Zumba!

Just got back to Zumba class after 6 weeks out. Man, its such fun. If you haven't try it, do. Doesn't feel like exercise, rather, a night out dancing with the girls.:p

AmymayH 01-06-2010 06:27 AM

Love Love Love Zumba. I just started and 5 minutes in I knew I was going to love it. It’s so much fun!

chipmunk1973 01-08-2010 10:59 PM

I think Zumba is the best hour of my week. What activity are you using to add it to your activities page?

jpectol 01-11-2010 11:07 AM

Does anyone know how many calories you burn while doing an hour of Zumba? I just joined a gym that specializes in Zumba, I love it.

Valsparks 01-17-2010 01:45 AM

Zumba calorie burn

The instructor that teaches Zumba at my club says that you burn approx. 500/ 600 calories per hour of Zumba. Obviously, the more motion you put into it the more calories you burn.

gunnabhotgrl 03-22-2010 01:50 AM

Anyone tried Zumba?

Zumba is awesome, it lets you let go have fun and get an awesome calorie crazy workout!!! and learn some latin dancing with a twist. Great way to workout!!!! has anyone else tried it and liked it? I am going to try a new class Zumba Fusion on friday!!!! :D

mandab1 03-22-2010 04:25 AM

I haven't tried Zumba but last night when I couldn't sleep I caught an infomercial. It looks like tons of fun and they said you can burn up to 1,000 calories an hr! Unfortunately I don't think they offer classes in my small town. :(

How long have you been doing it? What kind of results have you seen?

almeeker 03-22-2010 05:06 AM

You might be surprised where they are offering it. I live in a small town and there are 2 separate dance studios that offer it. And the only reason they do is that in the next town over (which is really a village not a town) the local dance studio/tanning parlor/hair salon offers Zumba 4 nights a week! My sister-in-law has been taking it, and she loves it. I've not taken a class yet, but I watched part of her class one night and will be signing up for the next session.

mandab1 03-22-2010 05:32 AM

You are totally right! I just found a class close to my area... it's about a 20 or 30 min drive. I'll have to check into it

Let me know how you like the classes!

KristynBond 03-22-2010 05:49 AM

I LOVE zumba. I've been taking it for the past couple of weeks at the Y. It's tons of fun, and definitely works up a sweat. I look like a complete idiot doing it, but I still enjoy it. :-)

KidStarburst 04-04-2010 11:14 AM

I've wanted to try it they offer it at my gym like twice a week.
Now reading all this praise over it i will give it a shot.

Zumba

I am sure that people have talked about this before in this site, but since I am new to both FitDay and Zumba today I thought that it would would be worth posting.

Today I took my very first Zumba classed and LOVED IT!!!!!!!! I am one of those people that really dislike exercising. Once I get started I do okay, and love the way I feel when I am done the exercise. Today that was changed after taking my first Zumba class... I have two left feet I swear, but that didn't matter, as long as I keep my hips shaking and my feet moving:) I don't think that I have ever sweat like that during exercise... I just want to let people know that Zumba is a must try for everyone:):):)

hiddenhope 04-14-2010 11:17 AM

they offer zumba at a gym near me and after looking at it , it is exactly the same dance aerobic classes they did in the 80s lol but they just renamed it. if you go to youtube you can find alot of zumba videos to follow along at home too if you cant make it to your gym. i do them at night (with two left feet also lol) they are alot of fun and a great workout but dont feel like excercise like sitting 45-60 mins on a machine will.

kevin.gootee 08-31-2010 07:18 AM

Why no entry of exercises like they do for creating new foods? It would be nice to enter Zumba and to be able to list chest, legs, and back body building days; rather than just weight training and dance.

MusicNLyricz 09-14-2010 12:30 AM

Zumbas amazing. My only downfall is that I live at home with my parents and the only room with enough room to get into it is kinda small. We make it work usually though.

[email protected] 11-16-2010 12:43 AM

Does anyone know a good Zumba DVD?

laine99 11-16-2010 08:18 AM

I took a kick boxing class last night. It was a crazy good workout. I am just now getting back into a regular exercise routine and I am soooo sore. I am trying Zumba thursday!

yunalee 03-15-2011 04:52 AM

Zumba!

i was looking into Zumba. has anyone done it? and does it really help you loose weight?

also is there a way to do it at home?

behaze 03-16-2011 02:22 PM

I have the original Zumba DVDs. You don't need a lot of room to do it, so you can definitely do it at home if you have a little strip of space in front of your lounge. It's a good workout. If you can figure out a way to get it from your computer to your tv (or just do it in front of your computer), youtube has about five-hundred-and-fifty-gazillion zumba dances you can follow along with.

As for helping lose weight, it helped me (but I was doing a bunch of other stuff). It certainly didn't hurt! Also, depending on your weight/age and all that jazz, you can burn about 600-700 calories an hour if you're putting everything you've got into it.

:D

yunalee 03-16-2011 02:29 PM

how much would a dvd cost?

i have the space for it snice i'm able to fully lay out a yoga mat

behaze 03-20-2011 04:14 PM

I got my set from ebay (4 DVDs Beginner - (15 mins - teaches you the moves), Advanced (roughly 45 mins, 7 'dances'), Power (roughly 50 mins, Zumba plus aerobics) and Abs, Hips and Thighs (just over 30 mins, a bunch of individual exercises, not dancing) about 2 years ago and paid $AU30 for the set. I should imagine you'd now be able to pick them up more cheaply - plus, there are many more Zumba instructors with their own DVDs now. My set has the original guy, who speaks Spanish, and a Brazilian who translates into English.

Meggietye 03-21-2011 03:31 AM

I have the same original set and it is a fabulous for losing weight!!

kag123 03-22-2011 12:09 PM

I just got the same set last week and am having a blast it is a totally fun workout and I can tell I am loosing inches already...Would recommend to anyone. I am addicted, I originally tried it at Curves and really enjoyed it but their hours for the classes just were not working for me. Enjoy

Zumba_queen 03-30-2011 03:19 PM

zumba

I just got the Zumba fitness game for the ps3...they also have it for the wii and the 360 kinect... I love it the dance moves are very similar to the actual classes but i can enjoy my work outs any day of the week at home...its very fun but the steps do take alot of work to learn and get with the rythum but as soon as you get started and have fun it feels like the 20 minutes is over in no time...great cardio....just started this about 2 days ago but i have a really good feeling about it ...

kag123 04-07-2011 10:47 AM

I have done the class and I am not coordinated :rolleyes:but they are really fun. Remember you won't be the only one there just starting out. I would recommend going to them, the only reason I bought the DVD's instead is because of the timing of the classes. I live in the country and it was an "extra" trip in. So now I can do it on my schedule. I think Zumba helps with self confidence after you have done it for awhile. Give it a shot!! :)

Crimpet 04-07-2011 11:02 AM

How would Zumbas activity be listed under the fitness section? There's several options to choose from under dance. I know it's aerobic, but which one? aerobics (aerobic dacing) general, aerobics (aerobic dacing) step, with 6-8 inch step, aerobics (aerobic dacing) step, with 10-12 inch step, aerobics (aerobic dacing) low impact, or aerobics (aerobic dacing) high impact?

I assumed it was aerobic step with 10-12 in step, but I know it can vary. Any ideas what to record it under? Thanks!

kag123 04-08-2011 05:34 AM

Personally I put areobic dancing high impact

yunalee 04-10-2011 09:24 AM

i got the zumba fitness game wii version. i tried it out with just some single trys, and man i build up a sweat. i also suck and should of gone through training all the moves first. i hope this game will help get me out of my rut

jnjd09 04-15-2011 04:20 AM

I've been going to Zumba for almost 12 weeks now (2 days a week when I can that is). We have people of all ages, shapes, coordination levels. You names it, they come to the class. We have a blast. But since starting Zumba, watching what I eat, uping my water intake; I've lost 15 lbs. I've also started working out on the elliptical 2 days a week and trying to do about 3-4 miles as well. But, in those 12 weeks, 15 lbs. I love Zumba. I feel great when I am done and I feel like I get a great work out. And I see the results!! I've recently added light weights to the Zumba as well. I have 2 lb hand weights (each 1 weights 2 lbs) and 2.5 lbs ankle weights (again each is 2.5 lbs). I got them at WalMart. I've notice that I sweat alot more and I feel like I am working harder, but I am toning my muscles. Just some ideas.:)

Zumba and slimming down

Hi! I am new here but thought that this would be the place to get some answers. I have been doing Zumba and riding a stationary bike for the past 10 days and have noticed a difference in my upper and lower abs. But I am wondering if this is gonna just build muscle in my legs or will it help slim them down. I am already pretty "solid" and don't need more bulk in my legs. Thanks!

goldyray1 05-13-2011 06:43 PM

Zumba

I just started Zumba! I purchased the beginners dvd and I have been doing it for six weeks. Wonderful results!!! I have lost about 12 pounds in six weeks. I am also 57 years old. I have a sit down job all day. Used to be a heavy smoker. I have no trouble doing the dancing. Sometimes on certain steps I have a little trouble keeping up. I am sure that soon, even the harder steps will become easy! Every day it becomes easier. I do this at home. Hoping to get some of my friends to come and do it with me. I live in a college town and the Zumba classes here are filled with these college girls that are in perfect shape and condition! Until I lose more weight, I am happy to do it at home. I feel like I would be too self concious to do some of those Zumba moves in the middle of those 19 year olds!!! I doubt that I could keep up. But give me a couple of months and those 19 year olds can move over and let me in!!!!! By the way, I have 40 pounds more to lose. I am 5'3" and at the moment, I weigh 158-160 pounds. I would love to get down to 120-125 pounds.

kcolville 05-14-2011 12:41 AM

WOOO HOOO! Goldray, you will be in that zumbda class showing them who is boss in no time :)

Ps. keep it up.

kag123 05-14-2011 04:02 AM

Good for you! It is so fun...been doing it also at home for abut eight weeks. just got the cardio party set also a kick butt dvd:D

AquariusB 05-16-2011 06:41 PM

Zumba is such an awesome work-out! I have it on DVD and I attend the classes twice a week. It sure does beat running for 30 minutes! Glad to see you are enjoying it so much!:D

AquariusB 05-16-2011 06:43 PM

Hi! Zumba is mainly "cardio", so you will definately lose weight!:D

pixiedust7976 10-18-2011 09:54 PM

Does Zumba really work?

The other day I was out running, and after I got into the 4 mile mark, my knee started giving me these weird tingling sensations up and down my leg. I looked it up, and it seems like I have ITB Syndrome and I need to give my knee some healing time before I go out and run again. It's weird that my knee is now doing this when I am literally 5 pounds away from goal. You would think it would do it when I started running when I was in the 150's. So my question is, does Zumba work for cardio while my knee has time to heal. Will it give me the same benefits as running everyday for 5 miles?

Hmmmm....

almeeker 10-18-2011 11:06 PM

It probably burns fewer calories, and I'm not sure it's a "rest" for your knees, although it's certainly less impact than running. You might consider something where you get your heart rate up but are not bearing your full body weight on the knees, like a stationary bike or a rowing machine. My knees are both really bad, and when they act up I usually hit the stationary bike, or the elliptical and I switch from cardio to strengthening. Yoga is good too.

kag123 10-19-2011 01:37 PM

It does really work however I agree that not sure if it is easy on the knees. I have been doing it for a while with a lot of success and it is fun, I look forward to doing it. I do modify some of the moves so my knees don't hurt. U could give it a shot with modifications, not going to burn the calories that running does but you can still work up a sweat and its good cardio. It really helps the core...good luck:)

handcycle2005 10-19-2011 03:11 PM

Not so weird it's cropping up now. Iliotibial Band Syndrome is primarily an overuse injury.

Some stretches and you should start working your hip abductors.

If you have access to a pool, you could try Deep Water Running. Very intense workout.

taubele 10-21-2011 03:32 AM

I agree on the Deep Water Running if you have an access to a pool - I used to do that a long time ago and WOW, you could really feel it.

I have been doing Zumba at home for a couple months now. On my cardio days, I usually burn between 600-700 calories in 45 minutes, and on the Sculpt and Tone days, it's usually 500-550-ish in 45 minutes. Your mileage may vary, however. I have issues with low blood pressure, and it seems like I tend to burn more calories than your average bear when my heart rate gets high. I use a heart rate monitor to calculate this calorie burn.

I've found that since I started doing Zumba I am noticing the most change in my core (waist and hips) and my thighs. There's a lot of butt-shaking and hip-wiggling involved. I don't know if it's a "rest" for your knees, however. A lot of the moves have you on one leg, and there's a lot of jumping around on the cardio workouts. Might not be as bad as running, but I would do some strengthening before attempting it. I have a bad ankle and need to modify some of the moves so I don't hurt it :)
