Foods you've liked, foods you've hated...

You've tried some brand new foods by being on your diet/lifestyle change. So what foods did you wind up liking and which ones did you realize you couldn't tolerate (and will never eat/drink them again because they're either so nasty tasting or you got a bad reaction from them)?

I'll start off.

New food I liked: Nutritional Yeast. Found out it's not only healthy, but it has a pleasant cheesy taste.

New food I hated: Agave Nectar. Just plain disgusting tasting. It even smells nasty to me. After trying it 2-3 times, I tossed the jar in the garbage. I'm not in the habit of throwing out foods!

cjohnson728 12-18-2011 12:57 PM

Cool, I'll play.

New foods I liked: Greek yogurt. It's so good, and packs big protein. I'll never eat regular yogurt again! High-fiber low carb tortillas...Ole Extreme Wellness. They're nice and soft and I use them as wraps, with Mexican food, baked, salted and cut up for tortilla chips, and baked with spray butter and cinnamon sugar for a sweet treat. Agave nectar goes on my "like" list. I don't care for it so much "straight" but I use it in margaritas :o and I love to bake with it.

New foods I hated: La Tortilla Factory high-fiber low carb tortillas. I feel like I'm chewing on wood when I eat these! Flatout Crisps...ditto on the wood. I eat them occasionally, though, cause as a crunchy snack, they're pretty healthy.

You've jogged my memory! Oh yeah, Greek yogurt. I've only had it since the lifestyle change, and I've liked it as well. I haven't found a particular flavor or brand yet that makes it stand out above regular yogurt, but once I do, it will probably become more of a favorite for me. Any recommendations?

How did I ever forget the High Fiber Ole Extreme Wellness? Heck, I even mention them in my recipe on this site. Never had them before, and I LOVE them. Have you tried my recipe yet for the chicken, bean, and brown rice? It goes great with these tortillas, especially the sun dried tomato flavored ones.

If I baked, I suppose the agave would be a keeper for me. But I tried it with my iced tea and with oats, and yuck. I suppose it would be a winner in baking however.

Interesting. I haven't tried La Tortilla brand. Glad I didn't. :D

Never had Flatout Crisps, doesn't sound too good either unless one is a woodchuck or a beaver. :D

Thanks for playing!

Trying new fruits and veggies.

I am trying new fruits and veggies. I added mangos, pomagrates recently. Cactus pear was interesting. I came across a really good salad idea; spinach, pear and pomagrate with homemade honey mustard dressing. I find I am cooking more things fresh, instead of buying already prepared foods or take out.
I do get the unsalted corn chips, as I am trying to cut out salt and sugars.

VitoVino 12-19-2011 12:16 AM

The salad idea sounds really good. And it's always a great idea to cut out salt and sugars. :)

And welcome to FitDay!

Pu-erh tea - it is supposed to support weight loss - for me it worked that day - I drank a cup and I found the taste so horrible that I wished I never had to drink or eat again.

Have you tried flavored pu-erh teas? I bought the Skinny Chai Pu-erh that Teavana carries and found it was a lot nicer than unflavored pu-erh (which tends to be rather earthy/dirty tasting). I also enjoy mixing it with green tea (I have a lovely green tea with ginger that I drink daily)--it mellows out the odd flavor and you still get the weight-loss benefits of pu-erh, plus all the lovely things that green tea comes with.

New Foods I've loved

Mashed Cauliflower - I never need mashed potatotes again

Spaghetti Squash with Marinara - not as good as pasta, but pretty good!

Mangoes - I've always loved them, but I'm eating more of them.

Not really a new food, but enjoying much more often - plain yogurt with fruit cut up in it.

Tzatziki (yogurt and cucumber sauce - it's awesome!)

Dr. Pragers Spinach Pancakes - I try to avoid too many prepared foods, but these make for a quick dinner supplement - next to a piece of fish.

What have I hated?

Fat free balsamic vinegrette - they fill it with sugar, make your own!

The time my husband made chili with way too many peppers - and I like hot food!

Stewart's Diet Root Beer - don't try it - drink water!

This is fun

ToriD1012 12-27-2011 07:10 AM

New foods I love--Basa....a little lime marinade and thrown on the grill and it was MMMMDelish

New foods I hate--baked sweet potatoes. UGH!!! I was never a sweet potato fan as a child, but our tastes change as we age so I thought what the heck I'll try again. Really wishing I hadn't. It was mushy and bland and just plain G to the ROSS!!

Kyra2012 12-27-2011 11:30 AM

Torre - thanks for the advice. I haven't thought of mixing tea, but I I'll give it a try - the tea I got was from a Chinese tea store.

wildbeanerz 12-28-2011 02:09 AM

Tori...I'm the opposite. I love baked sweet potatoes! I am going on a search soon to find fresh sweet potatoes that are of a decent size to bake. All the ones I see at the store are the huge yam looking things.

VitoVino 12-28-2011 02:23 AM

April, when you say "bake" do you mean oven or microwave? They come out fabulous in a microwave, it's the only way I cook them. One weighing a pound will cook complete in 11-12 minutes.

wildbeanerz 12-28-2011 02:32 AM

Microwave :D

VitoVino 12-28-2011 03:02 AM

Well, I'm old enough to remember when microwaves first hit the market. So I still consider gas/electric ovens as "conventional" and still distinguish between them. I've got some friends the same age as me and just this summer I had to show them how great microwaves were for baking potatoes. :D

wildbeanerz 12-28-2011 03:09 AM

I have never baked a potato in an oven. I love using the microwave for that. Or better yet wrapping in foil and putting in the fire at camp! Yum!

Do you buy your sweet taters by the pound? Ours seem pretty expensive and like I said, they are huge too.

VitoVino 12-28-2011 04:29 AM

Since I eat a sweet potato almost every day, I usually wind up buying them about 5 pounds at a time. I get big ones, ones that are 350-500 grams (450 grams is a pound). I can eat one of these biggies, along with 4 tbsp of non fat sour cream, and I wind up getting most of my days potassium (especially if I sprinkle "No Salt") along with a good deal of fiber and magnesium.

I never really ate them much before except at Thanksgiving. Now I eat them a lot and have given up eating white potatoes pretty much.

christine1109 12-31-2011 03:40 AM

I wanted to comment on a few foods I specifically saw mentioned in this thread. First, Dr. Praeger's pancakes -- I am NOT a spinach fan, so only tried these ONCE, about eight years ago, but I have been eating the broccoli pancakes for YEARS and absolutely LOVE them. They were initially a bit smaller when I first started buying them but now they're made larger and each pancake is a bit more calorically dense. They are SO SO SO good. I wish I liked spinach; I love just about every green imaginable, but I have tried and tried to like spinach and just don't like the taste. I eat a lot of greens raw that I've only seen cooked in recipes and on cooking shows - i.e., kale, dandelion greens, etc. But I can't tolerate raw spinach in a salad either. And I eat two large salads of various greens every day.

Greek yogurt - YES. I buy the Fage 2 percent plain, or alternatively, I buy my store brand low fat plain yogurt, which is a bit less calorically-dense than the Fage 2 percent, and I do buy the Fage 0 percent fat as well. I defrost one serving of frozen mixed berries (140 grams) and mix those into the plain or Greek yogurt, with a packet of Splenda. When the berries start to melt, they form a wonderful berry "juice" that mixes into the yogurt and this is a FANTASTIC breakfast some days. LOVE it. PS: I REALLY don't like the Chobani Greek yogurts. As for flavored Greek yogurts, I DO like one Chobani flavor, the Pineapple, but it's a 2 percent yogurt, NOT a fat free, and it's a bit carb-dense so I don't often buy it (I have Type 1 diabetes and try to use modest amounts of insulin to cover carbs; most of my meals are greens/salad and protein, except breakfast).

One other food that someone mentioned are sweet potatoes. I have NEVER understood the concept of eating those Thanksgiving dishes made with candied sweet potatoes with every sort of sweetened addition imaginable. Since I was a young child, we always served baked sweet potatoes at Thanksgiving, and that's the ONLY way that I've ever eaten them. The most I will do is add a TINY bit of butter, but I don't like butter on REGULAR potatoes either and typically just dress it with salt and pepper. But they are SO delicious and the single most healthy food in the produce department from what I've read and heard. Oh, but they are ENORMOUS these days. I cannot find a normal size potato -- they're like apples; they're on steroids, they're so huge. But they're a great food but again carb-dense so I eat them only occasionally.

Hi Ms Beanerz.
Try using the oven some time... it is a subtle, but a true baked potato, or sweet potato is yummier, IMO.

The one food I have tried (several times) to adopt is those "thin buns" by various bakeries. I just don't like the flavor. Something about them tastes chemically to me. And when I try to toast them they turn to crackers. Which would be OK if I wanted a cracker, but as a bread substitute, I just can't do it

cjohnson728 01-06-2012 02:57 PM

I agree, Pam. I've also tried them several times and they seem to be very tasteless to me. I prefer the tortillas as mentioned above, or even one of the high fiber bread or English muffin varieties.

Rubystars 01-06-2012 10:32 PM

I don't like Miracle Noodles but I eat them anyway because they fill me up for low calorie cost.

In addition to fruits and vegetables which I've been eating more of I found out I like Weetabix. 3 biscuits is a great breakfast in some hot milk.

That's my most recent discovery.

Hi, very new to this site - love baked potato! What do you put on then as a low fat, calorie option to me smothering them with butter cheese bacon and sour cream???

Joyell 01-10-2012 01:45 PM

Have you tried salsa?

losinflab 01-13-2012 11:20 PM

Try plain yogurt. Some ppl like non fat sour cream, but haven't tried that.

I'm kind of down on a lot of new..."better eating foods".Many are made up...out of who knows what? & have a dreadful taste/texture. Maybe it's just my taste tho.

Have came back to eating more & more of real foods, just less of them.I divide a regular cake mix in half & "frost" with Cool Whip.Baking sweet potatoes & using lots of cauliflower.Making soup with every veggie in home made broth.

Turnips are a new find, use diced in soup or like a boiled potato.Egg white omelet using one yolk & several whites with whatever veggies I've stir fried first.Good hummus, different teas,a tsp of olive oil with a couple splashes of rice vinegar on salad, sticking with healthy foods when we eat out.:)

Nothing earth shaking, but I'm a work in process & slowly, slowly ...works for me.

liquidlizard 01-14-2012 04:07 PM

I have not tried any thing to crazy so not too may dislikes:

Likes:

sugar snap peas
plain fat free greek yogurt, (call me crazy I know it's pretty sour)
chicken, chicken and more chicken
mustard (I've always loved it, but using it more now since it's very low cal)
raw spinach, just to nosh on, no dressing, really fills me up
spinach and lettuce in hot water with a lot of salt and pepper, kind of a soup
Berries from local warehouse/membership store, a lot cheaper then regular store and I don't feel like I have to ration them
Half as much peanut butter, salad dressing, or cream cheese as I used to use before, still get the tast without all the calories.

Dislike:

stevia (i'm not really that into sweets anyway)
cheese by itself as a snack (I like the taste but it doesn't fill me up enough to justify the calories)

zyxst 01-15-2012 09:08 AM

While visiting a friend this afternoon, I tried a few flavors of hot tea (camomile, mint and green) and now can say I don't like hot tea.

:(
I love chocolate but it no longer likes me. Ii have a had a few migrians now and then since I was in my 20's. When I went through menopas(sp) I started having more. I started having to get fmla for those days I woke up with a headach.
I started paying attention to what I ate then had a headache start. THe biggest trigger next to stress is chocolate. Does any one else get headaches if the eat chocolate or other foods. I also find I have to keep hydrated or I can get one and if I don't get enough sleep.
I love fresh veggies. I went and dug some carrots out in the green house today. I like some veggies better raw then cooked.
I don't like squash much unless I can hide in something, except zucchine -breaded and fried.

Depending on how they're cooked, I can get migraines with tomato products. The biggest culprit is pizza sauce from certain restaurants.

almeeker 01-15-2012 11:31 PM

Likes: almond milk, mio to flavor some of that water I drink (peach mango and peach tea), almond extract in my coffee, flaxseed, flaxseed meal, TVP, hake, Greek yogurt, flat out wraps, slim buns (slimwiches).

Dislikes: Gorton's tilapia fillets sooooo yucky, vanilla soy isolate protein powder (aka gypsum dust bleck), zero calorie chocolate sauce, wheat germ

I've been dieting on and off for years, so most of the foods I've tried over and over again, but I have tried a few new ones in the past 2 years. Can't say why the Gorton's tilapia fillets are so awful but even my husband couldn't choke them down and he's really not a fussy eater. I will never buy the soy protein powder again, I've never enjoyed drywall dust, especially as a dish to pass. There are a whole line of those 0 calories sauces, chocolate, maple syrup, a whole host of salad dressings, every one I tried was awful, tasted like chemicals. I don't know what it is about wheat germ, I know it's good for you but it just tastes like old saw dust to me, and nothing seems to cover up that taste either. I made bran muffins and put molasses in them and still all I could taste was the wheat germ. Gag me.

I actually happen to love the slim buns, we usually get the Pepperidge Farm brand or Aunt Millies, honey wheat or 7 grain. Our youngest child will choose those any day of the week over bread of any kind. Crazy but true. On the Mio, strawberry kiwi is on my list of "dislikes" but most of the rest of the flavors were fine, the peach ones however are the best.

I love oven baked potatoes (white or sweet) I get them at restaurants. My favorite is the sweet potatoes with a little bit of butter and cinnamon & brown sugar.

I get a thin bun at work. It is made by European Bakeries. It is a multigrain and has 90 cals. Everyone in my family absolutely loves them. I don't know that you can buy them other than in my situation where they are sold to restaurants. And you can toast them and they are even yummier! One of my fave snacks at night is a tomato & lettuce sandwich on a toasted thin bun.

They make a good base for quick mini-pizzas, too.

I love baked potatoes and sweet potatoes in the oven. I eat the skin of white potatoes but not sweet, and I just like the way it's crispier in the oven than the microwave.

As for not-likes, I thought those "fake" noodles (the Japanese no-calorie noodles) were horrible. I agree with the above poster that sometimes it's just better to eat smaller portions/healthier substitutes for things you like, rather than stuff loaded with artificial ingredients that pretend to taste like the real thing.

losinflab 01-17-2012 12:00 AM

I also get migranes & have to stay away from all artifical sweetners. Not hard, cause plain sugar is very low cal & just a little works for me.I eat /drink nothing with artifical sweetners...no SF food/drinks of any kind. Recently, peppermint has been linked to migranes, but I seldom have any peppermint.

"Diet" foods I love: Raw fruits and veggies. Once you cook them, forget it. I just can't get enough and they make me feel good too! Watermelon, cherries, tangerines, romaine lettuce, rucola (love, love, love it!), spinach baby carrots, cucumbers, gala apples, snow peas, celery (it's really good if you cut it up and chill it for a day in the fridge in a big bowl of ice water). I could gnosh on these things all day. I rarely ate them before I decided to change my eating habits but now I'm hooked. I've actually been thinking about eating nothing but raw fruits and veggies for two weeks to see if it helps accelerate my weight loss.

"Diet" foods I loathe: Broccoli (hot or cold, yuck!) Fat-free cheese (tastes like plastic, why waste the calories?), any Lean Cuisine dinner (are they trying to overdose me with salt? Not to mention I could eat way more to come up with 300 calories than these tiny portions. Give me a fresh salad topped with tuna any day over one of these!) Stevia (I know, I know it's good for me, and I really am trying to make it through the huge bag I bought, but it just is the wrong kind of sweet)

Foods I miss Oh Cheesecake how I miss thee!!! We had a good run, but I just can see you any more.

Amen, sister! I totally agree! There is a lot to be said for real food.

rpmcduff 01-17-2012 07:21 AM

A recent addition at our house is Swai fish. We had it the other night for the first time and found it to be delicious. I sprinkled it with lemon pepper and broiled it in the oven (my favorite for salmon also). It is mild, moist and an almost buttery flavor. It is also one of the least expensive fish options.

wildbeanerz 01-17-2012 07:44 AM

I had my first Greek Yogurt yesterday and I have to say....I liked it! I am buying more today. Yesterday's was Chobani strawberry 0%. What I am getting today will be Dannon strawberry (on the bottom) 0% fat.

crazigerl 01-17-2012 03:49 PM

OMG I tried my first one today. Took a bit out of my calorie total but quite worth it. Has anyone frozen it and tried it that way?

I do have to say I'm enjoying my sardines on whole wheat toast. Some of you will gag but as I was born in England it is a typical fish to have. Great protein and carb combo.

I hated Kale chips. Rather eat raw kale. Hate tofu.

RunbikeSki 01-19-2012 11:01 AM

After several tries I have decided that I don't particularly care for quinoa. I don't hate it, and it is OK mixed in with other stuff as a protein boost, but as a side dish (ala rice, couscous, etc) it just doesn't work for me.

fit4luv 01-22-2012 01:04 PM

Newbie Here ~ Here's a response based on my short, short journey with you lovely people.

Foods I Like:
1. Cooked Cabbage! I forgot about this until my mother fixed some for me. This surprised me of how much I like this - you can flavor it with a wide variety of flavors.

2. Lettuce Salad - cut up. I found out that for some odd reason I do so much better with tiny & cut up veggies when it comes to salads. I love to put it into sandwiches to make it nice, yummy & crunchy. Also, you can make salads beautiful with different shades of greens, reds, purples. I do NOT consider myself a veggie lover, but am finding ways to meet my veggie challenge.

3. Greek Yogurt - Love this. I do love yogurt anyhow. Dairies are easy for me.

4. Rediscovered Sweet Potato -- and liking it just heated up in microwave & even without topping.

Foods I hate/dislike: Fish -- I'm not a fish person. But I aim to learn to like fish. My family says they like the way I fix the fish with lemon juice sprinkled and a particular mixture of "fish herbs". Maybe by next year I can learn to like certain fish.

If you aren't a "fishy fish" type of person then try something mild. Tilapia, flounder and even catfish are very mild. They take to different types of cooking techniques and can be seasoned just about any way you want. I personally LOVE all kinds of seafood, so adding more fish to my diet was a no brainer.
