Nope. My ex's shouldn't be anywhere near the race since they don't like running.

Hi Donna,
Here you are: Death Valley Borax Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K

I have run the half twice. It is a small race, but lots of great people. It is kind of a cross between a trail and road run. The surface is black top, but the scenery is wide open spaces, not very many spectators and in Feb the temps should be wonderful.

Looking for running advice... I am currently running 11 minutes and will increase a minute more every week.

Right now i run it in three stages, first run about 5 minutes then a minute or two walk, then run another 3 or 4 minutes and a shorter walk and then run the final stage.

Wondering what is better, should i be trying to eliminate the walks and run 11 minutes straight or to keep adding overall time and not worry about the walks in between.

Any insight is greatly appreciated, have a great running weekend everyone

Hi Wayne, good progress.

Others may disagree, but I would continue with the talk breaks until you get up to about 30 minutes. However, I suspect that at some point prior to that you may just not feel the need for them. So my advice is to let you body tell you when you can start eliminating them, but don't be surprised that as you get stronger there may still be days when you will want to walk.

BTW, I use walk breaks on a lot of my long runs. It allows me to go a bit further and push the endurance envelope.

Hey Wayne, I'm doing the same as you are. I've been easing into running by jogging and taking a walk break when needed. Needed comes when I just get a bit too winded in my breathing and slowing down just isn't enough to feel like I can catch it. The good news is, it doesn't really matter. The main thing is you're burning calories, so don't sweat the details about when you take a break and walk for a bit. Like Pam said, listen to your body. Within weeks you'll see that you are progressing no matter what your walking breaks have been. And you'll be lighter as well. So by default, you WILL be able to run longer distances without stopping as often.

Default My update

Well, I'm now not bike riding that much. It got to the point that I'd ride for 2 hours and didn't really feel like I got that much of a workout.

Lately I've really been enjoying running. When I first started, I would walk/jog for about 2 miles. This is when I was still at a weight of 170+. Eventually I got to a little over 4 miles of walk/jogging and logged my first 4+ miler at 1:07. Not great at all, but at least I was burning calories.

Now I'm getting to the point where I'm walking very little, and jogging most of the 4+ miles (it's very slightly over 4 according to the trail markers, perhaps 4.1 or 4.2 total). I'm coming in at just over 46 minutes. I'm fairly happy about the new times, especially since I still don't have my running legs. But I'm getting there.

My goal is to be able to do the entire 4+ miles without stopping by sometime this winter and then to keep decreasing my total time. I'm loving the new Brooks Adrenaline 11's.
