Snack attack

I thought it would be good to have a thread about what we eat to satisfy a craving without going completely off the rails. Here's a few of mine:

Bored snacking: cup of hot tea, celery sticks, grape tomatoes, pomegranates in season. Cut em in half, pick out the seeds, takes forever to eat one :). Red grapefruit, peeled like an orange and then peel the segments one at a time. Can you tell I eat out of boredom a lot? lol

Salty snack: Claussen garlic dill spears (the refrigerated pickles by the lunchmeat)

Crunchy: celery sticks, Goldfish crackers, baby carrots

Fatty: String cheese sticks, peeled just a little at a time to make it last

Sweet: Small lollipop stolen from the kids, popsicles, Fudgesicles

almeeker 03-30-2010 10:32 PM

I could go for a snack right now. Man I'm starving. My fave snacks are:

Pudding cups, I usually get the Kozy Shack "no sugar added" variety, chocolate is my absolute favorite, but I generally eat the tapioca, because it has 30 fewer calories (70-100 calories depending on the flavor).

Carrot sticks dipped in veggie dip made out of Greek yogurt (150 calories).

Apple slices dipped in caramel flavored Greek yogurt, this is a great pick-me-up and around 200 calories, with a whopping 14 grams of protein to boot.

Micro popcorn, Act II 94% fat free - usually the whole bag unless I'm forced to share it (105 calories).

Frozen blueberries in vanilla honey yogurt (132 calories).

Small handful of nuts, usually almonds, but sometimes cashews (I like cashews better, but sometimes eating them makes the cravings worse). What I really want is to eat the whole can, so I have to be careful with them. First I measure out the amount (usually 1 oz), then close the can and put it back into the far back of the pantry cupboard and get a giant glass of water. Then I eat the nuts 1 at a time and take big gulps of water in between, and I won't let myself eat the last nut until the whole glass is gone (172 calories).

Tuna with a little squeeze of ff ranch salad dressing stuffed into fresh mushroom caps, sometimes broiled, sometimes cold - it's an acquired taste (approx 200 calories depending on the salad dressing).

Oranges, I usually go for an orange when I'm really hungry and craving something sweet. There are days I could eat it peel and all, but so far I've resisted that urge and managed to get the peel off beforehand (62 calories).

Can you tell I'm perpetually trying to get protein into my carb heavy life?

mushamell 04-28-2010 02:49 AM

my fave snacks:

tuna with a little miricle whip and mustard: I just eat it with a fork

glass of chocolate skim milk: satisfies the sweet tooth and the protien fills me up

veggie chips: so good, but not very filling

a fiber one bar or fiber plus bar: satisfies the sweet tooth and the protien fills me up

jenningslm 04-28-2010 03:40 AM

I try not to snack too much to keep my calorie count within my "budget" but if I am really craving a snack, I will eat Baked Kettle Chips. 170 calories for about 30 chips. You can eat half the large bag for 250 calories. For me chips and salty foods are what I crave and these are really good. They are real baked potatoe chips. Yummy.

tandoorichicken 04-28-2010 08:09 AM

Hmm...

salty snack - buffalo jerky (I try not get too much because it's expensive... :()

sweet snack - dark chocolate (like crazy dark, >85% - hard to eat a lot at once)

fatty snack - slice of real cheese (like from a wheel) or glass of whole milk; an avocado if I'm really hungry

finger foods - nuts and seeds

fruits/veggies - bananas, small citrus (clementines and minneolas are my favorites), carrots (what's up doc?), plums, pineapple chunks

...mmm :)

I eat hummus or salsa with veggies (nix the pita/tortilla chips to keep the calories down). I also like a slice of lunchmeat (just watch the sodium content) and a piece of low fat cheese with some mustard. Hard-boiled eggs are great too.

Coffee or hot tea are great fillers for me when I'm feeling snacky and don't have calories to play with.

bsaz 05-08-2010 10:19 AM

I struggle with this one too.

Jello Sugar Free puddings are about 60 cals per serving.
I also eat one square or mini bar of Vosges chocolate. It's good, and VERY expensive, so you don't need much. They have a Sugar Free Barcelona Bar (almonds and sea salt) that is wonderful.

Hot tea is a good one to stave off an attack.

Light cheese sticks, Jerky of some kind. Almond butter w/ apple slices.

Now I'm hungry.

missmatch76 05-12-2010 07:38 AM

Great thread!

Caramel yogurt with apple slices dipped in sounds great, will try that. Must try the dark choc too to see if it's true that you need less to satisfy your craving as chocolate is my downfall (along with wine). I do have a low-cal hot chocolate drink to try and resist.

My snacks are, apples, grapes, almonds, sugar free jello, yogurt, a couple of wheat crackers with an extra-light laughing cow cheese triangle (about 60 cals). I also do the hot tea/diet soda thing if I'm struggling for cals. Not very exciting, sorry! :/

blackrhino2 05-12-2010 07:50 AM

almeeker, tuna in mushroom caps sounds delicious to me.

-I drink a lot of herbal tea in the winter
-high fiber low cal crackers--certain Wasa brands
-any kind of veggie
-I generally bake 2 small sweet potatoes per week and use them as snacks
-glass of milk with vanilla and fake sugar in it--makes a great milk shake
-fat free yogurt mixed with fruit, cocoa powder, or vanilla--and maybe some splenda although I'm trying to cut back on my fake sugar intake
-25 calorie hot cocoa from swiss miss
-meat cold cuts--turkey breast, ham, or roast beef
-chickpeas
-sliced tomatoes
-grapefruit

m3rma1d 05-21-2010 03:29 AM

Here are some of my fave snacks:

- Hard boiled eggs
- Strawberries
- 1 square of really dark chocolate (only once in a while)
- Cucumber slices
- Frozen veggies (cooked :p)
- MORE WATER with lemon slices

I'm pretty new to this (Well, new to taking it really SERIOUSLY) so I hope I'm on the right track.

TNTTRINITY 06-01-2010 04:11 PM

Yummy snack

These little balls of heaven are EASY and HEALTHY* and AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS.

4 ingredients: walnuts (1 c.), dates (1 1/3 c.), cocoa (4T), vanilla (1t).

1 utensil: food processor, blender, magic bullet, whatever result: divine Takes under ten minutes to prepare from start to finish. Pull everything out of the pantry, blend, roll into balls. Done.
;):D

Almonds (no salt), Sunflower seeds (hulled) and Popcorn help get me through my snack attacks!

djbarker 06-14-2010 09:53 AM

My answer to the sweet snack craving

I dip a banana in the sugar free chocolate pudding it makes me think that I'm splurging by eating a chocolate covered banana. It is wonderful.

HippyLoveChild 06-14-2010 05:41 PM

MMM.. a cup of frozen strawberries in the food processor with ehh 3/4 cup vanilla soy milk! Yummy homemade ICE CREAM!!

And Watermelon (in season of course!)

AllisonRosen 06-15-2010 05:00 AM

These are great ideas!!

Mine that haven't been mentioned: sour French pickles called cornichons, olives (I love the big green Spanish cerignolas that take a few bites per pop), soy nuts, dried fruit and nut mix, chick pea or black bean salad, lemon red lentil soup, veggie soup, miso soup, edamame, a jolly rancher, Nips.

(the soups I make at home and bring to work)

syckgirlsfv 06-18-2010 07:45 AM

let's see...

I like to cut up a cucumber at night and squeeze a lemon over it along with chili powder and a little cayenne pepper, and let it refrigerate over night for the next day's snack.

handful of almonds
hot tea
apple w/teaspoon peanut butter
english muffin (wheat or sourdough) with teaspoon peanut butter
greek yogurt with frozen blueberries or strawberries
slice of lunch meat (sliced by butcher in deli) wrapped in romain lettuce leaf and slice of cheese
hard boiled egg with dollop of light mayo on top
sugar snap peas (raw)
celery w/light cream cheese or peanut butter
triscuits w/light cream cheese and slice of cucumber on top

that's all i can think of for now...this is the first time I've posted on Fitday, though I have been using it for years on and off...i just looked back at 4 years ago and saw that I was 8 pounds lighter, which is where I should be now :( I'm 5'8 and 158 pounds (with a lot of muscle as I do weight train 3 days a week) but in all honesty I think I should really aim for 145...

elisabethsmiles 06-21-2010 10:02 AM

One of my favorite snacks is Jello sugar-free fat-free pudding with fat-free coolwhip. I put it in little half-cup serving containers with a crumbled up low-fat graham cracker at the bottom. That really helps when I get sweet cravings. I also like to wrap up veggies (spring mix, cucumber, tomato, yellow peppers, etc) in a lite whole wheat tortilla with a wedge of lite Laughing Cow cheese (the herbed kind). Yum!

kcolville 06-22-2010 02:32 AM

I LOVVVVVE salsa- so a snack to me that is great is: white chedder rice cakes topped with a little salsa.

sarkai90 06-27-2010 02:09 AM

Lots of good ideas! I eat greek yogurt all the time, but it never occurred to me to make veggie dip with it! YUM!

Some of my favorite snacks (that I didn't see listed) are:

Alternative bagel w Laughing Cow light cheese wedge- 145 cal.
Hostess 100 calorie packs (the coffee cake is my favorite)
Low fat ice cream shake w almond milk, protein powder & flax (8 oz. for 200 cal.)
Frozen grapes
Peanut butter filled pretzels
Special K protein bars

collegefbfan8898 07-21-2010 01:24 AM

CHOCOLATE-PEANUT BUTTER NO BAKE BARS
Half cup 1% milk
8 tablespoons of Smart Balance (1 stick margarine; your choice)
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
Half cup of sugar (use less if desired) Splenda may work. I am not sure how it would equal out.
3 cups of oats
1 cup of all natty peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Mix milk, sugar, cocoa powder, and Smart Balance together. Bring it to a boil. Remove from heat.

Stir in the peanut butter, oats, and the vanilla extract. Stir until well combined.

Spread in a cake pan (9 by 13 or so).

Refrigerate at least 2 or 3 hours.

Cut into bars or just spoon out.

Thanks.

sterlingkiss 07-21-2010 05:00 AM

Who puts out the caramel flavored gk yogurt?

ravenplum 07-21-2010 11:52 AM

these can really fill me up:
smart dog or turkey dog (no bun)
deli turkey or chicken slices
low cal soup
apple
fat free cottage cheese w/ fruit

DiannaMiljour 07-23-2010 11:10 PM

as much sugar free jello as my heart desire. (there is nothing in it)
and
Pickles

Thats it... if you know of another snack with no sugar (carbs) or fat in it let me know.

Lizzycritter 07-24-2010 02:07 AM

I love this time of year, all kinds of fresh produce in season. Past few days I've been slicing a whole cucumber, spread it out to cover a plate, a little salt, and munch like potato chips. 19 calorie snack for TV and computer watching time, or on the side with a nice whole grain sandwich. So refreshing in this heat too. Blueberries are in season too, excellent popcorn replacement.

pmiller0324 07-24-2010 04:02 AM

Cucumber "chips"

If you like salsa, use your cucumber "chips" to it up. The crunch makes you feel like you are really eating the chips!:)

mambogirl81 07-24-2010 08:44 AM

sterlingkiss- The caramel greek yogurt is from Oikos. So far, I have only seen it in a four pack of smaller individual cups. I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard good things about it.

cjohnson728 07-24-2010 08:59 AM

Oikos makes a chocolate 4-pack as well; it's wonderful with raspberries or strawberries. I haven't been able to find the caramel...boo.

almeeker 07-24-2010 01:30 PM

I found the caramel Oikos at Meijer, it's so yummy with apple slices that I can't even type about it without wanting some....

mambogirl81 07-25-2010 01:31 PM

I just found the Oikos Caramel Greek yogurt at Target, and I'm eating right now! It is so good! The cups are a little small (4 oz.) because I am used to eating a decent size bowl of plain greek yogurt, and a bit pricey ($4.49/4 pack of 4 oz. cups), but I like it anyway! I will have to look for coupons and try the chocolate.

I can't wait to go home and be able to enjoy stuff like Greek Yogurt and Cottage Cheese again!

nana711 08-17-2010 04:26 AM

Yum!

Yogurt veggie dip and salsa on cheese rice cakes. Genius!!!!

I've been on a fairly restricted diet but at night when I get cravings I like low sodium veggie broth in a large coffee cup. It satisfies my salty cravings, fills me up, and is only 5 calories.

This could be a snack or a meal - whole wheat sandwich thins with a healthy spread of tomato paste (no HFCS), and a grilled veggie boca burger, with lettuce and onion. It's only like 210 in calories and satisfies that fastfood sandwich craving.

Breakstone's Liv Active 2% Cottage Cheese with dried chives or dill mixed in.

And of course, my favorite, 40 Spices Tribe Hummus. All Day. Any day.
