Adding Supplements

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to add supplement information to my food log. I figured the best way to do it was to add it as a new food.

When I added the Caltrate that I take, all of the amounts were out of whack (like double), and I can't figure out how to adjust this.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

:)

I am also trying to figure out how to add suppliments. I take glucosamine chondroitin, flaxseed oil, and a centrum daily.

Bumping!

I am also looking for a free way to track many nutrients, including all omega's. Is there anything out there?

Thanks!

peorth 06-24-2010 01:13 AM

exactly, i'm lactose intolerant, so i want to plug in my calcium supplements and can't figure out how to do it, as the nutrients need to be added by % rather than by mg and ui.

since no one is coming up with the solution, everyone should email thier feedback and ask for a solution. Email: [email protected]

Ability to create custom vitamins and supplements

I just want to add my voice to the list requesting this addition to the software. I take a lot of vitamins and supplements and I would like to see if I am overdoing it with some of them. It is great that they have the vitamins and minerals on the custom food creation, but there is a lot missing. I also question the absence of a 'Sugar' ingredient. I use the 'Alcohol' to record the sugars in my foods so I look like I'm doing a lot of drinking when in fact I'm a teetotaler. Why is Sugan missing when it is on all the food labels?

Sugar isn't listed separately from carbohydrates because carbs are sugar. Simple carbohydrates cause the same spikes in blood sugar levels regardless of the amount of sugar listed on the nutrition label.

Also, sugar alcohols found in some foods are not the same as alcohol, so you shouldn't be entering your sugar intake under the alcohol section. That's only intended for alcoholic beverages. As long as you're entering your carb and fiber intake, you don't need to enter the sugar separately.

I saw it explained more in depth on another thread because someone else had the same question, but I can't remember where I saw it.

Good idea. I just sent one. Will let the board know if/when I get a reply.

Pantathenic Acid

Pantathenic Acid is one of nutrients tracked by Fitday on the Nutrition tab of the FOODS screens. Yet when I create a custom food, I am not allowed to enter this figure? I tried loading up my multi-vitamin as a custom food, which includes 500% of RDA for pantathenic acid. Yet I can't enter this. Would like to see this capability added to the custom food screen, since Fitday DOES calculate it for all the foods in the database. Seems like if you're gonna track the nutrient at all, you'd also give users the ability to load that data for their custom foods as well.

Buttoni 09-19-2010 06:27 AM

I load all my supplements up as %, which is provided on the labels of all the ones I take. Works for me!

Buttoni 09-19-2010 06:31 AM

I'd also like to be able to enter the Pantathenic Acid for a CUSTOM food, like entering my multi-vitamin. Can't do that on the CUSTOM entry screen either! :(

B5

Did anyone figure this out? I would like to track my B5 intake as well....

Mattlk13 10-12-2010 03:38 AM

I agree to you figure anything out???

cathy586 10-12-2010 07:40 AM

Yes, thanks for the email address. I am sending several now.

Kohsamui 10-13-2010 06:21 AM

Also agree, should also be tracking folic acid (vit B7?), same idea, plus everyone seems to agree that we need to have lots...

Vitamins and Supplements

I take a GNC Greens Multivitamin that supplies the IU and the % of the vitamin, so I just put the % in as a custom food. Some of the things on my GNC label are not on the "nutrition food label" - so some things are not counted in - like the Panothetic Acid, Folic Acid, etc. Also I take Fish Oil and I just add the calories for it to the custom food, so it is just tracked in my food log and as calories eaten. I also take a GNC Calcium-Magnesium-Vitamin D-3 Vitamin and I add it as a % and it's tracked in my food log. That was the only way I could figure how do include them and track them.;)

slbfitday 11-04-2010 07:11 AM

I found a way to "fake track" Pantothenic Acid.

I created a custom food based on a food I found with it in it.
Then cleared all values in the Nutrition Facts.

When I add it to my foods for the day, I make the amount of the serving enough to add up to as close to 100% as I can get it. It took some fooling around using blank future days and now it works well.

I am taking Theragram and it contains 100% of my Pantothenic Acid requiement, but it was not showing up in the reports and it was not in the Set Nutrition Goals items avaliable.

For my Theragram I also created a custom food, as well as my daily Magnesium, Calcium and Vitamin A supplement.

I cannot track B7 or Vitamin K, both of which are essential nutrients.

I do wish that fitday had more categories for motitoring different vitamins and supplements. I take a pretty normal daily vitamin, and a third of the nutrients aren't even listed! Leaving out stuff like folic acid is especially egregious, considering how important it can be for pregnant women, and not even having an input section for caffeine? I tend to take in way too much caffeine, but have trouble keeping track of it when it comes to foods and drinks other than coffee.

As it is, I made up the supplement adding what information there was room for and try to take care of the rest by just doing the math based on the vitamin bottle, but I'm sure that some of these nutrients show up in the food I eat, especially things like vegetables that don't come with nutritional information.

Considering the demographic, it's reasonable for Fitday to focus on people who are trying to lose weight, gain muscle mass, work on general cardiac health, or do important but common things like monitor their cholesterol or sugar intake. I just wish there were more options here for people who have specific but less common nutritional needs and goals.

Not calculating vitamins correctly

I take two supplements, and I entered them into the "custom foods" category. One of them provides 50% of Vitamin A (among other things) and the other supplies an additional 50% of Vitamin A. However, when I enter these in my food log, Fitday does not recognize that I have taken them for Vitamin A purposes (although it does seem as though it recognizes the other vitamins in these supplements). That just seems bizarre. Am I doing something wrong?

01gt4.6 12-21-2010 01:04 PM

did you click the tab for %-RDA/AI Graph?

I just tried it and it shows my vitamin, but the percentages are off. You may be able to tweek it.

Adding supplements with "create food" feature

Hi
I'm new - just a couple of days but I am liking this and finding it is keeping me on track and making the calorie counting sooooooo much easier.
I've been adding my vitamin supplements by creating them.
Is there a way to get a customize-able field to add a vitamin (specifically folic acid B9)?
Note to any developers moderating this thread: If not, is there any way to give us one?
Thanks

schlemoc 01-20-2011 08:45 AM

Even with this site being geared towards people who are trying to loose weight, I find it severely lacking in terms of tracking supplements. I take amino acids, glucosamine, l-carnitine, and a few others. I can't track any of them since there isn't even an amino acid category.

The interesting thing is that the serious body builder is going to be paying close attention to their amino acid intake. Secondly, any vegetarian needs to make sure they are getting all 9 amino acids that aren't produced by our body. Both applications would set fitday apart from the other nutrition sites. I would really like to get some input on this from the mods.

Suggestion so we can add our multi vitamins to custom foods

I think it would be great if you could add your multi vitamin in to see if it really does top off the nutrition you get from food..I tried to put it in as a custom food, but the measurments arent the same in all the nutrient categories on fitday or the vitamin. Would be great if they had a section to do this, where you can choose which measurment you want to use for each nutrient you put in so it's easy. I can't do that math to figure it all out!:)

Also there should be a "favourites" List, where you can put all your favourite and most commonly used foods. Kinda like the custom and recent foods but just a favourites section!

VirusInside 01-21-2011 06:48 AM

I'm also having trouble with this. I take a daily Centrum, and I add it to my food log by punching in the Percentages. Yet when it shows up in my log, the percentages are way higher than they should be. I thought I was getting more Vitamins that I should be getting, but now I'm thinking it's not adding up right.

For example, today, my vitamin b12 level was showing as zero. I took my Centrum, and added it to my food log, and instead of showing up as 100 percent, it shows up as 250 percent!

Am I doing something wrong?

I find that not having Sugar on there is an issue. That is very important to me as I'm trying to keep my sugars way down....I'm hopeful at some point it will be added!

katemartins58 02-07-2011 02:59 AM

I have noticed a similar problem. I put chicken liver down, which according to fitday contains significant Vit A and cholesteral, but neither shows up in my Nutrition tab.

Chickenwings31 02-14-2011 10:06 AM

I have been trying to add multi vitamins into fit day. But in fit day for custom food it says % and on my bottle of multi vitamins it will say for example "Vitamin A 300mcg/1000IU" or "Vitamin C 90 mg" How do I convert mcg and mg into a percent?!?! Does anyone have an idea how to add these into the custom food? Thanks!

01gt4.6 02-14-2011 02:39 PM

I've never seen a multi that didn't list the % of RDA. What kind are you taking?

Go in 'Nutrition' and there you'll see how much is the 100% of each vitamin. If you see that 60mg is 100% of vitamin C, then 1% is 0.6 and your 90mg is 150% of RDD.
60/100=0.6
90/0.6=150%

Being Able to Log Supplements

I would like to see a way to enter information about vitamin supplements. Without this, the "Total Nutrition" report is inaccurate. For example, a Total Nutrition report may show that one didn't take in enough Vitamin D over a certain period, when in fact that person was taking a daily Vitamin D supplement and was therefore getting enough of the vitamin.

I am also having a similar problem. I tried entering my vitamins by ceating a "custom food" called Vitamins. But the percents I enter don't seem to carry thru to the logs properly.

For instance if I entered
vitamin A - 50%
V itamin C -100%

It shows up as
vitamin A - 24%
vitamin C - 67%

Seems like the % entered under "custom food" is not the same % as % of RDA.

Kumochi 02-28-2011 04:49 AM

I enter my supplements as a custom food and enter the units not the %. It works for most of them. Mary

That's a great idea! :D

Of course being able to log and have an accurate % would be easier but until then, your way, will work for me! :)

this is an issue iv been asking for few years.....this program ha the ability to custome log and monitor all 30+ vitamins and minerals for suppliments and herbs but custome doesnot give us the ability to expand to list from what i have been waiting for few years for a PRO version to give PERSONAL TRAINERS and NUTRICIENISTs and extreme users to detail there ingredients so they can be graphed and charted for review....

I use unique email addresses at each site. Here, I used fitday.com@(my domain). And this morning, I got spam with subject line "Hello Valued Customer here is your March 9 Quilting Newsletter" sent to that address.

Vitamins

I am disappointed that multi vitamins are not listed on the food list.

It's hard to add them to the custom food list as the nutritional info on the vitamin bottle is recorded differently than what we are allowed to enter on the FitDay custom food list.:(

Unable to record Vitamin B5 supplement

FitDay's "nutrition" tab was telling me I am deficient in Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), so I decided to supplement with a B-complex containing Pantothenic Acid. I record my vitamin supplements by creating each one as a custom food. Unfortunately FitDay does not allow you to enter a value for Pantothenic Acid (B5). I had to get around this issue by finding a food high in B5, shiitake mushroom, and editing it to be a calorie free food and removing it's other nutrients. I suppose this works OK, but I would really like it if FitDay would make a space on the nutrition label to enter in a %RDA for Pantothenic acid.

Yup, I think we all agree. We're hoping there will be an easy way to add them soon.
