Motivational Thread Nov 24-30 Learning from mistakes
I for one am about to recover from one big mistake. We have a water softener attached to our incoming water, with salt filtration. At the same time our reverse osmosis system was not working.
At first I was boiling tap water to drink. Big no-no on a low sodium diet. Then I just stopped drinking water. Big no-no regardless of your diet. I have been retaining water like crazy. My feet are puffy and hurt. Not as bad as last spring, but still bad. My goals this week: Water intake - 8 glass minimum Serving sizes - All things in moderation 5 walks - 7 1/2 mile minimum |
Good Morning!
Had a good weekend food-wise. Despite an out of town shopping trip, I seemed to remain on course. The mall was handing out a lot of food samples, cookies, fudge, cheese, sausage, etc., but I would take a bite, sample it (...thoroughly enjoy it!) and then hand the rest to my husband. lol I was able to find very healthy menu choices at the 2 restaurants that we visited. I have a little over a pound to reach my Thanksgiving goal. =) I have no idea why, but I'm happy to be back on my food plan. Since it's not that bad, I'm going to continue on past my goal weight and have a 5 lb. bumper built in for the holidays. Won't be walking again today, 40 mph wind gusts. But I must have walked for miles shopping over the weekend. Since everything continues to work, I'm sticking to my simple game plan: 1. Stay within calorie limit. 2. Drink coffee, water, tea, diet soda all day. 3. Stick to mostly 1 ingredient foods as possible. 4. Minimum of 4 fruits and veggies a day. 5. Be proud of ALL food choices; watch fat grams. Enjoy your day! ***Mike, Did so well with my weekend picks, that if NO wins tonight, I'm in first place!!!! No pressure or anything... lol. |

Your water goal is a good start. It is only a normal intake though. You probably want to add more water to your diet. If the goal is to lose weight.
If you are having trouble with your drinking water you should buy bottled water. You can usually get it pretty cheap. I get a case of 24 water bottles that are 24 oz "sport bottles" at BJ's Wholesale Club for $4.50. A glass of water is only 8 oz. so 1 bottled water would equal 3 glasses of what you are already drinking. Also get spring water as it tends to be the most pure and has some naturally occurring minerals in it. good luck! I use a 2L bottle and my water system is fixed now. Weight loss is only the side effect of healthy eating and exercise. |
enzo, please remove the link from your signature. Thanks.

Good job on the picks quinniepoo.

The only thing I hate about drinking water in a waterlogged environment is waking up 3 times in the night to pee, instead of once. I slept in because of it.
My goals this week: Water intake - 8 glass minimum Yes Serving sizes - All things in moderation Yes 5 walks - 7 1/2 mile minimum 7.5-2.5=5 miles to go I'm glad our streets were built in a mile grid or it would be harder to estimate distance. |
I agree with the bottled water approach. It's easier to judge how much water you have drank during the day when it's measured on the bottle.
Have Christmas party to go to on Fri. Potluck so I will have to be careful picking and choosing. Hopefully someone will bring veggie tray which is a good way to fill up without calories. Still have to finish raking the leaves (not much) but with winds of 50km/h not possible today. Jenn |
I fill a 2L jug every morning that is exclusively for me. Bottled water around here has a soapy taste. Good for emergencies, but I wouldn't want to drink it all the time. I prefer the reverse osmosis water from our well. Good mineral count, tested every month, and best of all, no chlorine.
I took my walk this morning. Only 1 1/2 miles. My legs felt hung over from yesterday's extra mile. |
I am supposed to use my alone time on my walk to work through scenes for my novel, but instead, I was thinking about weight loss.
Yesterday I got some rather blatant hints from people. Enzorossi for one about weight loss. I understand his thoughts, but there is much more to it than weight loss. Another hint was from a well-meaning neighbour who told me that another neighbour inspired him to walk because she started walking every day and lost a lot of weight. All this brought about a thought process this morning. The woman who lost all that weight did not lose it from walking, she had cancer and lost a lot of weight during chemo. She walks now for her health. She looked pretty bad after the treatments, but now she looks good, healthy. I have walked before. Forget walking, I went through a period of about 10 years where I was walking 2 1/2 miles every morning, then going to the gym 6 days a week and doing 6 different cardio classes each week, besides my hour of stretches and weights. I didn't really lose weight, only toned my muscles. Mike is not a new friend to me here. I met him years ago on this very forum. He has seen me come and go. Sometimes I lost a few pounds, sometimes I didn't. But always, I gave up. This time I am not here losing weight. I am here getting healthy. If I lose weight while I am doing that, great. Fantastic! I don't want to look good for anyone. In fact if I lose enough weight I might have to buy frumpy clothes. A few Mennonite dresses and a hair net should do me. The whole reason for this is health. I don't want to have another heart attack. Experiencing that once in a lifetime is good enough. There, its all off my chest now. |
Hi Annette,
I completely agree with you. The majority of Enzo's posts have been critical, designed to sell his product and make a profit off of those desperate to lose weight quickly. I wouldn't take to heart his comments. I, too, was scolded for drinking diet soda. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to agree that it has no nutrient value. But, it works for me. Enzo needs to realize 3 things: 1. Do not come here to sell your miracle product. Most of us have been around the block long enough to know that most are designed to only fatten the wallet of the seller. 2. What works for a 30 y/o man will not work in the same way for a 52 y/o woman. I watched a bit of his infomercial, and I too, was involved in a very serious car accident resulting in a traumatic spinal injury. His recommendation of skipping exercise for this sort of injury is unfortunate. He may get away with it at 30, but will, in all probability, result in complications from arthritis as he ages. With arthritis the old saying is true; if you don't use it, you lose it. 3. This section is for motivation and support, not criticism. Again, what works for one, may not work for all. One size-fits-all approaches are ridiculous. All need to be courteous and supportive of the path that works for us. Fortunately, these people aren't around for long. They post 5-10 times, drop their product bomb and leave. I predict that this will happen with him as well. |
Great workout, Libby. I was a part of a series of aqua fit classes back about 15 years ago. Each instructor had a different focus. I remember the Saturday class was a heavy duty workout, while the Mon, Wed, Fri class was more stretching and focusing. The Tues, Thurs class focused on lower body. I went for the shallow classes back then for two reasons, I wanted more impact, and second, I don't float.
I won't say that I lost weight, but that is the nature of my weight loss history. It always takes so much more for me to lose weight. My cousin resorted to starvation to lose weight. In fact I don't know anyone in my family that is thin without severe action to get that way. The aqua-fit did tone muscles. Thanks for the pep talk, Quinn. I just turned 55 on Monday. Completely different diet and exercise than when I was 30. Lack of exercise is what got me into this trouble, why would I stop now? Water intake - 8 glass minimum Yes Tuesdays are bad Serving sizes - All things in moderation Yes Birthday dinner 5 walks - 7 1/2 mile minimum 7.5- Monday 2.5=5- Tuesday 1.5=3.5- Wednesday 1.75=1.75 miles to go |
Hi all. I haven't been here in a while, just on daily weigh in. I am starting aqua fit tonight and wondered if any one else lost weight with this kind of exercise? Being in water won't put pressure on my joints and I hope to get a good work out with little or no pain. What do you think?
|
Libby, aqua fit is a great way to burn calories safely. Easy on the joints while giving you a good cardio workout. Have fun tonight!
Annette, was it you that told about 29 and holding? I told someone the whole thing and they laughed for about 10 minutes! One of my favorite lines ever! =) I'm just learning how to "drive" my over 50 body. (I swear we should get an instruction manual or something! lol) My body chemistry is different, where I put on weight is different, skin, hair, joints... you name it, it's different. It only makes sense that our food choices, etc. have to change, too. Only you know your body and what works. I have 2 female doctors that are about my age that give me such good advice and helpful hints... Easy, natural tips that I've never heard male physicians give. Sorry guys! It's just that men have never been a 50 y/o woman before, right? lol Today started out great. I had a long list of errands to do. So I got up early, successfully accomplished them all, ran through a drive-thru to pick up my favorite coffee, pulled in the driveway to grab the mail and then it happened. My car that I just bought in August, decided that it preferred to remain in "park". Nothing I could do would move the gearshift lever. I was so close to bringing my first cup of coffee into the house and patting myself on the back for accomplishing my list! After an hour of trying to figure it out, I called a tow truck and off my new car went. Just out of warranty, too. How do cars know that it's Christmas and always pick this time of year to hand us bills? lol Oh well... it could have been worse. At least it happened in my driveway. I could have been angry and had a big, fat burger and fries and washed it down with an eggnog shake, but I'm stranded at home... the one advantage of having your car towed away! =) So a turkey spinach wrap it was. Waiting for my mechanic to call with the grand total. Ugh. |
Happy Birthday Annette.
Quinn, I hope you get your car back soon. Aqua fit was a work out but I enjoyed it and am going back for more. Funny thing, my weight is up two pounds this morning and I don't know why. |
Good job on not going for the burger fries and shake.
|
Just wanted to pop in quickly and wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving! I just have to keep telling myself that it's just one meal. I think I have my game plan figured out. But, after a glass of wine or two, it may all go out the window.
My poor car won't be back until Monday or Tuesday. With the holiday, he didn't even get a chance to look at it, but assures me that it's a quick fix, electrical in nature. Have a wonderful holiday with family and friends and try not to stress over food too much... tomorrow is another day. =) |
I've decided to blame the American Thanksgiving for my weight gain this morning.
Actually I feel like all the rain we are getting is seeping into my pores and filling me up like a sponge. Drinking water is a chore because I already feel saturated. I will put on my rain poncho and walk in an hour. Busy day ahead.
Water intake - 8 glass minimum Yes, No, Yes Serving sizes - All things in moderation Yes, No, Not quite, but closer 5 walks - 7 1/2 mile minimum Monday 2.5 Tuesday 1.5 Wednesday 1.75 Thursday 1.5 =.25 miles to go |
Still feeling waterlogged. Yesterday's walk was not for the faint of heart. Wind and rain pounding into my face for 1/4 mile.
Today, I slept in, but I am heading out in about 15 minutes. When I get back I am taking a hot shower and then off to get my blood work done for the month. Hope they find a vein without too many bruises. Water intake - 8 glass minimum Yes, No, Yes, Yes and then some Serving sizes - All things in moderation Yes, No, Not quite, Yes 5 walks - 7 1/2 mile minimum Monday 2.5 Tuesday 1.5 Wednesday 1.75 Thursday 1.5 Friday 1.5 = 8.75 miles |
I'm sorry ladies for Enzo's garbage. He's been taken care of. I can't guarantee that he won't be back under a different name. If you see a post the reeks of "Enzo" please immediately bring it to my attention... And DO NOT click the link.
I should have banned him when I first saw his link. I gave him a chance that I normally don't give because I saw he actually took the time to respond to the members... Unfortunately, I didn't take the time to read his replies. Once again, I'm sorry ladies and keep a watchful eye out for him. |
Libby, probably so. Or they are out shopping (waiting in long lines)
Quinniepoo, how 'bout dem Saints? I tried warning you. ;) |
Where is every body? Are you all hung over from Turkey Day?
|
I live in a house full of females. I've learned to stand my ground, I don't think it's possible to shrink mine. I'm sorry, I had to go there. :p
For some reason, my posts are appearing out of order. |
Mike, he helps me remember why I am doing this. I didn't click the links, but I researched and found his product lacking. And a little scary for someone with allergies.
Side effects for men are not promising. Something about shrinking testicles. Don't try it. |

For some reason, my posts are appearing out of order. I did well with my Thanksgiving dinner, but lost it when the desserts came out! Back on track today though. Did my Black Friday shopping late last night in -7 degree temps. I must be crazy! lol |
My posts have been out of order too. Strange how that happens. So good to see people posting. Here is a shout out to Hope, Mern, Debbie, Taubel and many more.
|
Sitting here logging my food as I watch my husband eat 3 plates of Thanksgiving left-overs, complete with 2 slabs of pie... really?? lol
|
Stay strong Quinn.
|
I got my revenge this morning. I'm down 1/2 lb. from the day before Thanksgiving, and he's up 5 lbs. =)
Stayed home yesterday (no car) and wrapped gifts all day. Was so pleased with myself for getting all of that out of the way early and then remembered my mom's Christmas birthday... ugh. So, I think I'll brave the stores and see what I can come up with. What's on this year's hot list for octogenarians?? lol |

I accomplished my weight loss goal this morning... 9 lbs. gone since November 1st. I'm back down to my maintenance weight now and my BMI is back down to under 21, which is where I'm most comfortable for my height.
Now, my next problem. I'll be hosting several college kids over Christmas. Some for a week, some for nearly a month. All remember the way that I used to cook when they were in high school and started to call me yesterday asking if I would make their favorites. Not sure how I'm going to handle buckets of goodies on the counter, but I'll just have to pull up my big girl panties and stick to a couple of low-cal substitutes for myself. I can't cancel their traditional Christmas because of my own needs, but I do have to cook it. Wish me luck! |
Congratulations on reaching your goal!
|
Congrats Quinn. That is wonderful news.
Rainbow, you have had a very good week as well with all the exercise and eating on plan. I better pull up my big girl panties and get to work. |
