I want to know why they start you off with about 3,500 calories or more a day. i thought its about 2,000 a day if you want to stay your weight.

One of my Muay Thai coaches, who is also a personal trainer(with all the certs) suggests that you burn around 3000cal to maintain in good shape. I've been exercising 3-4 times per week(Thai boxing and related activity). Ive restricted myself to under 2000c per day and I am losing weight pretty well now. At first it was slow I started off at 245.5lbs and now I'm at 217.8lbs. Its a long way to my goal still, and the first few months showed little progress. I've now hit the 10lbs per month rate of loss though.

Anyways 3500c seems a lot to me. And a lot of other people have suggested that fitday over estimates caloric usage. I would just put yourself at sedentary lifestyle and work with that.
