I've found that I actually love the treadmill at the gym when I put it on a slight incline, like 2-3%. It helps my knees a lot and doesn't hurt when I run, I literally figured this out yesterday. Rowing machines are great as well, I enjoy running on the treadmill and also using the rower on my cardio days as well.

I was also thinking about buying a rowing machine for cardio workouts, because treadmills and exercise bikes seem to be really expensive.
