Default Why do people avoid direct communication and “test” instead?

Why do some people avoid being direct and instead “test” others in conversations - like acting distant or unclear? Is it intentional, and what’s the reason behind this behavior?

This comes down to testing behavior psychology. People often avoid direct communication because it requires vulnerability and involves risk, so testing creates distance and feels safer. Sometimes they’re not even sure what they expect, so they observe reactions instead of explaining. Past negative experiences also push people toward indirect strategies. But testing has limits - it can cause confusion or be misunderstood. The best response is staying consistent, not overreacting, and focusing on clear communication and boundaries.
