll probably eat my body weight in free berries. Oh well, I've already got my workout taken care of and there's a bunch of leftover grilled zuchini for lunch. Hardly any calories in that stuff.

Healthy & Fitness Goals for the week:

1. Keep calories to 1,500 S-Th, 1,800 F&S.
2. 100 oz of water.
3. Exercise 7 hours.
4. Keep carbs to 50% or less.
5. Keep protein at 25% or higher.
6. 25 grams of fiber/daily.

Other goals:

1. Mani-pedi.
2. Take kids BTS shopping.
3. Housework, 30 min daily + 1 load of laundry.
4. Weed 4 hours in garden.
5. Buy wedding gift.
6. Finish alterations on SIL's dress and Justin's pants.

This is going to be a nutty week, my nephew is getting married on Saturday. That's one really good reason to stay focused this week, I need to squeeze my fat behind into that dress I bought. So I may or may not make my workout goal, because I don't know if I will have time to hit the gym on Saturday. We'll see.

canary52 08-22-2011 01:59 AM

wildbeanerz 08-22-2011 02:23 AM

Okay, here I am with my head hung low. I did very good on Saturday considering we had a birthday party/reunion to attend. But Sunday...OMG! That would be the definition of food porn overload if I were to list all of that! Sunday morning I was down to 283.4lbs and was super excited but today I am up to 285. Most of that has to be water I am sure from extra salt in the great foods that I ate yesterday. But I feel so crappy and sluggish and have a bit of a headache. I knew it wasn't going to be good but as I was spiraling out of control it seemed like watching a car accident. You knew what was coming but couldn't stop it.

Oh well! It is my first time that I did that in a long time and I am sure that those 2 lbs will come back off in the next two days or so. So I am taking the cheater way out and not logging today' weigh in. And I didn't log yesterday's fat fest either.

New week, time to restart!! :)

Health Goals...
1. 80 oz water daily
2. 500 calorie deficit daily
3. Walk 30 min on lunch unless it's raining
4. Min 30 min workout on hubby's work days

This weekend Goals...
1. Friday do all of housework
2. Saturday prep bathroom for painting (remove border)
3. Saturday/Sunday paint bathroom
4. Weed that garden!!

elegantone 08-22-2011 02:46 AM

Don't have time to put the goals in just at the moment off to take my mum for an appt.

You are not alone! A lot of this being food porn stars has been going around, myself included! But it's a new week and a new start. So let's do this!!!

Mern 08-22-2011 05:11 AM

On the run--helping my live-in GD dye her hair (yeah, we're bonding. :p) and then she and I are going to the gym.

Angela, one of the most admirable things here, I believe, is to really not want to do something and have that topped by an invitation to do something WAY more fun, then force yourself to do it. We all are so happy for and proud of anyone who comes here and posts "but I did it anyway." My hat is off to you, new pal! I like your accountability check in format.

Amy, blueberries are rich in antioxidents, aren't they? Grilled zucchini--yum! DH grilled the more dry pickling CUCUMBER last week next to the grilled onions and it was FABULOUS after a little of the onion juice accidentally ran into the cucumber and gave it a little added flavor. I told him to do that on purpose next time. Have fun with the BTS shopping. I've done a little with my grandkids. I'm rooting for you to feel and look great in that dress this weekend.

Hope, I'm rooting for you on your number 7.

elegantone, welcome. :) Nice, sensible goals!

April, my math says 1.6 lb. gain instead of 2. :p And I want to add that it likely IS mostly water. When I do that I don't change my officially recorded weight because water weight comes off more quickly anyway. AND, as you mentioned, today's the start of a whole new fresh week.

I told y'all that in order to force the voters to approve yet another increase in property taxes for a school levy, the school district cut bus transportation. Great news--found out just this morning that the intra-school transfer for my two youngest grandkids (back to the school in my attendance area that they went to through the 2010 school year) got approved on the basis of "undue hardship and financial burden of double gasoline expense on their senior citizen grandparents to drive the children to and from a school in a different attendance area." They only went to the school near their home one year, so already know the teachers and have many friends at the school in my attendance area. :) The transfer will save me over 650 driving miles per year, so I'm thrilled! They don't start school until Sept. 6.

cjohnson728 08-22-2011 05:16 AM

Wahoo! Score one for the senior citizens and undue hardship avoidance! Great news!

April, welcome to the pick-yourself-back-up-on-the-horse club.

Hope, did you seriously call us all food porn stars? Do I have to put that on my vita?

Mike, how's the rum cake? Or are you in a sugar coma?

canary52 08-22-2011 05:48 AM

Yes, Cassie, I did. :) But hey at least we got starring roles!!!

Mern, I am so glad you were saved the mileage (we won't tell `em how young you really are!)

cjohnson728 08-22-2011 06:15 AM

Hope, that reminds me...I've seen an advertisement on TV for a new show called "Big Sexy" or something like that. The tag line is "Once you go big, you'll never go twig."

I am not sure what it's about, what the message might be, but I'm having a processing glitch just thinking about it.

Almeeker, I saw your post on the other thread about your fridge being covered up. I was just thinking this weekend that you know you're older when the kids' artwork comes down and is replaced by illustrated PT exercises for you and your husband.

(Actually, I still have the artwork, the photos, and the report card...much to the teenager's chagrin!)

wildbeanerz 08-22-2011 06:47 AM

Thanks for the welcome to the pick-yourself-back-up club!

OMG Cassie...makes me think about a show full of 'chubby chasers'!

Amy...Grilled zuccini sounds delicious. I haven't had any zuccini yet this summer. I don't grow it but someone usually donates me a few. Not yet this year though.

Hope...LOL@ food porn stars...I had a leading role yesterday!

01gt4.6 08-22-2011 06:59 AM

Cassie, the rum cake is awesome. I think I've eaten about half of it. I just had a PB&J and a Reeses Blast, I feel sick. I think I'm done for the day.

Lizards13 08-22-2011 08:04 AM

Back from doing my daughterly duties.

Mern So pleased that you won't have to clock up those miles this year. I drive a lot and i know that this will mean less cash spent, less time wasted and less stress from being on the road. So great news all round.

Goals this week pretty simple
1. Stay around 1200 or less daily
2. More protein, less carbs
3. Some exercise daily.

Got my will sorted at last, it's not particularly complicated as I don't have a lot to divide up but i've just not wanted to think about it I guess. Done now.

I seem to have lost my ipod, it may have beeen taken in work and that really p****s me off. I'll have another good look round for it tomorrow. It was a present and had an inscription on it so that's what makes it worse.

Mern 08-22-2011 08:31 AM

Yeah, I had to laugh about the senior citizen hardship as far as DRIVING double the miles to the other elementary school. It truly IS double the miles to my grandkids' neighborhood elementary school, though, so it would be double the gas expense out of my social security check, which has already been reduced due to the Medicare premium now being deducted. I've been through and survived way harder stuff than that, but it IS nice to know that someone feels many seniors have "paid their dues" so are entitled to a perk now and then if the school district is willing to give them one. :D

almeeker 08-22-2011 12:42 PM

Healthy & Fitness Goals for the week:

1. Keep calories to 1,500 S-Th, 1,800 F&S. 1,500
2. 100 oz of water. Y
3. Exercise 7 hours. 70 min (total 1:10)
4. Keep carbs to 50% or less. 52% darn blueberries!
5. Keep protein at 25% or higher. 26%
6. 25 grams of fiber/daily. 41g
7. Calorie deficit of 3,500 for the week. -1,222

Other goals:

1. Mani-pedi. N
2. Take kids BTS shopping. N
3. Housework, 30 min daily + 1 load of laundry. Y
4. Weed 4 hours in garden. N
5. Buy wedding gift. N
6. Finish alterations on SIL's dress and Justin's pants. N

I did fairly well on health & fitness, less so on other stuff. The BTS shopping and the wedding gift will probably happen together in the same trip, hopefully if it rains, since I can't really work in the garden when it's raining or muddy. We went today to pick more blueberries, the kids and I together picked another 12 lbs for the freezer, which brings us to 21 quarts, so maybe in a few more trips we'll be able to start making some jam. The berries are probably at peak right now, so the picking is actually a lot of fun and pretty fast (well fast for blueberry picking anyway).

The middle DD started soccer today, she was totally pumped up, ran her little heart out. Coach has already learned her name, which is pretty amazing because all the little girls have either a blonde pony tail or a brown one and run past in a blur of pink and grass stain. Youngest DD starts Wed. She's pumped up too. And here's the best part, I found another mom that has the same issue I do on Wednesday nights, so we can ride share!!!! Whoo hooo hooooo. I hate it when I get double soccer booked, same night, same time, fields at opposite ends of town.

That's it, I'm getting myself a t-shirt that reads "food PORN STAR"

Lizard, sorry to hear about your ipod, that sucks, hopefully it will turn up. Congrats on the will. I don't think we've done any of that stuff since the first child was born. It's probably a good thing we don't really have much to inherit, or that might be ugly. It's a really good idea to take care of those things, because seriously no matter how much you might hate your heirs, probate is not something I would wish on my worst enemy, let alone the kids I happen to love. A friend of mine has been embroiled in a probate dispute for 6 years now. Her marriage has been on the rocks over it for most of that time. Her MIL was a piece of work.

Mern 08-22-2011 12:48 PM

I finally got back to the Y! Felt great to be back and was nice with live-in GD along on my guest pass. She's on the track team at her high school, so she ran at 6MPH while I walked at 2.4 LOL

Mern 08-22-2011 01:03 PM

Amy, great job today on your goals! I'm really happy you found a ride share for the girls' soccer when you have to be in two places at once. :)

Posting now so I will have to close down the kitchen:

64 oz. water 80
Calorie limit 1600 1368
Carbs less fiber limit 25g 24.5
5 servings veggies/fruits per day 6

Had a great day being back on track. It felt great to be back in control food-wise. I did miss my walk tonight partially because I ran out of time and partially because I pulled something in my back... again. It's getting dark early which also messes with my evening walks. Fall is coming... 48 degrees during the night last night and 80 during the day!

1. Calories around 1200. 1193
2. Walk nightly, weather permitting. No time tonight.
3. 64-96 oz. of water a day. Yes
4. NO BREAD FOR ONE WEEK! Yes
5. Grade your food choices for the day... be honest! B

quinnesec 08-22-2011 01:12 PM

Looks like we're all doing better food-wise! Hopefully we can hold it together for the rest of the week! :)

quinnesec 08-22-2011 01:27 PM

Lizzie,

I had "daughterly duties" as well today... appointments, shopping, etc. Had to dig deep to find my patience at times. Someone once told me that elderly people are a lot like 3 year olds; they have no patience and are not aware that some of the things that they say are entirely inappropriate, which is what I ran into today. I find myself increasingly having to apologize for things that my mom says to others and keep my mouth shut when her "observations" are directed toward me. I have to keep telling myself that it's not worth defending myself and to let the comments go. But at times, a good, hearty primal scream would feel pretty darn great. lol

01gt4.6 08-22-2011 01:51 PM

OMG WTF DID I DO???? I swear that I probably consumed 5,000-6,000 calories today, no joke. I ate 2/3 of the entire rum cake, that in itself is over 3600 calories! Then a Blast, PB&J, tortilla chips, salsa and for dinner I had hamburger steak, gravy and broccoli. What the?????

Speaking of rum cake, I found out the 14 year old took rum cake to school for breakfast. I had to tell her when I found out that you're not supposed to take rum cake to school! She said that it was really good but she didn't eat the juicy part because it makes her dizzy.

Quinn. Oh yes I know exactly what you mean. My mum has never been known for her diplomacy and it is definitely getting worse. She is also now very hard of hearing so speaks much louder. I don't think she has ever meant to be hurtful on purpose but sometimes her "observations" sting a lot. I have posted on my thread way back, the wedding outfit debacle which ended in me leaving the shop telling the assistants that I was obviously some sort of freak with a huge body and tiny head, which didn't suit anything ( mum's helpful comments). She has also been very supportive to me over the years and I love her to bits. One of my strategies when she goes over and over the same problem ( it's cats in her garden at present) is to go to her bedroom, bury my head in her pillow and yell. We used to have a scream pillow in our staff room which you'd use if a patient was particularly trying.

Mike. That rum cake sounds lethal lol. Be careful if you go out after eating, you don't want to be found drunk in charge of a pedometer.

Time for work, catch up later.

Well I am back from Scotland, which was kind of an adventure but also a total disaster food-wise. The Scots were very nice to me but Glasgow is not my favourite city in the world but it's people are really nice and I'm glad I went. I did see some very cool art so I am happy about that. I also attended a company party which took place on a boat. We went on a "cruise" along the River Clyde which quickly devolved into pure INSANITY! It started to rain really hard and the river became EXTREMELY turbulent! We were all gripping the sides of the boat, and getting knocked around like mice in a shoebox. I was feeling really sick and the Gilligan's Island theme was on a loop in my head. It was a 2-hour ride to the Isle of Bute, where we went to a pub and the people I was with insisted I try the local beer but I had already had a glass of wine, that I had to force myself to drink because it tasted like battery acid but I couldn't refuse their offer of beer because they were insisting so vehemently. Then we get back on this horrible boat and dinner is served. Guess what? We are having authentic fish n' chips, in other words acid reflux rolled up in newspaper. My stomach is still in turmoil!!!!!! The rest of the weekend was more of the same. Every meal worse than the last and the insisting I try this or that. I can't blame it all on the Scots though. I took the tartan ball and ran with it. I am so ashamed of myself! My only consolation is that I am not alone.

It was a very sad day for Canada yesterday. We lost a brave and inspiring politician (yes a politician, basically the only one I have ever thought had a kind soul.) His name was Jack Layton. He was the leader of the opposition to our conservative government and he left Canada with a parting letter which he wrote just two days before he died. His final words were, "Love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world." Whether you agreed with his politics or not, he was admired by everyone he met for his energy and the force of his personality.

So here I am, with my despair replaced with optimism, ready to have a FLAWLESS week!

MY GOALS:

1. Eat between 1200-1400 calories per day.
2. Exercise 6 times.
3. Take my vitamins.
4. Drink 1.5-2 litres of water per day.
5. Journal before I eat anything not on my plan. (Thanks Cassie I stole this from you.)
6. Achieve a 7000 calorie deficit for the week!

Have an awesome Tuesday, Everyone. I missed you all and am happy happy to be back!

I am not sure what it's about, what the message might be, but I'm having a processing glitch just thinking about it.

FOUND IT: Introducing Big Sexy: The reality TV series where models are fabulous, fashionable and strictly plus-sized | Mail Online

I'm having a processing glitch m'self on this one -- literally stopped reading to go find out more.

OMG. I'm going to sound like I have schizophrenia, but first of all, these women aren't just "curvy" three of the four of them easily have BMIs putting them in the "Obese" category. That said, it kills me that "plus size" models are usually size 14, which I do resent because at my BEST weight with a BMI of around 19.5, I still often wear a size 14 top in a HIGH QUALITY garment (because designer wear is cut smaller than Old Navy vanity sized 14s). Conversely, I get the whole concept that one of the last living allowable prejudices is fat-bashing. But then, I fat-bash myself because I AM NOT HAPPY this weigh (pun intended). And if I am true to myself, then I know that NO ONE puts the food in my mouth and no one keeps me on the couch when I should be up and moving. So I am equally P'O'd at the comments on the show that denegrate these women as mad "cookie and cake eaters" and then I am p'o'd at the women for not taking better care of themselves and sending ME a message of fat acceptance which is not GOOD for my body or me personally.

(I guess that's kind of what you mean about a processing glitch, Cassie?)

Okay -- commercial break over, back to reading others posts and thinking about SUPPORT and MENTAL WELLNESS and PHYSICAL WELLNESS :-)

MERN: Glad to hear about your better route for your grandchildren’s school! And I like your “close the kitchen” approach. I may add that to my goals in a few weeks! I always say this though – my kitchen doesn’t have a door and sits in the middle of my great room divided only by a bar area. It sucks, it’s really hard to “close it off”.

QUINN: You will be my first 3D visit – I don’t know where you live, but 48 and 80 degrees??? I am so jealous. Do you have any way to make your darker walks safer – reflective vests, special lights and safety pre-cautions? If you are in Northern Europe, then I know (having lived in Brighton with my now husband for a while) how debilitating the shorter days can be, but I invested a long time ago in some equipment to make night walks and runs safer. Of course, now that I’m in Florida, I don’t even remember what I used, but I remember that there was a BUNCH of gear out there. And speaking of your assessment of elderly people not really having a filter? I have to laugh. This summer, I am pitching my new business to an apartment full of seniors and one looks at me point blank, in front of my husband, and says “are you expecting or are you just heavy?” You would not believe how well I held up, but I immediately retired the empire waist blouse I was wearing and the comment haunts me when I catch myself in a mirror!!!

MIKE: I love that you are here and I am sorry to hear about your WTF did I DO day. Because I live by your “your excuses are making you fat” piece and remember when I was as MILLITANT about this as you and AGREE with you and know how you are feeling right now! All I can say is re-group and assess WHAT made you so crazy today that you let food win the negotiation. I am trying desperately to re-institute my no-negotiation with food mentality!!! As Stephen Gullo (fabulous weight loss physician) says “I’ve come to far in life to be pushed around by a cookie!” Insert Doritos for me, rum cake for you! However, it was your cheat day??? Do you even get to feel bad about that??? Isn’t that the purpose of a cheat day – to let go? (Cheat days aren’t part of my plan because I’m not near enough to my goals to incorporate one – nor do I think I can handle them!).

LIZZIE – we all should have a scream pillow!

ROSE: I loved this: Love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world. Thanks!

NOt posting my chart because I JUST LOST THE REST OF THIS REPLY AND ONLY HAD THE NOTES IN A WORD DOC!!!! SUMMARY: all yesterdays goals were met!!
