Motivation & Accountability Thread, May 4 - 10, 2015: The Wagon Awaits -- Jump on!

As I've said before, I'm not so good at making up pithy thread titles, so I borrowed this one from this week, last year (May 5, 2014). I hope Hope sees it, because it's her title! :p

Anyway, let's get this show on the road, eh?

episode2011 05-04-2015 05:34 AM

My Strategy for the Week (May 3 - May 10):
  • 7-day Rolling Average calories = 1400-1450:
  • 7-day Rolling Average water/tea, minimum 2500mL (10+ 8oz glasses):
  • 7-day Rolling Average sodium = 1000-1400:
  • 7-day Rolling Average sat fat = under 18g: struggled with this one last week, hoping to do better this week
  • Macro -- 7-day Rolling Average Fats = 50-60g:
  • Macro -- 7-day Rolling Average Carbs = 125-135g:
  • Macro -- 7-day Rolling Average Protein = 100-110:
  • Macro -- 7-day Rolling Average Fiber = 35-45g:
  • Explore! Try something new or do some nutrition-related research at least 2 times:
As I expected, making the changes to my strategy resulted in a small gain. I suspect the main reason is I've upped the calories (from an average 1100/day to 1400/day) and the body simply didn't know what to do with them all. It's a bit scary -- upping calories is counter-intuitive to the whole "Eat Less!!!" mantra. But I'm going to put my trust in the theory that too few calories causes metabolic slowdown. And it's not like "Eat Less!!!" was working like gangbusters, so...

I've lived with this body long enough to realize that it is, without a doubt, the slowest losing body IN THE WORLD. No matter what I do to try to lose weight, no matter how faithfully I stick to the plan (whatever the plan is), this body refuses to cooperate; it fights me at every turn. As if it thinks it's being paid by the pound!!! :p

In any event, I'm going to stick with this strategy for at least the next week or so, mainly because I haven't found anything else I want to substitute for it. Yet. Doesn't mean I've stopped looking :D.

canary52 05-04-2015 06:42 AM

My title yay!!!!! Thanks Epi!!!! Ok, I guess I have to join you (fake heavy sigh.) Also because I am eating everything that is not nailed down and then pulling up the nails on the other stuff and eating that too.

Goals:
1) stop eating everything that is not nailed down and then some. Get back on moderate healthy plan
2) weigh myself only once a week (Friday?)
3) WRITE
4) meditate
5) stretch
6) 6 glasses of water minimum
7) get rid of 5 papers or 3 items per day

Starting training for a new job so let's see how strenuous that is and try to fit some movement (walk, gym, dance) in.

Re: The Wagon Awaits

I love it as I definitely need to get back on myself. Just when the pounds were rolling off and everything was booking right along –

- I got so sick based on my ability to get out of bed, motivate and self-actualize, heck by comparison I probably made heroin addicts on the nod look busily well productive.
- Despite carb intake so low the only way I should probably consume less carbs would be if I were dead my blood sugar soared.
- To make matters worse I could not go walking
- Then my computer died and kept giving me warning CPU failure messages
- Followed by the next day both my kitchen and bathroom scales going on low battery flashing frenzy alert and where I put the spares I did not remember and was too weak and tried to go looking, searching for them
AUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

However I did what I could, didn't muck up too bad, did a fair job of estimating things, saw continued overall improvement of my blood sugars and though I didn't lose as much weight as quickly the second half of the month, I did still lose some. All total in April I lost 13 pounds despite the rough second half during which I only managed to lose 3.

This week my goals are different as my strategy has changed a bit. I’m back to my full dose of metformin because even though I can keep my blood sugar lower without the additional dose to do so I have to cut my carbs so low that I just can't see any way overall, long haul it could possibly be healthy or satisfying enough a diet to continue on/keep sticking with it.

My goals this week are
No fasting blood sugar over 150
No 2 hour after meal blood sugar over 140
Three meals spaced evenly apart
Limit fruit
No wheat based anything and no cereals, pasta, or potatoes.
As long as blood sugars continue to fall and I continue to lose weight without counting carbs eat as I please
If blood sugar begins climbing again back to counting carbs
Make better choices at store, last month was tough but now I have a much better idea of what and how much I should be shopping for
Check BS four times a day
Drink plenty of water

Epi – though I don’t stop losing weight if I eat very low calorie I have a similar problem in that if I don't eat enough my blood sugar will actually go up, run a little higher than if I actually eat a slightly higher amount of the right kind of calories. It seems weird with as much as diabetes instructors drive home the message about portion control, portion control, limiting calories and so on that I would actually do better on slightly more calories than less but for some weird reason that’s just how it works. I find I have to eat a certain minimum number of calories to keep my blood sugar as low as I'd like but not too much more or then it shoots way up. It’s like there is this sweet spot and I have to stay right in the middle of it and while too many calories is definitely really bad for my blood sugar at the same time too few can also give me problems as well. Not as many as over eating but enough that it’s still not a healthy choice. So like you I have to eat more calories, as counterintuitive as it seems, to reach my goals. Talk about crazy making!

AZLisaLou 05-04-2015 10:44 AM

Sunday, wow, you really have to keep things to a science for your blood sugars to not shoot up. 13 lbs in one month is fabulous! Keep it all up!

Epixi, if I eat in the 1200 calorie range I don't lose anything at all. If I eat in the 1500 range then I'm losing late at a fair clip. So I hope your strategy of upping the calories a little will prove to be a good plan for you as well. I love your energy and the vibes you put out on this forum.

Hope, hi there! Good to see you here with us!

Debbie? Annette? Becca? Mike? Who am I missing? Wish Mern and Terri were back.

I think I figured out part of my attitude problem toward losing weight. I just feel like there's no way possible for me to lose as much as I need to lose (at least 100). And not only lose it, but maintain it. I feel like I can't do this for the rest of my life. I'm feeling very discouraged. Each time I get back to my original weight, or close to it, then it's so much harder to lose the same weight (and as much) as the time before. I'm not complaining or being negative, I'm just saying what's going on in my mind and what my thinking is. I'm just at a point where I feel like it's all pointless. But I will continue to come here, get motivation from all your successes, and continue to not go crazy overboard. right now I'm happy if I maintain. I've been within the same 5 lb range for at least a month.

My weight is affecting my knees, and my back still gives me troubles. I know I need to lose and those things will heal up, as well as the high cholesterol and high glucose. Logically I know all of these things. In my heart though, it's just not there.

Goal for the week:

Work on attitude and outlook.

lildebbieg 05-04-2015 11:25 AM

Hi all :o I'm here...but my heart is not in it tonight! I'll post again later in the week if I get over my funk. Maaaannn...PMS is real! :cool:

episode2011 05-04-2015 12:58 PM

Hope: At least you're not eating the nails, themselves! Glad to see you here and thanks for coming up with the title ;).

RL: Sounds like it's a real challenge to keep the blood sugar in check. So many factors to keep in balance. And then to get sick AND have the computer and scales conk out on you... That said, 13 pounds in April, wow! And I like how you used the phrase "sweet spot". I was just thinking about that phrase this week! GMTA, right?

Lisa: You're right -- some days, some weeks, it feels like this task is insurmountable. As I've said before, this is my umpteenth time starting this journey. I think a big part is trying to sort through the mountain of material and trying to figure out how it applies to your specific body (IF it applies). A big part is simply understanding your specific body and mind. That's a lot of what you're doing now and it's good. I love your tenacity. You're going to get through this. I have faith in you.

Debbie: I don't envy you with the PMS. Ugh. Know that we're all here for you (((hugs))).

Gah -- gotta run. Didn't get to post today's results. Oh well, next time. Later, y'all! Stay strong!

rosabella2012 05-04-2015 01:26 PM

Debbie: I'm 56 and I'm right with you on PMS--it's been giving me fits for the past week!

Hope: So good to hear from you!

RL: Great job on losing 13 pounds in a MONTH! I think that's wonderful!

Lisa: Trying to figure out just what works for your body takes a lot of patience and work. You're doing a great job! Keep up the good work!

Another 1.6 pounds lost and with PMS/Mother Nature issues too! Anybody want to share what they're doing foodwise for Mother's Day? I need some ideas.
Read online: Every pound lost is a victory celebrated! I agree! Vicki

canary52 05-04-2015 02:23 PM

Goals:
1) stop eating everything that is not nailed down and then some. Get back on moderate healthy plan - N, ate the nails too yup
2) weigh myself only once a week (Friday?):Y
3) WRITE: ish
4) meditate: no
5) stretch: yes
6) 6 glasses of water minimum: ?7) get rid of 5 papers or 3 items per day: yes

It sounds like everyone is facing challenges: finding the right balance in terms of not too many, not too few calorie wise: Epi and RL you sound like you've done well with this.

Then there is the issue of getting discouraged. Lisa, please keep with it. I know it is so hard. Don't give up. Staying with anything is the hardest thing I think.

Debbie, PMS ah yesss I remember those happy happy days when the only thing that kept me from mayhem was chocolate and then something salty. Now I am in what I call mental pause. Ahahahaha. I enjoy being a girl lol during these special times. Don't you?

Rosabella, we eat at home on Mother's Day, easier on the wallet, less crowded. Usually DH makes my favorite orange chicken but this year between birthdays and other occasions, and the fact that I am getting a little fluffy again, I will be happy with a small parade in my honor, errr I mean peace and quiet. Yes. Peace. To all.

Vicki: Hi there! Congratulations one 1.6!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Strategy for the Week (May 3 - May 10):
  • 7-day Rolling Average calories = 1400-1450: 1400 <--- woot, squeaked in under the wire!
  • 7-day Rolling Average water/tea, minimum 2500mL (10+ 8oz glasses): 3191
  • 7-day Rolling Average sodium = 1000-1400: 1121
  • 7-day Rolling Average sat fat = under 18g: 19
  • Macro -- 7-day Rolling Average Fats = 50-60g: 60
  • Macro -- 7-day Rolling Average Carbs = 125-135g: 145
  • Macro -- 7-day Rolling Average Protein = 100-110: 85
  • Macro -- 7-day Rolling Average Fiber = 35-45g: 31
  • Explore! Try something new or do some nutrition-related research at least 2 times:
    • Monday: Purchased a small pack of protein powder. Haven't done anything with it yet, it's just in the pantry. Waiting...
I'm hitting the mark on calories, for the most part. Now it's just a matter of switching up the components. A little less carbs, a little more protein. I can do this.
rainbow24 05-04-2015 03:47 PM
Epixi, I could use a wagon. One with bars so I can't escape.
Lisa, thank you for thinking of me. I have been feeling a little (self-inflicted) left out. I'm here.
I still have to get batteries in my scale. Procrastination!
I mowed 75% of the front yard today. It took 4 rounds followed by 1 litre of water. It's raining now so I won't be finishing tomorrow.
This week I need to get on track with my food intake. Not necessarily counting everything, but more keeping it simple.
Breakfast without after snacks.
Lunch without ice cream for dessert.
Dinner with vegetables.
WATER, WATER, WATER!
Sorry, Annette, we can't do bars here on M&A. What we can do is link arms and gather around you in a big ol' (((GROUP HUGGG))). Much better than bars, yes? ;)
rainbow24 05-05-2015 03:10 AM
I have to get my stuff together and get back to a schedule.
7 am wake up (wish it was earlier) meds
7:30 second round of pills (supplements)
8 am now I am allowed breakfast which must contain some fat for taking my last supplement
9 am I start whatever I have to start, be it outdoor work, indoor work, or errands
9:30 am I can start my water intake with my heart meds
Today I am all about scheduling. My knees hurt from mowing the hill out front, so I need to stretch and rest today.
So, I am going to plan which days I have to supplement my busyness with more formal exercise, and when to schedule that in.
Meals today:
Yogurt whole grain waffles (homemade) with strawberries and low fat topping.
Time to try my pea soup made with tea instead of ham.
Salmon fillets, carrots, and roasted potatoes.
Yogurt with mango for dessert.
Hi all. We had a Fifth of May fund raiser at church last night with build your own tacos and sundaes. It was oh so good but the scale did not agree this morning so it's back to eating lean today. I am going to need to get cracking to lose another two pounds this week. Have a good one.
I would be so over the moon to lose 2 pounds in a week. Since September, I've had exactly two instances where I lost more than 1 pound in a week. The first was in September, when I was sick. The second was in March (?), when I lost the 2 pounds I'd gained the week before.
2 pounds in a week apparently isn't in the cards for me. :(
AZLisaLou 05-06-2015 07:26 PM
Annette, can you please post your recipe for the yogurt whole grain waffles in the food/recipes forum?
Epixi, what did you learn about slow losers?
Libby, tacos and sundaes sound delish, but I can see why the scale would disagree. I remember once our church had a "Penny a Pound Ice Cream Social" to raise money. You got on the scale and paid whatever your weight was. Even as a 10 year old I was afraid of getting on the scale and having people know how much I weighed. Hope you get rid of the 2 lbs you're hoping for.
Yesterday was my 21st anniversary. That's a pretty big number! We didn't do anything at all, but that's ok with me. I cooked an incredibly tasty dinner of chicken and wild rice (includes cream of chicken soup, sour cream and white wine in the sauce...NOT low cal!!!) and brussels sprouts on the side. I need to make those more often. My kids were arguing over who could have more. And Jeff got me a big Symphony chocolate bar with toffee and almond pieces. sooooo good, but I know soooo bad. Fortunately our anniversary only comes once a year. I used to be addicted to them, so having them only once a year now is a success.
Will work on today being a better one diet-wise.
Also, I'm excited because I got 4 more purse orders for the month. Apparently the recipients of the skulls & roses and Marvel comics purses both loved them. (whew!) All I was told was blue polka dots (knowing a shade would be nice!), owls, patriotic, and frogs. The woman who gets all my orders gives me sooooooooo little to go on. She just says, "Do your art!" which is kind of stressful, because I don't know if I'm on track or not.
I'm also expanding my Etsy with some experiments in baby and pet items.
Hope everyone has a great day!
7) get rid of 5 papers or 3 items per day: yes, yes, yes, yes
canary52 05-07-2015 02:57 AM
Happy Anniversary, Lisa!!! It's funny how celebrations always include the food we're trying to avoid. But I think you have to enjoy now and then or like me, you rebel.
Your purses sound wonderful. It must be frustrating to get vague directions (or no directions at all) but you must be doing something right!!!
rainbow24 05-07-2015 03:53 AM
Lisa, I don't really have a recipe. It's all about my mood and what's in my fridge. Right now the yogurt is past date so I have to use it up. Next week it will be sour cream and the week after that it will be past date milk from the baby. Grandchild that is.
I mix up a flour blend using rye flour, whole wheat flour, and ground flax. To make one waffle I mix 1/3 cup of that, only because I have too many 1/3 cup measuring cups. I add a little baking powder. Measured in the palm of my hand. Then I add an egg and two generous spoons of (yogurt this week). If I crave flavor, I add whatever I crave. Rum flavoring with a handful of raisins. A handful of blueberries. Banana flavoring because I am allergic to real bananas. Chopped apple with cinnamon. Pumpkin with pie spices, or just the spices.
Oh, and I add water to thin it out some unless I am using milk.
My cooking is way too erratic to write down the recipe. I could try to make exact measures once to give it to others.
This is a low sodium, low sugar, low fat variety.
episode2011 05-08-2015 02:10 AM
Nearly 24 hours with NO posts? Has everyone lost interest? In the thread? In the whole dieting/nutrition journey?
Or has everyone simply gotten fed up (heh see what I did there -- "fed" up?) with the constant logging-off issue here on Fitday? I've been logged off 3 times already this morning and it's darned annoying. Will we all drift away? And who'll turn off the lights?
libby135 05-08-2015 02:46 AM
Getting logged off is certainly a problem but my issue was too much snacking and regaining weight.
episode2011 05-08-2015 02:49 AM
Lisa: Happy anniversary! 21 years, woohoo! To answer your question, turns out, genetics plays a HUGE role in determining the speed with which one loses weight. Some people are simply destined to lose in ounces (that's me). No matter what I do, or how well I stick to a plan, I'll probably never be one of those lucky people who lose 1-2 pounds a week. It's so frustrating :(. Another key factor is how efficient the body is. The more efficient the body is, the slower it will lose weight. Apparently, I'm super-efficient. Usually, one would think efficiency is a good thing, but in this case, it's not. Not unless there's a famine. Basically, I was doomed from the start. Disheartening.
Hope: I think you're right about celebrations including foods we'd like to avoid. I don't think a birthday party with nothing but celery would go over very well!
Annette: You sound like a cooking free-spirit :). Throw stuff together, see what comes out.
Well, I'm going to have a Blow-Out Weekend this weekend. I've been planning for it since January 1. This weekend is a big deal for me. I had HOPED to have lost at least 12 pounds by now, but sadly, I've only lost 9. 9 stinkin' pounds in 4 months; genetically normal people would have lost 16-24 in 4 months (assuming they were as faithful to their diet plan as I have tried to be). I was even planning to get some new clothes, but that's on the back burner now. Yeah, I'm a touch bitter. Part of me feels I don't deserve the celebration because results say I haven't earned it
But y'know what? I DO deserve the celebration because I've worked HARD for the past 4 months. I may not have the results, but I've darn sure put in the effort. So I'm going to cast aside the part of me that says I don't deserve it and I'm going to enjoy every second (and every calorie) of my Blow-Out Weekend.
I'll get back on track on Monday. Heh and with my super-efficient body, I'll probably be 5 pounds heavier. I can't win. :p
rainbow24 05-08-2015 03:07 AM
Yeah, after typing that out yesterday I added oatmeal to my waffle. It is a little high in calories but I figure that it covers two meals and I'm burning it off in the yard.
I finished the front yard yesterday, today I mow the back. This will be much easier.
I also have errands to run today so I have to remember to bring my water. It's a warm one coming up.
rosabella2012 05-08-2015 09:41 AM
Hey, folks! Busy and enjoying this wonderful weather!
Washer could be fixed--don't need a new one--got one more load and I'll be caught up with laundry for a few days.
Had a can to explode in my cabinet--that meant I had to haul everything out and clean that. Oh, well, I need to go thru all that stuff anyway!
Fresh veggies--squash, green beans, tomatoes and onions-- from a local Farmers Market.
I'm starting on my cooking for the weekend. Got a new recipe to try for a dessert--Lemon Poppyseed Cake--made with almond flour and a splenda/stevia blend. Sounds good and looks pretty in the picture.
Had a NSV today--I've lost another inch in my waist and 3 inches from under my bust!
Regardless of what the scale says, I feel victorious!
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! To all of us--we did something amazing--we created another human being! Celebrate it! Vicki
episode2011 05-08-2015 05:01 PM
Vicki: Congratulations on your NSV! Those are always so sweet. And happy to hear the washer could be repaired. As usual, you are very busy and industrious! I get tired just reading about your activities :).
  • Explore! Try something new or do some nutrition-related research at least 2 times:
    • Monday: Purchased a small pack of protein powder. Haven't done anything with it yet, it's just in the pantry. Waiting...
    • Wednesday: Looked up a few protein powder recipes, but they all require more things than I currently have. I'll have to pick ONE recipe and go shopping. In the meantime, maybe I'll mix some in that hot cereal tomorrow...
    • Wednesday: Read some articles on slow losers (who, like me, aren't slow by choice). Genetics, again. DARN! Doomed from the start! :D
Was only able to get in a little over 1100 calories today, which made some of the averages drop. That's a bad thing for Calories and Fiber, but actually ended up being beneficial for Carbs (finally, a blue carbs number). I rationalized that I was banking calories for the weekend ;).
I plan to log everything, regardless of how decadent and outrageous. Should be some interesting numbers come Monday :D.
I am off to spend a day in the park dressed in long dress. Thankfully it's not wool and I don't have all the layers yet. Still hot. 10th century for women sucks.
Can we say SUNBURN?
I had an absolutely pleasant day in the park. The fighters were garbed in heavy armor and sweating buckets. Even they couldn't stand the smell of themselves. The public came and watched. They asked questions as well. The crazies were out as well.
I hand sewed all day and now I have to rip every stitch out because I did it wrong. :eek:
Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there. I hope you manage through your breakfasts in bed. Mine will be a lunch prepared by all the men in our church. My (adult) son made carrot cake last night. He's a perfectionist so even though I managed to lead him to a low fat recipe, I didn't think I could get away with adjusting the recipe to make it low sugar as well. At least not in front of him without him going into some sort of melt down.
I'll have a small slice. As with everything else the men bring for potluck.
Happy Mother's Day to all of us women! We're AWESOME!
Menu at my house: Baked chicken wings with 3 sauces--mine was garlic parm
Salad made with garden-fresh veggies: peppers, tomatoes, onions
red and green lettuces, radishes
Dessert: Almond meal Lemon Poppyseed cake with whipped cream
and fresh raspberries
And, yes, I did the cooking! Now it's quiet here--just me, the cats and the dog! Vicki
Oh, poo. Now I feel bad. I know today is Mother's Day in the US. I also know it is celebrated on different days elsewhere in the world. What I DIDN'T know is that Canadian Mother's Day and USA Mother's Day is the same day. We have a sizable Canadian group here on Fitday and I (innocently) omitted them/you from my Mother's Day message above :eek:.
Please know it was not intentional.
I have edited the post to be inclusive! Sorry 'bout that!
