Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred
Just started doing the 30 Day Shred yesterday. It's tough, but I didn't find Level 1 to be real tough, I think I might try Level 2 today to see if that would be a better start for me. Has anyone tried this? Does it work if you are consistent?
|
Sometimes I do 30 DS if I can't make the gym. I've found that I don't lose a ton of weight on it, but I DO lose inches if I stick with it for more than a few days (which I usually don't :D, haha, she kicks my butt a little too hard right now!)
|
Hi, I did the 30 day shred for just over 20 days. I level 1 and then level 2 for 10 days each and then probably 2-3 days on level 3. I did the workout each day for those 22-23 days until the discomfort in my knees would not allow me to do more. So I would advise not doing it for 30 consecutive days. I think it was a good workout but can't say I lost any weight and my clothes still fit the same. Such a bummer with all the other positive results I read about before trying it out myself. I can say that my stamina certainly increased but I was really hoping for inches lost. Everyone's different so give it a try - just not consecutive days as mentioned above.
|
I've been using the Jillian 30 day shred about 2-3 days a week for a couple weeks and it seems to be working I've been consistently losing 1-2 lbs a week. I also use Denise Austin dvds (shes one of my favorites). If you want a really good workout the Denise Austin Blast away 10 pounds dvd is really good and also a 20 minute workout but its a bit more challenging. Good luck!

Hello I just joined this site today..pretty cool, I was actually looking for people who have started Jillian Michaels 30 day Shred and here I am! lol I Just started the Shred and this is day 4 Im finally not sore! the last few days were tough but I stuck to it! Im hoping to lose the 20 in the 30 days I hope it's possible. Looking forward to hearing everyone's experience with the shred :)

Hi Christie, welcome to FitDay. I've done the Shred in the past and it is great for toning up and you see results fairly quickly if you pair it with eating sensibly. However, I think the claim of 20 pounds in 30 days is stretching it a bit. Losing and keeping it off is a process that can't be hurried along (unfortunately). The rate at which you lose depends on your height, starting weight and age (basically factors in how many calories you're burning). Generally, 1-2 pounds per week is considered a safe and maintainable rate of loss, though if you're just starting out you might get a big drop of (mostly water) weight in the early weeks.
Stick with it and good luck! It is possible to lose the weight, and there's never a better time to start than now :) |
I just started it today and it was so much harder than I expected. I'm not going to do it every day, I'm alternating with running.
|
So I posted above saying how I did not lose any weight or inches but my stamina increased. I would like to add a little something more. I use to jog when I was younger but just didn't think I could manage it again. The shred taught me to challenge myself. On Monday I decided to break out of my comfort zone of walking on the treadmill and try a walk/jog combination. Guess what?!?! I could not only jog but go for much longer intervals than I thought. :D

Jillian Michaels 30 Day shred WORKS!!! Keep at it!
Hi all,
I'm new here, and just saw that some folks here are doing Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred. I want to tell you - IT WORKS but only if you stick with it (and stick with it far, far past 30 days!).... Think about it - if you only do it for 30 days, then what? Make it a daily habit and you will truly see results and feel stronger. I am in my mid-30s and have a 2 year old and a 1-year old. About 4 months after having my son, I wanted to lose the baby weight. I was carrying an additional 5 lbs and weighed in at 125 lbs; I just wanted to lose the 5 lbs and tone up. I ended up losing 18 lbs after doing the Shred for 229 days (and counting). My stats: July 2010 started working out Weight: 125 lbs height: 5 foot 5 inches Goal weight: 120 lbs Current stats at April 2011 after working out for 229 (nearly consecutive) days: Weight: 107 lbs Goal weight - I don't want to lose any more weight, I just want to keep building muscle! After being pregnant or post-partum for 3 years, I have needed to re-learn how to eat healthy and how to take care of my body again. With limited time caring for two babies, I have been able to carve out 30 minutes to work out before my kids get up each morning. On my "rest" day I usually do a yoga class. I'm a habit person and I feel less energized if I don't work out. Keep at your daily workouts, folks. You can do it!:) |
I like the 30-Day Shred, but if you really want a workout that brings it to a whole new level, get a copy of Bob Harper's inside out method Cardio Rev Up. Now there's a workout to kick your butt.
|
The Shred is what got me started - before thinking about nutrition or anything. What's great about it is the workout, from the level of the interval to the whole concept - 30 mins a day for 30 days - is entirely manageable - small goals are built into it, so that's motivating. It's just so convenient - you can easily fit it into your day. Hooks you into working out & feeling good. You start wanting to eat better.
I absolutely did see results - 9 lbs of loss, and everything tightened up. Will just say that my knees took a hit - I did a bit of research on form and that helped. |
Just curious about the 30DS. How soon did you start seeing results?
I have been doing a Denise Austin DVD and just started in 30DS. I did it yesterday and this morning. I am already careful about what I eat and am currently keeping my carbs low to help weight loss. All you people out there please help - 1. What weights do you use - I am currently using 3lbs for level 1. When shall I move up? 2. Did any one gain weight on this as muscle weighs more? Thanks in advance Current weight- 161 Mini goal- 155 Goal date- 5/31/2011 |
Move up to 5 lbs when 3 is no longer challenging, even just for particular sections. (I found the flies easy, so went up just for that bit for a while). At the same time that you're experimenting with weights, move up a level - you can even swap days/weights.
I can't remember when particular results happened... I know within the first week, I felt stronger. By the second week, I felt tighter and had lost a few pounds. Diet is (as ever) important in seeing results. |
Thanks pinenutcasserole.
I am using 5lbs for the flies. I tried the swats and presses with 5lbs but it was really tough. I'll try it again in a day or 2. I haven't seen any weight loss, in fact i see an increase - don't know if the muscle getting formed can add weight so quickly. I will try not to weigh as much. i do feel stronger, I will focus more on that and start looking for weight loss next week. Do most people move to level 2 in 10 days? |
I think a lot of people chop and change, as suits their feeling. I stuck with Level 1 for a couple of weeks - the transition from being totally sedentary was tough for me. Had to take breaks because of DOMS.
After that, L2 wasn't all *that* bad, and L3 the same - I did L2 for I think a handful of days before trying L3. Keep at it, sounds like you're making great progress! -- re quick weight gain - now this is a pure junk guess, based on vague memories of something or other I might have read / heard / imagined - is it possible there's some kind of extra water/blood going to (and hanging around) the muscle fibres, given those brand new microtears and changed sodium or whatnot levels? edit - lol, we've FINALLY got some sun today, I'm giddy. Sorry! |
I'm on day 8. I've been using 5lb weights for the last 3 days but I don't feel like i'm getting stronger. It seems really hard, sometimes harder than yesterday. Do I have bad posture or should I do it every other day to allow my body to fully recover?
I did see a 0.2lb decrease this morning so that's exciting :) |
I've used this DVD for a good six months or so, on and off. It's a good quick workout for when I don't have a lot of time and also something I can bring with me when I travel for work and do on the road.
I stopped doing it for a while in favour of biking, but had some nerve problems in my hand that made it painful to hold the handlebars, so I went back to the DVD. As much as I like the workout and would happily do it every day, the constant high impact from all the jumping jacks and other bouncy exercises are giving me stress fractures in my shin bones. So I guess I'm back to the bike. But as far as weight loss goes, I don't see a ton of weight loss from it, so much as toning up. I don't care about the numbers on the scale so much as how my clothes fit and I do definitely notice an improvement in my overall shape if I stick with the DVD for even as little as a week. |
Ready to Go
Hi everyone,
I gained 18 pounds and I started to feel really out of shape, so last week was the last of eating junk! I'm working on a diet and I started the Jillian Michaels 30 days shred program which is a pain in the ass, but I hope it works. So I hope to post some progress in here soon... |
I also just started the 30 Days Shred. Today is day 4 and although my muscles are in pain, I will continue to do it everyday. I don't know if it's Jillian or my willpower, but I don't want to skip a day, even though my muscles are crying to me to stop:D
As I said, it's only 4 days, but I feel that the exercise seems easier to me than they 1, which means at least I'm getting stronger. I hope it will help me loose some weight, but most importantly, I want to get back in shape. I hope to manage it soon! |
Good luck to you. It's good that you are starting now. It is soo easy to say "oh it's just 10 lbs" and then before you know it you are 50 or 100 lbs overweight...I should know. You can do it. Good luck.

ironjawedangel, welcome and I suspect you are well on your way to peeling those 18 pounds right off. We look forward to seeing your progress. |
Fresh start? I can only try..
I'm 17 years old, started out at 198.6 pounds, with my goal weight at 120 pounds (been there before, and I can do it again!). I have some horrible eating habits that I've been working on. I track my food and calories daily in a notebook and now on here. I also slack off when it comes to exercise, but I recently bought a Jillian Michaels DVD that I'm going to stick to!
|
Welcome to FitDay! It's so much better to track here than a notebook. How long have you been tracking your food for and what time frame are you giving yourself for your goal?

30 Day Shred?
Has anyone tried Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred? Just wanted to see if there are any success stories out there with her DVD. I've done two days on level one, but I'm not going to start the actual 30 day routine until Monday as my bf and I are doing a water cleanse this weekend. Tell me your thoughts!!
|
I'm on level 1- day 2
I'll weigh and measure in 10 days so I'll see the results. I've already crossed a level 1 a year before and can say that it was visible results. This time I hold to the end! |
Hello All!
i'm starting the 30 day shred today. i'm curious how sore i'll be after the exercise and how soon i should see the results, considering i'm used to exercising. is anyone else doing the work out? |
i'll have to bring this thread back up.
anyone doing 30 day shred and gaining weight? :( i'd love to think that it's all muscles but that would just be to good to be true. i started on sunday with level one and have been doing it everyday except monday when i have zumba course. i definitely did not eat more than before, i was conscious about my food and reduced carbs as i did before to lose weight. i lost 15 lbs this year with low carb alone (166 to 151 lbs) but gained back about four after too many carbs on business trips and birthday parties. now i am back to low carb for a while and started the shred but the weight doesn't go down. so on sunday i started with 156 lbs and i gradually went up to 157.5 lbs today. i do feel an effect. i feel stronger and the exercise is becoming easier, which is cool. :) i don't think i have lost any inches, though. any ideas what i could do? |
A fluctuation of 1.5 pounds is just normal (I can fluctuate 3-4 pounds) depending on water and waste retention. Have you increased your water intake with your increase in exercise. Your body will actually retain water if it thinks it isn't getting enough. Drinking more water will allow your body to not retain as much.
Have you adjusted your eating to your new workouts? If the deficit between what you eat and what you burn is too great then your body may slow your metabolism and make it harder to lose. I would be inclined to think that your gain is just a normal fluctuation though. |
thank you for your quick reply!
ah, probably it's true and i should not worry so much. And i might also do well to drink more. i exercise pretty late, between about 7 and 8 in the evening, so there is not much time afterwards to rehydrate. maybe i should try and find some nice (cold) alcohol-free beer? ;) (supposedly it's even isotonic.) i think jillian recommends 1300 kcal but to me this sounds too little. i eat about 1500-1700 kcal, i would say. and none of that alcohol or soda or juice. |
You are welcome to join us in the 'Did you exercise today?' thread. A great bunch of people who help encourage, motivate and hold each other accountable.
As far as calories I believe the deficit you achieve is much more important than the amount you eat. If you have set up your profile and log your exercise in the Activities tab Fitday will show you the difference in what you burned and what you ate. If you set up a weight loss goal fitday will calculate the deficit you need to achieve to hit your goal. |
Ah, yesterday I took a break from shredding and was out with friends and even had some regular beer but today is the first day this week that I have not gained weight. :)
Usually I have a calorie deficit of 600 to 1000 kcal if the metabolic rate calculation is right. Other websites calculate roughly the same rate, though. Still, my metabolism might be slower than that since this is a higher deficit than I would need but I am not really losing much weight. I'll definitely join you in the other thread! Thanks for inviting me! |
