Frozen berries....man. I can easily go overboard on them more than anything I eat. I feel like there should be some kind of movement for mothers to give their kids bowls of blueberries instead of ice cream. It tastes freaking awesome and is JUST LIKE ice cream after you let it thaw a lil bit (3-5 min).

I've done a little searching online, but most websites list the same things I'm already eating.

Just looking for new ideas if anyone has them!

Have you tried soy nuts? They come in different flavors, and although they aren't on my top ten list of snacks they are a bit addictive in their own right.

We also like to make/eat frozen smoothie pops in this house. I just make up a batch of smoothies (with or without protein powder) and toss it into the popsicle maker. Actually in order to make smoothie pops, I have to make 2-3 batches of smoothies because the first couple get slurped down before they make it to the freezer. My kids hear a blender and they just come a running, I draw a crowd much faster than the ice cream man - seriously.

Right now this is my fave. I cant get them all year long but I went to our local farmers market this week and picked up some fresh organic fruit. If you're off the processed sugar then you know these are like candy. I indulged in three of these yesterday and fit day says a med. peach is only 35cal. If I'm craving a dessert I picked up a box of low cal "So Delicious" coconut milk ice cream sandwiches. 100cal/3.5g fat each. This is for the after dinner cravings and they are good very good.

HippyLoveChild 07-17-2010 07:28 PM

I love to snack on frozen veggies especially corn, broccoli and green beans! I eat them frozen which I know is a bit strange, but to me they taste better uncooked. It also helps with those ice cream cravings I get that cold icy illusion and they are much sweeter uncooked. I also love pickles. Popcorn is also a big one for me.

DiannaMiljour 07-23-2010 11:10 PM

as much sugar free jello as my heart desire. (there is nothing in it)
and
Pickles

Thats it... if you know of another snack with no sugar (carbs) or fat in it let me know.

I love this time of year, all kinds of fresh produce in season. Past few days I've been slicing a whole cucumber, spread it out to cover a plate, a little salt, and munch like potato chips. 19 calorie snack for TV and computer watching time, or on the side with a nice whole grain sandwich. So refreshing in this heat too. Blueberries are in season too, excellent popcorn replacement.

pmiller0324 07-24-2010 04:02 AM

If you like salsa, use your cucumber "chips" to it up. The crunch makes you feel like you are really eating the chips! :)

cjohnson728 07-24-2010 08:59 AM

Oikos makes a chocolate 4-pack; it's wonderful with raspberries or strawberries. I haven't been able to find the caramel...boo.

Also, I stir half a scoop of chocolate protein powder into some Greek yogurt and dip strawberries or bananas in it. You could stir some chopped almonds in if you don't want the carbs from the fruit.

Finally, peanut butter and other nut butters are my best friend (love them on celery). I can say in all honesty that one thing I did differently this time that I feel contributed to being able to finally lose the weight and keep it off, was to incorporate more healthy fats into my diet. I was always fat-phobic before, but the more research I did on monounsaturated fats, the more convinced I was that I needed to get them in, so PB it is! There is a brand called Naturally More that has even more protein than normal PB, and it's got other goodies like flaxseed in it as well.

nana711 08-17-2010 04:26 AM

- cold pickled beets
- black olives
- celery with a little peanut butter stuffed in it
- deviled eggs

Frozen Sugar Free Jello is my best friend!

It is so good especially on these hot South days. Us Southern Women get the Vabors!!!!!!:p

The little cups are just enough and taste like a nice treat. Gets you some extra water in too.:)

baltimoron 09-03-2010 02:21 AM

Yogurt veggie dip and salsa on cheese rice cakes. Genius!!!!

I've been on a fairly restricted diet but at night when I get cravings I like low sodium veggie broth in a large coffee cup. It satisfies my salty cravings, fills me up, and is only 5 calories.

This could be a snack or a meal - whole wheat sandwich thins with a healthy spread of tomato paste (no HFCS), and a grilled veggie boca burger, with lettuce and onion. It's only like 210 in calories and satisfies that fastfood sandwich craving.

Breakstone's Liv Active 2% Cottage Cheese with dried chives or dill mixed in.

And of course, my favorite, 40 Spices Tribe Hummus. All Day. Any day.

mtlgirl 09-03-2010 08:30 AM

I like ricotta cheese with cinnamon, a few apple slices and a teaspoon of agave nectar or stevia to sweeten. Half a cup of ricotta has about 140 calories and 16g of protein.

wannabefitgrl 09-04-2010 03:40 AM

oh, if you're not already having protein shakes, you could make thicker shakes (almost like a milkshake) as dessert. I love 1 1/2 cups nonfat milk, scoop chocolate protein powder, and a banana that I've cut up before hand and put in the freezer. The frozen fruit makes a thick shake. You can even add a TB of peanut butter for some extra flavor and creaminess. I make these and other kinds for breakfast most days and it literally feels like I'm having a milkshake for breakfast!

fletch8502 09-04-2010 01:22 PM

Cottage cheese with a little Splenda and cinnamon. I know it sounds disgusting, but don't knock it until you try it. =)

Snack combos

I am a huge fan of eating 5-6 mini-meals instead of 3 large meals. My blood sugar tends to drop quickly, and I get wicked crabby if I wait too long to eat! I also get headaches, dizzy, and just feel blah. If I eat every 3 hours, I avoid all of those yucky symptoms and also avoid making bad choices or eating too much!

My favorite mini-meals or snacks are:
- Cottage cheese with vegetables
- An apple with reduced-fat peanut butter
- Greek or low-carb yogurt with Fiber One and fruit
- Vegetables and hummus
- A smoothie with frozen fruit, yogurt, and a little juice (or peanut butter banana, yum!)
- Skim milk with protein powder
- Almonds with high-fiber cereal and raisins or other dried fruit (make your own trail mix)
- Mini-Baybel Light Cheese or Laughing Cow Cheese with high-fiber crackers

livingthedream2010 09-13-2010 12:45 PM

hi things i tend to snack on at work are
apple and cheese
yogurt
oatmeal
almonds
lean deli meats
i find any of these to satisfy my hunger between meals, i find eating them before i get too hungry to be helpful.

AmieTest 09-13-2010 04:59 PM

Snacks that work for me:

Carrots
Tomatoes
Rice cakes
Laughing cow light cheese
Lean Ham (sodium high though)

Wylie7 09-14-2010 01:09 AM

If I'm really hungry I usually pop a handful of almonds and that does the trick for an hour or two. The protein bars typically have a lot of calories, but will also do the trick. I started using them after a workout since I'm trying to maintain my weight right where I'm at. I also like carrots and hummus...

coastalcass 09-18-2010 06:06 PM

you know, I sometimes just boil a dozen eggs and keep them handy. I eat the whites and throw away the yolks. if you eat one white about every hour, you will not be hungry. It is only about 20-24 calories. And you can keep them in the frig at work in the carton. :]

Yes, people think i'm weird!

bobbienne 11-21-2010 06:58 AM

I like Kashi Go lean crunch...it is kind of granola-y.

loriparker 11-22-2010 01:50 AM

Snack recipe

For a delicious alternative to carmeled apples, try this:

Mix a 3 to 1 ratio of fresh ground organic dry roasted peanuts from Whole Foods (I posted the Nutrition information in the "Nutrition and Labels" catagory) to honey. you've just made "Poh Butter" (in honor of Winnie the Poh).

Cut an apple into slices. Dip the slices into the "Poh Butter" or, if it's too thick, just spread it on and . . . ENJOY!

This is an easy, healthy treat for boys and girls of any age, from 1 to 100! I hope you like it as much as I do. Let me know.

- PEACE -

rmdaly 12-09-2010 02:15 AM

I like the taste of graham cracker crumbs in my yogurt instead of granola. Since one is only about 60 calories it can be a real calorie saver. Yogurt, berries and graham crackers. Yum.

alleysgurl 02-03-2011 06:44 AM

I've always like the mini rice cakes by Quaker. My favs are the caramel, creme brule, ranch (taste just like a chip) and my new found fav the wild blueberry! OMW!! They are low in calories and fat and curb the sweet tooth as well as taste really good with coffee, if you're like me and enjoy tasty treats with coffee.
The husband just started replacing the ranch doritos with the ranch mini rice cakes.

pinenutcasserole 02-08-2011 03:39 PM

Soup. I usually add a splash of lemon juice, for flavour more than anything, but I've read that it can reduce hunger.

Salt bloats, it's true, but it also cuts hunger... Parents in my grandfather's poor, 'old country' village gave their children salt, or salty broths, to stop them asking for food. Blew my mind.

cjohnson728 02-22-2011 10:01 AM

Cucumber slices, carrot sticks, celery sticks fit the description...but how bleh! Dip in fat-free yogurt, maybe.

Air popped popcorn is carby but good for you and low cal.

Anything that takes a long time to eat, like nuts in the shell (I love pistachios), dry cereal (choose carefully), pomegranates.

Reduced fat cheese, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, hard boiled eggs, jerky, and tuna.

I snack on sliced turkey or chicken a lot; it's not technically a "snack food," but it helps me balance my carb-protein-fat ratio for not a whole lot of calories.

Almonds

Meggietye 04-04-2011 07:46 AM

Here is a simple snack or meal add on. I heat up my George Forman grill and put portabello or other med to large size mushroom pieces on it to cook about 5-10 min (check them), I don't use oil but you could. When they are cooked thru put them on a plate, close together, lay 1 roasted red pepper (from a jar or you cook your own) on top and break feta cheese all over it. I heat it in the microwave on high for 30 seconds and voilą!! It is super colorful and meaty and satisfying to nosh on.;)

I buy a bottle of pickled roasted red peppers in the pickle aisle for about 6.00 Canadian and a container of goat feta cheese for the same, 6.00. I use whatever mushrooms look best, sometimes portabello sometimes white 'button' . If you are new to feta cheese be sure to dump the water it comes in and refresh the tub every second day or so to keep it fresh. :)

Snack Combo

My commute home has been a minefield, walking to the subway past bakeries who exist to tell me how hungry I am, and how I deserve a treat because I worked hard today.

I've figured out a food I can have at 3 PM which works great to keep me from gobbling at 5:30. On Sunday, I pack up five of these bags - and take one for each day, it really works to keep the trip home monsters at bay....

3 dried plums (51 Calories)
8 raw almonds (56 calories)
12 squares of Shredded Oat Cereal (60 Calories).

You could use craisins, or raisins if you wish. The plums appeal to me, and yes, they are prunes, but the marketers want to change that association.

The cereal has more sugar than I'd like, I'll try switching to shredded wheat squares when I next buy a box.

Hope this helps!

Abby

Variation on Abby's Snack Combo

I have a variation on that:

1 oz peanuts (160 cal)
1/2 serving raisins or craisins (65 cal)

This is more calories than the one above, but it is great in the afternoon when I get a little over-hungry. The salt from the peanuts, the sweet from the dried fruit kind of get all my cravings and the fat takes the edge off the hunger. You do have to measure it out, otherwise it is too easy to overdo.

RunbikeSki 05-20-2011 10:23 AM

Hard boiled eggs are a great PM stack. About 80 cals apiece, great protein and some fat to slow the digestion so they tend to hold me until suppertime.

Also, I'm a big jerky fan. Beef, turkey, ostrich, salmon... whatever. Also dairy, especially cheese. Those little laughing cow cheese triangles have 35 or 50 cals and are lovely w/o a cracker or bread. Also the baby bells are somewhere around 75 calories. I eat a lot of 1% cottage cheese. Often with dices veggies or sliced fruit.

Kathy13118 05-21-2011 06:32 AM

For fiber, GG crackers are - well, they are pure bran, basically - very filling. Fiber is very satiating. What happens when I eat a GG cracker (you can find them at Whole Foods or buy them at Amazon) with some peanut butter: I am no longer hungry.

ripemango 07-07-2011 06:02 PM

olives...5 lil 1s are a great snack for me.

homemade granola or a brand that is healthy is good too. oats r so good 4 you and the 'right' kind of carbs. sunflower seeds, pecans and/or almonds are in there as well so u get protein.

edamame (immature soybeans). just boil in salted water. yum

avocado. w so much in season i'd toss some diced avocado w tomatoes, onions n cucumbers. make a quick cilantro vinaigrette (olive oil base) and u r good too good. i really like avocado w turkey or chicken as well. veg soup w diced avocado put in right before serving. very mexican thing to do w avocado n so delicious/nutritious it's worth a try....if ya like avocados.

Rubystars 07-07-2011 10:22 PM

I like 1/4 cup of cashews, that has 160 calories I think. And I like Kroger Carb Master Yogurts, 60 calories per yogurt cup and they have some good flavors. A whole can of starkist tuna in water is 100 calories if you drain it and don't add anything to it and just eat it out of the can with a fork.

boolz 07-08-2011 12:13 PM

I'll just add goji berries.

Florida Ray 07-10-2011 05:08 AM

This is probably not a good idea for many, but a few salted peanuts seems to help me when I am hungry late at night. I know some people are allergic to peanuts and others will eat too many. But I just eat a small amount and drink some diet green tea or a diet soft drink and it stops my hunger for a while.

azazelsfyre 07-17-2011 12:27 AM

Buffalo jerky

wolfbane20 07-17-2011 03:31 AM

3oz can of tuna and celery or 3 whole grain crackers. Can of Kipper snacks. Fish may have more fat but it is the good fat and the high protein will keep you full longer

Kumochi 08-01-2011 12:41 AM

I use a whey protein shake when I need something to sustain me. I will make them up from the powder and take it to the office. 120 calories with water , more with 1% milk. Helps to make up for having to have a late meal and often I'll find I'm not really very hungry when I get time for dinner.

vabeachgirlNYC 08-10-2011 05:24 AM

I eat celery with sunflower seed or soy butter. I just try not to dip into the jar so I don't end up eating more than I want.

Liquid eggs with salsa is super low cal but a ton of protein.

I also try to cut up a bunch of veggies to snack on all week.

Puffed brown rice or red wheat puffs mixed into greek yogurt is really good. It's way less cals than granola but gives me the crunch! I want!

A really low cal treat I like is sugar/gelatin free jello with cool whip! I'm a low carber but if my macros are good I will slice a peach and eat it with cool whip too!

I usually eat late at night and if I want something sweet I take two pieces of 50 cal ww bread, dip them in liquid egg whites to make french toast in a nonstick pan and then drizzle a 1/2 serving of sugar free syrup over them. Sometimes I sprinkle with a little cinnamon for a grand total of 145 calories, 2g fat, 25 carbs and 14g protein.

lalagoe 08-10-2011 11:45 PM

I'm a big fan of veggies and hummus. (fresh green beans, sweet peppers, snap peas dipped into whatever flavor hummus you desire. My favorites are the garlic or roasted red pepper :) Fresh fruit is a great snack but then you have the sugar - natural sugars of course, but still extra carbs.
I'll also have some chocolate soy milk if I get an irrational craving for some chocolate. Surprisingly yummy.

VitoVino 09-15-2011 02:19 AM

An 8 ounce glass of vegetable juice (low sodium and 50 cals.) first, and then hot air popcorn (with sprayed 'butter') does the trick for me, every time.
