Dealing with online threats: Seeking advice

Getting hit with online blackmail is something I never thought I’d deal with, but here I am. A few days ago, someone messaged me, claiming to have sensitive photos and demanding money to keep them private. At first, I ignored it, assuming it was a scam, but they followed up with proof. Panic set in. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What’s the best way to handle this legally and safely? I need to make sure I don’t make things worse. Any advice would be a lifesaver.
