Motivational Thread Starting 8/5/13

Hi all! I waited until lunch break at work to see if a new thread had been posted, but I don't see one. I will start it off this week. I lost 4 pounds this week making my total loss 52 pounds. I have to say I am really proud of myself for sticking to it. Good luck everyone!

Weeks goals:

1. Post all food that enters my mouth
2. Walk 20 min. 5 out of the 7 days
3. Look for a walking buddy
4. Continue to try and relieve stress
5. Lose 2 pounds

Mern 08-05-2013 06:34 AM

RenewedSoul, congratulations on that four pounds lost this week and a total of 52 lbs. altogether! You are a role model for many of us! Best wishes this week as you continue your journey to better health and fitness. :)

01gt4.6 08-05-2013 06:48 AM

Awesome job on the 4 pounds!

I guess I should come up with goals this week. I haven't logged my food in a few weeks but have been staying active... as much as possible in this heat. Speaking of heat, at 6:30pm the heat index was 105*! I've been hitting the gym 3 days a week but Friday I pulled a muscle in my back on my first rep.

1) 3 liters water a day
2) 3 fruits/veggies per day
3) workout 3 times

Anyone else have any love for the number 3?

jjrudd 08-05-2013 10:31 AM

I'm not sure what my goals will be for the week. I am making sure I'm drinking lots of water but I did treat myself to pulled pork sandwich at Ribfest today.

I'll post goals tomorrow evening after I go to Dr. I wish the number on the scale was lower but the number I'm really worried about is A1C.

Jenn

Robingen 08-05-2013 12:28 PM

oops! fell off

Well I fell off the fitday wagon. For the first time in months I didn't log last week. First I was sick and then just some crazy days and I got a kitten (7 weeks old). No movement on the scale though, still bouncing around 1-3 lbs from goal. Like you Mike I have been active though not to the gym, but lots of walking and swimming and yoga. Sat we went to Hopewell Rocks, on the ocean floor of the Bay of Fundy. It's quite a hike. We had to take the shuttle partway back up because husband's broken leg swelled.

Renewed soul, your dedication and persistence are really paying off. Congratulations. Surely you can find a walking buddy.

Jenn good luck at the dr appt tomorrow.

Mike........I like the 3's. Not off to a roaring start though.

Goals:

1. Workout 3x, M-walk
2. Eat 3 veg per day, M-1
3. Do 3 (extra) chores per day, M-1

01gt4.6 08-06-2013 02:18 AM

1) 3 liters water a day no
2) 3 fruits/veggies per day no
3) workout 3 times no

Nice goals. I've been off that wagon for a while, unfortunately I have had scale movement.

libby116 08-06-2013 02:25 AM

8 glasses of water per day
8k walking per week
Calories under 1100 per day

I am noticing a pattern in my weight loss. I will have one or two good weeks followed by a low week. This is the low week at only two tenths of a pound.

RS: You are the leader of the pack again with a 4 pound loss.
Mern: I am rooting for you. Us shorties have to stick together.
Jenn: Good luck at the Dr.
Mike: I hope your back feels better soon.
Robin: Give your kitten a kiss from me. ;)

I lost my cat a few years ago and I still miss him.

jjrudd 08-06-2013 08:31 AM

Just got back from Dr. A1C is the same as last time. Since my eating habits weren't great in June I'm happy with that. Weight was 2lbs lower than my scale at home. No comment that I was 5lbs lower than the last time I went to the Dr.
BP was high but I think that was due to TTOM. I have to go back in a month to check it again.

Am I allowed a rant? I waited a month to get in and there were only 2 people ahead of me. The waiting room as practically empty and I was told that they were SOOO busy. He certainly didn't take the time that my previous Dr did.

Jennifer

iansteele 08-06-2013 11:46 AM

It's always good to rant Jenn, most doctors are really full of excrement these days

Goals:

1. 3500 calories worth of exercise
2. Under 2000 calories per day
3. Under 40g fat per day
4. 3 fruit/veg per day
5. 3 of something to be decided later

iansteele 08-06-2013 11:51 AM

Goals:

1. 3500 calories worth of exercise
M-415, T-256
2. Under 2000 calories per day
M-2313, T-1477
3. Under 40g fat per day
M-44.2, T-31.7
4. 3 fruit/veg per day
M-5, T-1
5. 3 of something to be decided later

RenewedSoul 08-06-2013 01:36 PM

Weeks goals:

Hope everyone is doing well!

Jennifer: sounds great that your weight was down at Dr. office

1. Post all food that enters my mouth: Yes
2. Walk 20 min. 5 out of the 7 days: No
3. Look for a walking buddy: live way out in the country, will be difficult to find one unless its at work
4. Continue to try and relieve stress: Yes
5. Lose 2 pounds

Robingen 08-06-2013 02:44 PM

Goals:

1. Workout 3x, M-walk, T-Walk
2. Eat 3 veg per day, M-1, T-4
3. Do 3 (extra) chores per day, M-1, T- 1 very big one

If it wasn't for that veg goal I would not have had that huge salad tonight, had to get the vegs in and the kitten ate most of my chicken. She is relentless. And she says thanks for the kisses.

Jenn, I agree with Ian. I was raised to respect doctors and their authority and these days I have no respect for most of them. The more I learn the less trust I have in them. The jury is still out on my new family doc, I only met him twice. The surgeon that fixed my husband's leg was amazing. At least half the problem with the doctors is their office staff. You have to take charge of your own health, that's my take.

As a workout I could recommend the Tabata workout. Check it out, it is quite intense. Advantage: Doesn't require that much time.

jjrudd 08-07-2013 01:22 AM

Thanks Ian, RenewedSoul and Robin. I agree with you Robin. I'm the the one who is in charge of what goes in my mouth and how much exercise I get. I do go to a diabetes centre (nurse and dietician) and I can ask as many questions as I want.

Since the week is half over I'm going to keep my goals simple
Drink 6 glasses of water
Keep carbs in check
4 servings fruits/veggies

Jenn

RenewedSoul 08-07-2013 02:04 AM

Hope everyone is doing good so far! Cute kitty Robin! I have had some wonderful doctors and some that were horrible. The worse thing is having medical staff that is hateful and rude. I think that they forget who they work for, which is us. We pay them to take care of us. All the patients are their employers, which I think they forget.

1. Post all food that enters my mouth: Yes, yes
2. Walk 20 min. 5 out of the 7 days: No, yes
3. Look for a walking buddy: live way out in the country, will be difficult to find one unless its at work
4. Continue to try and relieve stress: Yes, no
5. Lose 2 pounds: hoping.....

Robingen 08-07-2013 03:51 AM

Yes I am struggling right now with a rude and disrespectful medical secretary who keeps blaming everything on the doctor (opthamologist). I have called the referring opthamologist to let them know what's going on. Because I can't speak to the doctor directly (that would be horrible wouldn't it?). This is all regarding my son's "emergency" eye surgery that he needs. The secretary does not know that am as relentless as my kitten with chicken lol.

Oh and I added a 3 goal:

4. Do lovingkindness meditation 3x this week: M-Y, T-N

And Jenn you are right, the medical system can't fix the problem they can only treat the symptoms. Maybe effectively or not. TAKE CHARGE! :)

jjrudd 08-07-2013 10:10 AM

Wed report
Drink 6 glasses of water probably be the end of the day
Keep carbs in check NO
4 servings fruits/veggies 6 had big salad for lunch

Hope everyone is doing good this week! It is pretty quiet here. It is flooding where I live like crazy. Water is everywhere and it's still pouring down rain!

Week goals:

1. Post all food that enters my mouth: Yes, yes, yes
2. Walk 20 min. 5 out of the 7 days: No, yes, yes

Congrats on the 1lb weight loss RenewedSoul!

libby116 08-08-2013 09:24 AM

8 glasses of water per day: Y
8k walking per week: N
Calories under 1100 per day: T-784

I fell off the wagon hard the last few days and I am in junk food withdrawl today. I just wanted what everone else was eating and now I am regretting it.

jjrudd 08-08-2013 09:31 AM

I understand Libby. Mom and I were running errands this morning and of course we stopped at Tim's.
I know that if I want to lose weight and maintain my blood sugars I can't have that stuff but I did anyway. It's hard to think this is the lifestyle that we will have forever. I also wish that my Mom would be on board. I am maintaining the same blood sugar level since I was diagnosed without meds (metformin).

Jenn

Mern 08-08-2013 10:31 AM

Well, crud! I log on yesterday morning around 9:15AM and composed a post of support and cheers and thought I hit the submit button, but I don't see it, even when I check under my username for recent posts. :(

Things are still nuts here with re-roofing and other restoration/repair work to come at our daughters house (single mother of four) while she's at work and DH and I are in charge. Long story short: water damage and no homeowners insurance. There's more work to come but the roof should be finished tonight.

Quick recap of my uposted post:

Mike: kudos on staying active

RenewedSoul, did you or any loved ones have any damage from the flooding? Hope you all are safe!

Robin: may I say great job on still bouncing around only 1-3 lbs. from goal? Beats the heck out of a continual creeping up on the scale. I agree with you one thousand percent. We have to take charge of our own health.

Libby: that's a good weight loss pattern. Sometimes our bodies just need to take time off to slow down on weight loss so they can get used to their lower weights. We all know weight stays off better when it comes off slowly. I'm rooting for you, too, Shortie. :D

Jenn, glad you were satisfied with your A1C. :) My doc's scale is four lbs. lower than my home scale, so I go by my home scale weight for my weight loss endeavors. No priase for being 5 lbs. lower than your last visit? Aw, sorry about your frustration with your doc. My old doc used to do that. I'm lucky my new one never hurries me out. My scheduled 15 minutes has turned into 30 or 35 a couple times due to her sitting down with me to formulate a new plan of attack on problem areas. Maybe a woman doctor would be more willing to give you the time you need? Can you look for a new doc if you wish, or are you assigned a certain doctor?

Ian, the diplomat, LOL on some docs being "full of excrement."

Ugh, I thought we were done for the evening, but the contractor for our daughter's house just called asking for a conference at my house tonight. It's frustrating, but at least it's a house and money, not health problems or some tragedy. We'll get through it.

jjrudd 08-08-2013 11:10 AM

Mern, Hope everything works out for your daughter!
No, I'm stuck with this Dr as it's impossible to find a Dr. My kidney specialist is a woman and I like her. I'll see what the number is when I go to her as her scale is probably a little more accurate. My family Dr just uses a bathroom scale.

RenewedSoul 08-08-2013 12:15 PM

Hi Mern! I am sorry to hear about the roof and water damage. To answer your question, my family and us have not had any water damage yet. We all live on top of hills thank goodness. (not so good though when we have tornadoes and wind storms) The rain is crazy. It is supposed to rain 4 more inches tonight. It has rained daily for like 2 weeks.

Hi Libby. I am sorry that you are having a rough day. It is very difficult for me to watch others eat what they want and have to restrain myself. Hope things get better. :)

You can say "I want it but I can't" or "I can but I don't want it"- sometimes the most subtle mental shifts are helpful!

Libby, I have two grown sons at my house right now and they are both trying to gain weight! Eating 3000 cals per day. Oh the crap they eat!

Renewed soul, the flooding is scary sometimes. Did you see what happened in Calgary last June?

Mern! No wonder you are busy, what a mess. I hope things are going smoothly.

This week's goals:

1. Workout 3x, M-walk, T-Walk, W-walk, Th-Walk/Run
2. Eat 3 veg per day, M-1, T-4, W-4, Th-9 (yes that's correct-9)
3. Do 3 (extra) chores per day, M-1, T- 1 very big one, W-3 (1 was plumbing yick), Th-3
4. 3 Lovingkindness meditations: M-Y, T-N. W-Y, Th-N

My back and legs have improved enough that I can run a bit again. No much but it's a start.

RenewedSoul 08-09-2013 01:11 AM

I am having a good week, and the scales are definitely moving down this week. The weekend is fast approaching. Yay! :D

Mern, I noticed your weight went down! Yay for you! Good job. :)
Robin, I think it's great that your able to run again. You are healing so well. :)
jjrudd, I hope everything went well at the kidney doctor for you.
iansteele, It looks like your doing good on your week goals. Chores is a great thing to add for a goal. Good luck!
Week goals:

1. Post all food that enters my mouth: Yes, yes, yes, yes
2. Walk 20 min. 5 out of the 7 days: No, yes, yes, no
3. Look for a walking buddy: live way out in the country, will be difficult to find one unless its at work; talking to teen daughter to see if she will be my buddy for night walks

Thursday was a better day, not perfect but better. I just have to leave the room when the guys are eating junk. It helps to have a hobby where I can distract myself.
I spent the morning at the hospital getting blood work done and an ECG. Then I had a nurse explain the proceduce to look at my kidneys from inside. Then I had to see the anesthesiologist to see whether I will have a general or spinal anesthetic. The surgery is on the 29 of August . On Monday I have to go to the lab for fasting blood sugar. On the 18th is my nieces wedding. On the 20 I see my family Dr. for blood sugar, blood pressure and colesterol check up. In the midst of all this my husband and son are going through temporary job reasignments for an indetermanent period of time. I have been having crazy nightmares when I do get to sleep. I wish that August was over.

jjrudd 08-09-2013 08:53 AM

Oh Libby that all sounds incredibly stressful. We are all here for you.

Jenn

libby116 08-09-2013 11:01 AM

8 glasses of water per day: Y, Y,
8k walking per week: 2k
Calories under 1100 per day:800, 1052,

I will do my best to end the week better than it started. Congrats to all who are staying strong and losing. Hugs to all who are struggling.

Robingen 08-09-2013 12:44 PM

This week's goals:

1. Workout 3x, M-walk, T-Walk, W-walk, Th-Walk/Run, F-N
2. Eat 3 veg per day, M-1, T-4, W-4, Th-9 (yes that's correct-9), F-1 (better do an average for the week lol)
3. Do 3 (extra) chores per day, M-1, T- 1 very big one, W-3 (1 was plumbing yick), Th-3, F-0
4. 3 Lovingkindness meditations: M-Y, T-N. W-Y, Th-N, F-Y

It was a pretty lazy day. Didn't really accomplish anything. But got some readying done. Went and got supplies (paint, plumbing), printed some forms that I need to fill out, stuff like that.

Libby your August sounds very challenging. I hope that your exploratory surgery goes well. You need a plan to get through all this. Hugs to you!

Mern 08-09-2013 12:48 PM

This welcome is for the anticipated arrival of stacyfrederick66. Hoping she will join our group. :)

Thanks to all who have posted kind words of support over our daughter's water damage and no homeowner's insurance. The roof is done and gutter work to be started hopefully Monday. Then onto restoring the kitchen ceiling and a new wall in the bathroom. After a rather unsettling week, DH and I enjoyed dinner out tonight and I stayed really well on track: grilled chicken, green beans, spinach based tossed salad with low carb ranch dressing I toted from home. Dessert was sugar free Jello and two one inch cubes of melon and one of fresh pineapple. Treated myself to a diet cola.

Robin, so glad to read of the improvement in your back and legs. :)

Renewed Soul, OMG, you certainly are getting the rain! Wishing you comfort and safety. Kudos on the downward trend on your scale. :) Oh, thanks for your encouragement on my loss last week.

Jenn, I know it's hard to think this is the lifestyle we will have forever. Some of our newer members may not know that some of us have done so, or are in the process of reversing our diabetes or pre-diabetes without medication. Mine has been normal through low carb diet with my doctor's supervision and FitDay support since 2011. My doc told me if I stick with a healthful diet, even though my family has a heavy history of type II diabetes, I may never develop full-blown diabetes. I'm not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm trying hard to broaden my low carb food selections so I don't get "bored out of" eating what's healthful for me, even though it about kills me sometimes to see what other people can have that I can't. It's certainly not easy, but when you think you could be on Metformin right now, give yourself high praise for your courage, convictions, and success. :)

Libby, I share your frustration. My DH buys tons of junk food for himself and the grandkids--lots of snack cakes, cookies, chips... OMG, honey, you have so much on your "life plate" right now with the medical and job issues and all the other stuff you have going on in August. You know our hearts (and prayers of we who are so inclined) are with you through it all.

iansteele 08-09-2013 05:48 PM

Might as well just starve myself for the next month...

Goals:

1. 3500 calories worth of exercise
M-415, T-256, W-549, Th-149, F-201
2. Under 2000 calories per day
M-2313, T-1477, W-1330, Th-1675, F-6892
3. Under 40g fat per day
M-44.2, T-31.7, W-34.2, Th-46.5, F-175.1
4. 3 fruit/veg per day
M-5, T-1, W-3, Th-4, F-11
5. 3 of something to be decided later - I'll make that house chores

And the saga goes on. In September I have to see the eye surgeon about a cataract in my left eye. I had my right eye done several years ago and was amazed at the results. I am praying that we still have medical coverage for the surgery and new glasses. After 3 days of being good my weight is still up. We went to a movie last night and I watched my husband eat ice cream. My blood tests are on Monday so I am going to be good all week end. I hope that the regained weight will be gone by then. I want my Dr. to tell me that I am doing well.

Mern 08-10-2013 02:29 AM

Aw, crud! I lost my long post AGAIN! But I know what I did today--I didn't compose and save it on NotePad first, but in the reply box. It didn't go through and I was unable to recover it, even with hitting the back button on the browser. I screw my post up sometimes when I think I'll have a short post, so go with the reply box composition and it turns into a long post. When will I ever LEARN?!

In short:

Ian, rooting you on and hope your Saturday report is more in line for calories and fat. Your fruit and veggie servings were great Friday. :) What did you eat yesterday? Peanut butter and banana ice cream with bacon bits? LOL

Libby: honey, I am so rooting you on with your medical issues doctor visit.

I have to go out to get a haircut and run errands. Will catch you all later.

RenewedSoul 08-10-2013 04:38 AM

It's the weekend and I see the sun out! Good luck everyone. The weekend is the most difficult time for me to stick with my goals.

Mern: I hate when I lose a post and have to write it all over again. Have a great weekend!

Libby: I will keep you in my prayers for your health issues. I hope your doctor compliments you for all your hard work on Monday. :)

Ian: It seems like Friday was a rough day for you on calories. No worries, you can make up for it in the next few days. Keep strong!

1. Post all food that enters my mouth: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
2. Walk 20 min. 5 out of the 7 days: No, yes, yes, no, no
3. Look for a walking buddy: live way out in the country, will be difficult to find one unless its at work; talking to teen daughter to see if she will be my buddy for night walks
4. Continue to try and relieve stress: Yes, no, no, no, yes
5. Lose 2 pounds:
